Maybe it's the house that's poisoning them. Scheele's green wallpaper is popular at the time and is one of the most prevalent causes for arsenic poisoning. If that is the decor in Ambrose's, and latter, Philip's room, it would explain the sickness.

@@neuswabian9442 The fact that he's still sick years later makes it unlikely to have been the tea. @@FunSizeSpamberguesa despite having a short half life, arsenic poisoning, especially frequent and acute one can easily cause eg permanent nerve damage, hallucinations, disorientation etc He got worse and moribund immediately after taking those "teas" that were only for him and forbidden to others. Similarly to Ambrose. Arsenic concoctions were used to treat syphilis(and unsuccefully, leprosy, irc), but even a controlled treatment literally could have killed you or left mutilated. It is highly toxic after all. Could be also a lead poisoning (and we know it causes nerve dmg as well), other heavy metal poisoning. Or anything herbal - as there are a multitude of known poisons there. Perhaps imported and purchased through Italy frequently. For me it is crystal clear she was a black widow - given her literal gold digging and a swath of dead men left in her wake. That people find some ridiculous copes like the room (somehow he was not wasting away and got better after stopping teas and after Rachel killed herself)

How is it her fault he was raised without women? And the movie never gave an answer as to whether she was evil or not, the man, however, certainly took another human's life. Other people are not responsible for someone's abusive and murderous tendencies (we don't know if she was actually poisoning the men, or if they suffered from a hereditary paranoid mental illness). The only thing we know for certain is that both of the men were violent towards her and one ended up killing her, that's not her fault.

Brilliant writing and adds a bit more detail to My Cousin Rachel. Read a couple of comments in this thread that conclude Louise is the culprit. Why? The childhood friend, Louise, prevents any further crime from happening. Putting the pieces together you can conclude that Rachel was receiving her poison supplies from her gay accomplice - probably arsenic. When told not to drink the tea prepared for Philip, you can conclude something is afoot. The hallucinations start after Rachel arrives and hands out poisoned tea like it’s the next best thing. Though not observed directly, Rachel is a widow for the second time when arriving and expecting an inheritance. Instead, she discovers a simp that falls madly in love. This gold digger knew how to manipulate his fragile, little mind to the extent she avoided marrying the fool. Luckily for Philip, his revenge was best served with a cliff. After marrying his childhood sweetheart and raising two kids, the guilt and poison still haunt him with no remorse.

I've read a lot of interesting comment and this is my review of the movie. Rachel most definitely didn't return Phillip's feelings. and my unpopular belief is that I am uncertain if she really did try to kill him or Ambrose. It is possible Ambrose could have had a brain tumor (not uncommon) and the similarities between Phillip's sickness coincidence especially since his health drastically improved after her care. I believe however, that Rachel is manipulator who lead on Phillip ie manipulated him into falling for her or at the very least took advantage of him by leading him on. Her multiple kisses on the lips and further sleeping with him especially when she knew he had no experience with women was not a 'Thank you' in my my opinion. My conclusion of her is either 1) A narcissist/psychopath 2) A naïve woman caught in a bunch of negative circumstantial situation 3) A product of her environment where woman have to be a bit cunning to keep their fortune in a world dominated by men. Either way, the Author did a great job of leaving an ambiguous ending.

All I know is she would do 100% sussy things, give no explanation and then cry whenever he got angry about being lead around, so I think she 100% was manipulating things. It seems like a simple scam, she marries a rich man, gets herself in to the will, then poisons the husbands and her sus behaviour makes him act and look erratic in front of everyone, then Enrico says "He should come to Italy so the weather can help with his health" she then takes them to Italy where Enrico kills them. Enrico being gay may mean that his lover is an Italian Doctor, as only men could be doctors back in that time period. The Dr. falsifies the Brain tumours on the certificate to cover their tracks

You have a good theory, but I'm certain she was poisoning him. He started to get sick just when he started to drink Rachel's tea and gotten better after stopping it. Ambrose wrote about the exact same thing under the exact same circumstances. Being poisoned like that leaves long lasting effects, that is why he still has headaches years later. I don't think there is any other good explanation for his illness. I think getting very sick very fast and then getting singificantly better also very fast couldn't be explained by any illness.

I too think she's guilty, certainly with her first husband Sangaletti and most likely also with Ambrose (though she did seem to have had some compunction already then, because she still seems to love Ambrose, and her last words are to him), and most likely she tried to do it to Philip too but did get cold feet. This is suggested to be likely, but never confirmed either by the book or the film. All the more so because Philip, in the end, develops the same symptoms his cousin had within the relationship with the woman that he has married, and whom he initially trusted so much and, in my opinion, was also justified in trusting. This suggests that both Philip and Ambrose probably fell victim to some mental health issue that runs hereditary in the family. But this is not unequivocally confirmed either, just suggested. So it's really 50:50 for one or the other possibility as far as I am concerned - and that's the beauty of the story. It draws you attention precisely because of that.

