Does anyone know if the rhythm on the first half of the song has a specific name? I have heard a lot of folks say son, but it sounds different than the son and son montuno rhythms that I’m more familiar with
@cesarcastro53974 жыл бұрын
The first part its bembe yoruba afrocuban this type of sound was very comun in the 50's in cuban music if you heard miguelito valdez and others cuban of that era you'll recognize it immediately

Although Yoruba culture is at the center of this song, the rhythm in the first part of the song is NOT bembé. Rather, it was a rhythm generically called "afro" that was commonly used from the 1930s to the end of the 1950s to accompany popular music that dealt with themes of traditional African religion and culture, or perhaps songs remembering the enslavement of their people in the not very distant past. This "afro" rhythm was sometimes used to accompany songs based on lullabies sung by Afro-decendent domestic workers ("nannies") to the babies of the wealthy and light-skinned families they worked for. The "afro" rhythm was also sometimes played with songs derived from the calls street vendors (who were overwhelmingly dark skinned, as opposed to the light skinned Gallegos who seemed to own all of the nice brick and mortar stores) would use to hawk their products. Several other places had their own rhythms that were also generically referred to as "afro," so here in the US that rhythm was often referred to as "afro-cubano." In Cuba, they referred to their rhythm simply as "afro" since it was their rhythm. Today, the afro rhythm and the music that accompanied it is considered by many to be an archaic rhythm that belongs to an era in the distant past, perhaps the way we in northamerica might think of "dixieland" style jazz. The afro rhythm is rarely heard in Cuban or Puerto Rican popular music these days. Occasionally, if you listen closely, you might catch an arrangement that uses the afro rhythm for maybe four or eight measures to imply the era from which that rhythm came. This song and video for "Un Tabaco Para Elegua" is a rare example of a modern song that uses the afro rhythm as a substantial part of the arrangement. But the use of the afro rhythm is still the same - to evoke the era of the classic barber shop and grand theaters that are depicted in the video. Despite the fact that many consider this rhythm to be archaic, I find that it often provokes strong nostalgic emotions for a bygone era. There are still many people of a certain age (if not our parents then certainly our grandparents) who whenever they hear this rhythm they are immediately transported back to their first dance, their first kiss, their first love, perhaps even their first heartbreak. Play this rhythm for people of that age and I promise you there will always be a few tears. I enjoy this rhythm and its repertoire very much. I love those recordings of Celia Cruz singing in front of La Sonora Matancera long before she was crowned "La Reina de la Salsa." I'm thrilled that Orquesta Akokán has made the afro rhythm a relevant part of 21st century music.

I was able to get them from Daptone Records.
