With a telephoto lens it's easy to lose perspective.......From Juan's pictures and earlier drone footage I'm guessing most of the debris that washed down come from the canyon to the side of the spillway.......The shotcrete that is still there on the left that Juan circled helped to stabilize the face. That face is clay and will erode quickly. The water flowing over the edge is actually not dropping on to that shotcrete, that's what the 40,000 CFS was all about. Where it did drop onto the shotcrete it was eroded in a hurry. Excellent guess as to how much to let flow.....http ( colon slash slash ) cdec (dot) water (dot) ca (dot) gov (dot) (slash) cgi-progs/query F?ORO ...You'll have to reformat it to see the site. It shows the water levels and flow rates. Juan shows it some times........STUPID FORMATTING

I dont live in Cal but even i appreciate your accurate relaying of the information of what is going on in such a critical situation. Facts can calm fears. Thank you for that. You seem to be the only one that want to get solid and as accurate as possible information to the people living in the area and especially down stream. It kind of pissed me off a little to see other presenting your information and presentations as if they were their own. The people there should be grateful that you have applied your talent and attention to detail to this situation. Thank you for taking the time and the energy to do this. I am sure that you are greatly appreciated by your neighbors and friends.

(Regarding DWR) "We ain't got time to wait for them; we're getting our own pictures". You certainly DID! These crisp close-up photos are very revealing and informative in showing the extent of the damage, with those at 1:57, 1:59, & 2:04 catching my attention in particular. I also appreciated those of the workers and equipment. The butterfly on the wildflower at the beginning was a nice touch and the color in the other wildflowers was "a place for the eyes to rest" as we say in quilting, and the beauty we need in the midst of this disaster. Thank you.

Thanks Juan. After that last release I was very surprised at the amount of debris which again almost blocked the diversion pool. The pool became very choked and shallow with rapids/turbulence showing how shallow it was at it's narrowest point. Your videos show the almost daily changes in the landscape situation so please keep them coming they are valued. Best regards.
@JasmineLindros7 жыл бұрын
The terracing you described, between the spillway and the dam, is not to reduce erosion as the water will not get that high. Rather, the terracing is to reduce the load on rock which IS exposed to erosion, and thereby reduce the possibility of a landslide if that heavily loaded rock gave way. A landslide would have no effect on the dam or the spillway, but a large amount of debris dumped into the channel below the power plant would necessitate a VERY fast shutdown of the power plant as well as cost a lot more money to remove from the channel than it's costing now to remove from dry land. As for your kite video, three words: Old City Kites. Deltas are fun.
@longlat397 жыл бұрын
Thanks Juan. I had not seen any footage upstream from the spillway since the latest release, and was concerned about that hillside. It looks like they're starting to bench it down, which makes me feel better. Great reporting, but that's to be expected from a fellow former USAF!

Right on, Juan. As a 45 year crazy skier of the pow, (and former pro ski photographer) we call ours Cascade Concrete....and yours Sierra Cement...fwiw... Great pics.... Confirming what I thought, that only about 20% or less of the shotcrete washed away. Also glad to hear you address the Sac Bee article, which really got a lot of folks worked up. I didn't much like it, and also thought it was overblown. You also stated exactly what I've been posting on other of these boards, that big spring storms are extremely remote. That said, the only time I skied Mammoth, it was the first week of April and we were treated to two storms, totalling over 4 feet of real fluff!
