Absolutely fascinating how it is mentioned that the current state of the road does not support public transport, and no further thought is given to developing public transport along the corridor. Looks quite likely that the proposed redesigns will support traffic volumes for a few years before the lower travel times attract so many more trips that congestion snarls the road once more. Absolutely visionary stuff!

I believe a better option would be to make use of the medium at ground level for a light rail corridor or a brt corridor. I think it's unusual that a thoroughfare of this traffic has no transit along its length.

@@namanish450 Not sure how useful a BRT / Light Rail corridor along its entire length would be though, since most of the traffic seems to be private vehicles using Orrong road to get to other major arterials. Considering that there is a train line that parallels Orrong Road, a public transport facility along the length of the road would more or less duplicate this existing line that runs towards the city centre. Building quality bike infrastructure in the vicinity of Orrong road would encourage locals to make short trips on bikes, easing congestion on Orrong road. Targeted investments in PT elsewhere in Perth could also help relieve demand for longer trips that use Orrong road, since it forms part of the arterial network. The one thing that is known for certain is that 6 lanes of congestion is no better than four - more road capacity rarely provides long term congestion fixes! (im sure I dont need to tell you that though)

Using the corridor for public transport does nothing to improve commercial vehicle travel times. Do you want 40 minutes of trucks emitting diesel fumes or five minutes of trucks emitting diesel fumes? Welshpool / Kewdale and Balcatta / Osbourne Park are existing industrial areas, connectivity between the two is necessary and that's not going to change.

Its all about transport vehicles (like Great Eastern Hwy) No pedestrian access without walking through / cross traffic lanes & waiting for traffic light signal. Over pass bridges or under pass access for everyone, not just transport vehicles. Great Eastern Hwy has cut Belmont / Ascot in half for people transport. No Over Pass access or Under Pass access with crossing 8 lanes of traffic at skinny traffic light points

I believe it will be smarter to decrease the speed and divert the traffic to tonkin highway through greate eastern highway, and this option will have a positive impact on the area around the road. Slowing the speed will also make people use more sustainable and generally more beneficial transit like public transit walking and biking.

There’s no reason option 2 couldn’t involve the expressway being continued under leach highway and still construct the flyovers. Or better still, a loop from westbound Leach to northbound Orrong, and the southbound Orrong to eastbound Leach exit passing under the surface level portion of Orrong road just before Leach. If a project of this scope is going to be done it may as well include free flowing movement between the airport and the city.

this should be a high priority project , our extra gst receipts and push for federal funding under infrastructure Australia should get this project funded and built sooner than later. Either needs to be wider or peak lanes built. My interest is in building the wider fwy network

All Perth civil engineers when designing literally any road project: "Let's expand it just enough so it will support traffic levels predicted in 3 months time. That way it will be congested again shortly after and stay that way for 20 years!"

Please for the love of God do option 3 this bloody Road does my head as I'm coming from the Perth Hills. It currently takes just as long to Traverse that part of Orrong Road as it does to get from the Kalamunda to the Leach Highway entrance of Orrong Rd

To clarify, you would NOT need to *close* Miles Road, you would only need to remove the Leach Hwy connection to Miles Rd. But surely, a link to Leach Hwy must be included somewhere. Perhaps a tunnel could leave the trench and connect to it somewhere? Secondly, couldn't it just be built as a tunnel for not much more than a trench? Would reduce need for noise walls along most of Orrong Rd - and then have a single two-lane link (one-lane either direction) from Wright St to Oats St to maintain bus route connectivity there (998/999) while keeping Oats St isolated from the Orrong Expressway. Wright St would still have its on/off-ramps. Yes I thought a lot about this comment gimme a break and some credit.

Option 4; Close the road as a major thoroughfare as we should not be encouraging private vehicle use in 2021. Traffic volumes on this road are mostly commuter (not commercial) and innovative public transport solutions should be used to solve this problem.. ~ shrugs ~

Public transport is expensive, useless, and inefficient, I'll take the car any day over buses or trains. I say we do Option 3 with 6 lanes in the expressway with emergency lanes.

it's a nice thought, but people live on this road. and it _is_ an important arterial road. shutting it off would be nearly as short-sighted and uninformed as adding another lane. a better option would be to add a dedicated transit corridor, as well as side streets for local residents to access their property and smaller intersections.

@@richardbug3094 Public transport is only terrible when it receives no investment. A well designed public transport system takes people who do not want to drive - but are forced to because of bad planning - off of the road, leaving more room for people who are wedded to their cars, or actually need to drive because of the nature of their trip. Its also completely inaccurate to label public transport infrastructure as 'expensive' - auto infrastructure is not exactly cheap, Richard.

we haven't gotten any updates on this, but I would expect further planning within the next year or two, and maybe construction commences by the end of the decade? Sometimes we just need to be patient and play the waiting game.

Why not construct the road on the same basis as the Poly Pipe? Make the highway 3 lanes either way and create a more community acceptable area above?

truckies struggle with bridges in Perth... clearly. if you do option 3. please make it tall enough for the idiots of which there are many. you do not want a truck stuck on an expressway, ever. if you get one. you'll get many. and tress. to help with the air quality is a must.

it is a nice concept though fails to look at the amenities that lay under between kewdale rd and the overpass on great eastern highway let alone the expanse of the start of the poly farmer through the tunnel mess adjacent to claisebrook/eastperth/mciver and perth stations thoroughfare never mind the impact of the excavation of earth and other materials that exist within the earth.. Not mention the impact felt within the properties within a 5-10 km radius of orrong road the freeway great eastern high way, bridge replacement/expansion/direct sinking under the swan you can't go knocking down heritage buildings just put this in.. where you going to put an 8+ lane road where you wasted cash installing 6 lanes decades ago you created a choke point at the tunnel and the traffic bridge..