The movie ought to be renamed: black widow - an almost serial killer’s story. The movie sprinkles small details that you can follow and conclude knowing Rachel is the killer. As poison supplies dwindle, Enrico arrives to continue the arsenic laced drinks remedy. Thankfully Philip’s childhood sweetheart Louise halts any furtherance of the crime.
@osagioduwafaith

If both Phillip and Ambrose fell victim of some metal issues that runs hereditary in the family, it's safe to assume that Phillip should have shown symptoms of said issue/illness around the same age or a close age range as when Ambrose started exhibiting said issue Secondly, I'll dispute the whole mental issue theory with the fact that Phillip actually got better when she was no more. So I think it's clear she's guilty
@christianealshut1123
@christianealshut1123 Жыл бұрын
@@osagioduwafaith He is showing those symptoms towards the end when he's married to the good girl - everything seems to be roses on the outside but in the final scenes he clearly shows signs of paranoia, of distrusting her, the same way he distrusted Rachel. And the fact that he was raised in a womanless environment does not help, as it feeds his paranoia in a certain direction. So no, Philip did seem to get better after Rachel's death, but it was temporarily, and at the end he may indeed be about the same age that Ambrose was when he died. (But then who knows, the good girl might really have saved him from Rachel because SHE wanted to lay her pretty little fingers on his money.) But there being a strain of mental illness within the Ashley family and Rachel being a killer is not mutually exclusive - and that's the beauty and genius of the story. There are gints to support both views. Rachel actually saves Philip's life at one point when he comes down with meningitis, which at this time is little understood in England, but she brings in some knowledge from the Continent and tells the doctors what to do. If she had wanted him dead, she could simply have let him die and all her problems would have been solved.

There's a few things to consider when coming to a conclusion here. First, I can't say it was a hereditary brain tumor disease or environmental factors. Let's not forget that he lived on, married, had children, and was relatively healthy except for the headaches(a long term side effect from poisoning perhaps). If a disease, it would've gone the same for him and I have yet to find any hereditary brain tumor or disease that kills men in a sudden manner. As for the paint theory and all, such things take time. There would be more symptoms that lasted over time, and there is no known herb that I can think of that would exacerbate these things. Plus, more people in the household would be experiencing the same as him. His condition would get worse, not improve. It's incredibly unlikely that she shows up and two men suffer the same symptoms, both drinking a tea only she makes and does not drink herself. For a clue, I wonder if it was belladonna poisoning(deadly nightshade) because of not only the symptoms, including the hallucinations, but also her time in Italy. The word 'belladonna' is Italian for beautiful woman, and might just be a hint. It does grow in the UK, and could explain some of her secretive rides outside. Also, her friend from Italy could be supplying her with more. She said he was there to give her advice. Perhaps he was the one making the tea in Italy, and was now advising her on the proper dosage. The letter at the end could be advising her to take him to Italy where they could more easily dispose of him(because they have proven they are not stupid enough to write down their crimes in easily found letters, he says it's for his health). Now, the symptoms line up and it has been known to have lasting effects on the brain, possibly organs like the heart/blood pressure, explaining the headaches. But, since he is not sickly like he was, I can safely assume he is not being exposed to what caused him to get sick initially- and therefore the belladonna theory seems plausible. Only option is poisoning. And that poisoning is no longer being presented to him, making him ill. Conclusion: She was a gold digging psycho/sociopath, and would've likely gone on to murder more people after her funds ran out.

My guess for what happened, is that Rachel is a sort of assassin that is meant to drain an unlucky rich family member with the help of Enrico. Rachel herself must have been growing tired and guilty after meeting Phillip, especially since Ambrose did not write her into the will and Phillip was pretty young & desperate compared to her. In the end, she even considered staying longer because of her guilt and even would give him back the jewels after she passed. In the contact Phillip wrote that she had to stay unmarried to keep the money, and I think she continued to poison him until she can disappear.

Orphaned young, Philip was raised as if his son by childless uncle Ambrose Ashly, who never brought women into their lives, until he was sent for medical reasons to a Mediterranean climate, fell in love with half-Italian cousin Rachel and wed her in Florence. Philip receives a worrying letter suggesting Ambrose is in mortal danger, blaming his wife and her 'diabolic' lawyer friend Rainaldi. Ambrose is dead by the time Philip arrives there, but remained the sole heir as a testament in her sole favour wasn't passed before the notary. He prepares the widow an icy welcome but falls instantly in love the day she arrives on the large Ashley estate. Against his godfather, attorney Nick Kendall, also father of his only, now practically ignored female friend Louise, besotted Philip resolves to claim from the estate he's about to inherit reaching majority to give to Rachel, who becomes his lover. Trusting blindly in love, he prepares a document transferring Ambrose's entire estate to her unless she remarries, but the result is chillingly disappointing, like emerging evidence that Ambrose suspected her of poisoning him.

"My Cousin Rachel" was written by Daphne du Maurier who probably wanted the story's ending to remain unclear. My guess is that Rachel was a manipulator in terms of money but was not trying to kill Philip. The ending is similar to the finale of "Body Heat" where William Hurt's character ambiguously sends Kathleen Turner's character seemingly to her death in the boathouse that explodes. In both stories, the male characters are so upset at being deceived that they want to exact revenge on their lovers. Personally, I think that Philip was suffering from a brain tumor that made him paranoic. In the book, the point is that Rachel serves Philip a tisane, which is an herbal concoction that does not contain tea. Possibly both Ambrose and Philip had a hereditary disease that Rachel was treating with an herbal infusion. That would explain the similarity of the symptoms. Unwittingly, the tisane that Rachel thought would be helpful may have actually exacerbated the men's underlying health condition. There was no need for Philip to send her on the dangerous pathway. He could have stalled for time until he cleared matters up. In this version and the 1952 version Philip is portrayed as a good-looking young man. It would have been easy to see an attraction developing between Philip and Rachel.

If only Philip could see why his uncle doubted her in the first place. And him being started doubting her, it would piece things together. *plot twist* Philip's wife was the one who instigated all events to transpire. In thr end, she gets the last laugh.

gilty as the devil. at the very least, she's manipulative and we know that Ambrose died in "interesting" circumstances and that she was giving the main chraracter a tea that was made for him specifically. this last clues to poisoning. the fact that the main characted began to show similar health issues than the first after he began drinking that special tea also supports the poisoning idea.
