This little guy has made a backyard his home for the past 3 days. Now named Dilly, his mother is no where to be seen. Dilly is usually left to himself so that he doesn't become too dependent, but user 'TYarber37' makes sure he always has plenty of water and leads him to bugs. He looks for her now when he hears her voice.

if you ever run into this type of situation again remember this... if the mother doesn't return with 2 hrs of you coming across a baby this young and helpless, the few hours after that will be crucial to his survival. mothers milk supplement every 2 hours is vital for the first few days. waiting too long to food sup the animal can and probably will lead to its demise. a good tried and true recipe i use is 1 -12 oz. can evaporated milk, 8 OZ. PURIFIED WATER OR SPRING WATER, 1-8 oz. plain yogurt and 2 egg YOLKS. mix until smooth and feed as needed.

Problem with that is, we're not even sure how long the mother has already been gone, it could have already been 2+ hours.. but you also don't want to take a baby away from its mother.. so it's a tough call...

@@Frosty_tha_Snowman , picture yourself as a starving, dying child in need, abandoned by your mother. Dumbass If you find a baby armadillo, the best thing you can do for it is to leave it alone. Odds are that most of the time the armadillo's mother is nearby, and she will take care of the baby herself. If you know for sure that the mother is not there to help - that is, in cases where the mother has been killed by a car, etc.

I'm sorry to hear that this armadillo passed away. By the way that it was stumbling and unsteady, it looks like it had some neurological difficulties, which may have lead the mother to abandon it. Nature is rough, and the woman here did what she could to help this little guy, even if she didn't quite know what all should have been done. It seems like the little fella would not have survived long either way due to his unfortunate condition, but at least she tried. Jeezus, take the poor baby to a vet to hydrate and nourish and get medical attention so it can thrive. The stumbling and lethargy is due to low blood sugar and dehydration. Abandoned baby animals need to be immediately rehydrated before ANY food is offered. Proper digestion and absorption of nutrients will not occur without it. Slightly warmed Pedialyte, administered in a 1cc syringe very slowly, about a drop or two at a time, as small mammals can aspirate fluids easily leading to pneumonia or literally drowning. Also, babies cannot regulate their own body temperature and Armadillos have slower metabolism, cold will lead to organ failure & death much more quickly. Use either a sock filled with rice, a heating pad set on warm, or even your own body heat, but not directly against skin. Baby must warmed before feeding as well. Rehydrate as above several times and wait about 7 hours before feeding. In this case, Benilac kitten formula with a pinch of ProBios powder will do for beginning. Afterwards you MUST stimulate defecation and urinating with cotton ball wet w/ warm water

If he's "orphaned", doesn't he need to be cared for? And I don't mean giving him water and leading him to bugs. (Does he even eat any? He seems awfully young to eat insects.) I don't mean this as a criticism. How would I (or most people) know what a teeny, tiny armadillo needs? But I really, really, REALLY think you should find out - call a wildlife center, a wildlife vet - or a regular one who could direct you. He's just too little to be on his own. He won't make it if you don't do something real for him. That a professional would advise.

Well, I volunteer at a wildlife rehab and goats milk is the safest and best milk for all baby animals who've been orphaned like this. Cows milk is never a good thing for any animal except calves. He wobbles and stumbles like he may have cerebellar hyperplasia. It's a condition that happens in the womb. They aren't in pain, just can't coordinate their movements. With the right rehabber, he can live a full, happy life. (He won't make it in the wild)

So sorry he didn't survive. Poor little guy needed his mother, nature is just cruel like that sometimes... RIP little Dilly :( I tried saving a brown Rat with a broken leg once. Saw him limping across the road one day when I was driving home with my friend and my brother. He was so scared he cuddled right up to me after I stopped the car. The wildlife rehab center was closed, so we put him in a cat kennel with some seeds and water and I decided I'd take him in the morning. But when I woke up, he'd passed away. Most likely from shock. It's hard when you try to make a difference for an animal and they don't pull through. But at least you tried.

It hadn't rained. The kids were playing in the water hose that afternoon, and it was left trickling, flooding the cement slab. I believe the water was what attracted him in the first place. I DID leave him outside because I wanted his mother to find him, and also because he was obviously ill... I was reluctant to take him into a home with small children. Once I was certain his mother wasn't going to return, I began feeding him milk through a syringe. He fought me the best that he could, but I managed to get a few milliliters of kitten replacement milk in him every few hours. I fought nature, and I lost.

Hi Tammy Grimes Yarber, I'd like to share my own story of me saving an animal. Years ago, an ally cat and her three kittens would hang around my back pourch and I would leave them food and water. After a few days of observing them through my kitchen window, I noticed that two of her kittens were nice and plump and the other one was thin and scrawny. I actually saw the mother cat swipe and hiss at the malnourished kitten and the kitten recoiled and cowered in the corner. The mother began descending the stairs and I immediately went out and picked up the kitten. I still remember to this day, the look he gave me, not one of fear but one of guarded curiosity. I kept him in a shoebox lined with towels and left a bowl of water and moistened catfood in it. He stayed in there for about two weeks. Every day I would interact with him, but he was so nervous and timid. I gave him a bath and cleaned his ears with q-tips and eventually he started coming out of the shoebox and exploring his surroundings and started to put on weight. After a few months he grew into one of the strongest cats I've ever picked up, his muscle mass was fantastic...I'm sure all the baked potato skins that he loved to eat helped with that. I'm proud to say that I helped raise him into a strong healthy cat, who now has a home with an elderly woman that I knew in the neighborhood. I do know that a cruel part of mother nature is that, a mother will sometimes reject one of their offspring for whatever reason, in this case him probably being the runt of the litter. Who knows, maybe he would have been just fine without my intervention, but in my heart, I know I did the right thing. When I read your post about you and your dad growing up on the farm, I really identified with that level of compassion for animals.

His carapace is still soft, so he probably isn't more than a few days old, and still nursing, so yes, you need an expert to take over. Armadillos can be a reservoir for leprosy, but can also carry Chagas disease, which is much worse because it frequently isn't diagnosed until years later when it starts to kill you. GLOVES!
@Silkendrum
@Silkendrum 9 жыл бұрын
***** Yes, but Chagas (a parasitic disease) can really mess you up before it is eventually diagnosed. They can halt it, but may not be able to reverse the damage already done. And even though leprosy is curable --- would you really want to get it? (Coincidentally, I just finished reading the book about the history of the leper colony in Hawaii. Good read.)
@Silkendrum
@Silkendrum 9 жыл бұрын
+Marcin Wasilewski Even though leprosy is curable, if you start showing symptoms (any of a variety), given that most American doctors have probably never seen it and are unlikely to think of it, it might take a while to be diagnosed, so you could be left with some residual nerve damage that cannot be cured.

+Marcin Wasilewski Monsters Inside Me recently had a story about one person who contracted leprosy. His dog had chased down and killed an armadillo. The man went up to it and nudged at it a little, and blood got onto his shoe. He reached down and rubbed it off, catching the deadly disease. In the time it took for doctor's to officially diagnose him the disease had necrotized a large portion of his skin. So yes, it CAN be cured, but it's so rare these days that most doctors don't immediately think of leprosy when they see symptoms like this

+Silkendrum Oh my god. For years indians lived with armadillos with no problem. You should put your mask and gloves when you go out to the city because people can spread to you all kind of illnesses. Poor of you, you may live in a bubble.
@Silkendrum
@Silkendrum 8 жыл бұрын
+Laura Adriana A little research will show that Florida's leprosy rate, for example, has doubled in 2015 due to more people coming into contact with armadillos. Yes, it is curable, AFTER it has been diagnosed, but it can take 4 to 20 years for the external lesions to appear, during which time diagnoses is unlikely, and during that silent time it wreaks havoc on the nervous system, which cannot be repaired. Yes, native Americans lived alongside the armadillo throughout their history, but 1.) "no problem" is questionable, and 2.) armadillos picked up leprosy from humans, so it's likely that during much of that time, they had not yet been infected.

If you find a baby armadillo, the best thing you can do for it is to leave it alone. Odds are that most of the time the armadillo's mother is nearby, and she will take care of the baby herself. If you know for sure that the mother is not there to help - that is, in cases where the mother has been killed by a car, etc.

Armadillos eat worms, grubs, crickets, mealworms even certain types of fruit and vegetables, and they love the water. Armadillos don't eat ants. You put a soft baby armadillo near an ant bed and you'll most likely kill it. The ants will attack the baby armadillo. You should bring him inside keep him warm and make sure he has plenty of water. Most likely the mother abandoned the baby armadillo because for the size of the armadillo it should be sturdy on its feet not stumbling around falling over. With proper care he'll be fine. Looks to me like he's the little runt of the litter he's weak and fragile.

To all of you who commended my effort, gave support, and for the kind words, Thank you. To all my haters, you're wasting your time. I will not feel bad about trying to keep this animal alive, and I will not feel bad that he died. Death is certain, it was his time to go. Whether you feel I aided his death or postponed it, you're entitled to your own opinion. I truly and confidently say I did the best that I could. I have received a lot of positive feedback, and a lot of negative feedback from this video. My hope is that if one day someone else finds themselves in my old shoes, and stumbles across this video while researching how to help a baby armadillo, they read all the helpful tips from the compassionate people on this comment feed.

Tammy Grimes Yarber Hi Tammy Grimes Yarber, I'd like to share my own story of me saving an animal.

JEFF KIPER Thank you Jeff. I loved reading your story. I have a rescue kitty myself. She was living behind the store I worked at. When I found her she weighed less than a pound, you could count every rib. She also had a wound on her head that had a wolf worm living in it. I took her to the vet, nursed her to health, and now she is 7 yrs old, healthy and happy. She is one of many success stories, but from a time when not everything was recorded on video. I tried hard to save this little armadillo. From what I read, I learned they die easily at this age, especially without their mothers. It was an experience, I learned a lot, and I have no regrets. Thank you for the kind words.

You know more than 5 out of 20 people that walk barefoot that live in warm climates have or are carrying leprosy but never were effected because at one point took a antibiotic for another infection that killed it or their own immune system killed it. That even the bacteria of leprosy is not a life threatening disease the threat was caused by secondhand infections because of the occupation of that bacteria, that most likely leprosy in many ways is bull shit made up disease that’s sadly miss understood by society and many pore malnourished people were persecuted for. It’s the old n day’s buggy man, Staff bacteria on your skin can kill you if you get it in your blood system.

Why do we humans that love animals want to PET every creature we come in contact with? It starts at a very young age. I remember going to the zoo with my toddler girl who was 20 months old at the time, just learning to talk. (so cute at that age) Every animal we came across, she looked at closely and said, "Kie pet em?'". (She combined the words "Could" and "I" and it became "Kie" in baby-talk) Ooo, What's that, Daddy? Giraffe. "Kie pet em'?" What's that daddy? Rhino. "Kie pet em'?" What's dat daddy?" Meerkats. "Kie pet um?" The point is that as an adult who loves animals, I just want to pet that baby Armadillo. This is a very good thing too because when God's Kingdom comes to this earth, "The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent's meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD." Isaiah 65:25 Animal lovers, just another one of many indescribable benefits of knowing God. Do you know The Lord Jesus Christ? You can. You only have to BELIEVE. Romans 10:13

I think it correlates with our innate desire to socialize, or “make friends”. And if the creature is cute or seemingly helpless, it tugs at our desire to nuture, protect, or comfort. Not for all humans but many
