I use ortho-k and have used it for over 10 years. It is the greatest decision I ever made and highly recommend it to everyone that does not want LASIK and is tired of glasses and contacts during the day.

@@Ridku13 I put mine on every day, because I just do... I perfer consistency, but it lasts me about 2 days if I do not put them on before I notice it. I knew some people that use my same Dr put them on every 3 days and they are happy with it all the time. I will never go back to anything else.

I have worn them on and off since 2018, but I find it a bit if a mixed bag to be honest. They really are uncomfortable and a faff. I have to wear them every night, otherwise the correction is inadequate.

Ive been wearing ortho k lenses for about 3 years now and i think they really helped slowing down my eyesight. I have a pretty bad myopia (around -8), but it hasnt change at all since i started the treatment. I used to go down around -1.00 every year but it totally stopped after i started. The only problem is that because my vision is so bad and the treatment can only go up to -6.00, my vision isnt 100% clear, but it is still a lot better than without.

First let me say I enjoy your videos. I was surprised that people wearing the orthokeratology (ortho K) lenses all night did not develop other issues such as dry eye or infection. I wore the ortho K contact lenses fifty years ago when I was 11 years old. My eye doctor was one of the pioneering doctors at the very beginning of orthro K. At that time I wore a series of hard lenses during the day for a set number of hours and removed them in the evening. (He insisted that I do not wear them all night.) The intent was a gradual reshaping of my cornea to correct a mild myopia. The overall effect ended up being minimal and did not last very long. My doctor eventually determined though my myopia was mild, my corneas were too rigid to have any lasting results, so he discontinued my program. It is interesting to see how things have changed.

Kathleen, with respect the set number of hours was why probably it didn't work. Studies show it's less harmful in the 8 hours its in at night than extended wear contact lenses. Also the hydrogen peroxide cleaning regimen cannot fail to work. Infections are due to patient shortcuts. I tried it in California in 2014, no go. I tried it a month ago (with cataracts advancing as I reach older age) and 20-15. It's simply amazing!

I tried these last year because I didnt want to wear glasses or contacts for my wedding. Unfortunately I had the worst problem. I scratched my eye years ago and the lenses exasperated the scar on my eye. Such a disappointment but my good eye worked great so I definitely recommend using them if you're able.

Your eye doctor should've seen the scratch and warned u. Ortho K should probably not be done on scratched eyes for that exact same reason. Hope you're doing okay.

@@kweenjade01 I've never actually had any eye doctor (in office or in glasses store) pick up on it until I told them about it. I can wear soft contacts but they hurt for the first min or so after I put them in. I do get flare ups when it's cold out or I'm not feeling well so maybe I'm just more sensitive to it than someone else would be. Either way it stinks because they did work well so I would say if someone can deal with contacts to try them out.

I get where you’re going with this, but living with poor vision can significantly negatively impact ones life. I’ve been using ortho k for 3 years now. And I love them. It’s great to be able to see without anything and makes for a good convo. That goes like “what you’re nearsighted” “yeah 6 diopters” “you don’t have glasses so you’re wearing contacts?” “neither lol”. Yes I have 6 diopters, and from what I know there are some brand that fit further than that limit so don’t be discouraged to ask if your eye sight is bad as mine. But it’s not for everyone, I know a classmate who got a severe eye infection from improper cleaning of her ok lenses. Sometimes it can hurt but in those cases you take it off and put it back on (or so I was told). It does require a few visits to the doctor to get them working. For example I’ll be going bc recently my right eye’s getting a bit blurry. Oh and you can’t be squeamish! You’re basically putting a sharp glass object into your eye every night

@@sudosyyu I mean there are brands that do over -5 (like my case was -6) but the availability depends on your optometrist. You should ask them. It’ll be harder to adjust at first but not impossible. Also expect it as more expensive than the normal ones

I've been wearing contact lenses since I was 12 and am a severe myopic with -7 diopters (20/900) vision. I switched to Ortho-K 25 years ago. My optometrist said I wasn't a good candidate because my vision was so bad but he'd give it a try. After 6 weeks of gradually stronger lenses he said the corneal flattening was maxed out and a stronger lens would cause harm. When I remove the lenses my vision is about 20/80, deteriorating to 20/120 after 10-15 hours. He was disappointed but I was overjoyed! I wear them backwards, during the day for perfect 20/20 vision, and not at night. When I wake up I can read my wall clock, etc., and go about morning chores with ease and have a mild pair of eyeglasses I'll put on if it'll be a few hours before I put in the contacts. If need be I can pop them out to swim, be in dusty environments, etc., and still see pretty good. The only downside is I have to carry eyeglasses with the old pop bottle 20/900 correction when travelling in case I lose/break the Ortho-K lenses and can't get back to my optometrist for a few weeks.

@@marov7933 Like I said -8 diopters usually can't be corrected to 20/20 with Ortho-K but they sure can improve your vision when not wearing them and of course you're 20/20 when you're wearing them. Their downside is they're expensive, $1,000+ to have them fitted and $250 a set for the lenses which have to be replaced every year or two because they tend to warp from the pressure they're exerting. Most optometrists will want to see you every six months instead of every year to watch out for problems. Also not many optometrists offer Ortho-K services and it's best to get a referral to an accredited one who has extensive experience in Ortho-K. Many are not willing to tackle -8 diopter myopics unless you make it clear you realize Ortho-K cannot correct such severe myopia and are just looking for a significant improvement.

My Eye Doc worked Ortho K on me in the mid 80's to get my uncorrected vision below 20/100 so I could pass an employment related vision requirement. I wore the contacts that day until I took the eye exam. I passed 20/20. took them out and was 20/40 and 2/80 uncorrected. I had been 20/200 and about 20/300 respectively before Ortho K. I considered my Eye Doc a miracle worker. He changed my professional life so much. No one I've ever told this story to has ever heard of Orthokeratology before. With Lasic available today this might not be necessary any longer. It got me the job I wanted and then I switched to soft contacts. At 71 I now where progressive lenses for convenience.

@@sankalpshukla5981 The Ortho-K I had done was to shape my corneas on a temporary basis. I paid a flat fee and he put me into a couple different sets of lenses with each flattening my corneas a bit more until the maximum good affect could be reached. Different for each person. Flattening only goes so far until you reach a point that no more good comes about. To specifically answer your question. A month of different sets to reach the best I could get uncorrected vision wise. I wore them each day to maintain the best shape of my cornea. I never checked how long the flattening (vision correction) lasted. My best guess is one to two days. Hope this helps. The hard part was the discomfort of hard lenses. I was highly motivated. I eventually switched to soft lenses and my uncorrected vision didn't matter then as much one I got the job I wanted. With those lenses I saw 20-15 which is much better then 20-20 vision. Soft lenses don't give you the clarity that hard lenses do, but the comfort of soft lenses makes a guy willing to pay that price so to speak.

I got to have perfect vision without glasses and my prescription slowed down. Unfortunately, I’ve had to switch to soft contact lenses due to progression of astigmatism in one of my eyes which made the ortho-k contact lenses hurt to wear. I had been wearing contact lenses since I was 13, while all of my older siblings didn’t start wearing contacts until they were 17, because soft contacts didn’t come in until I was of age. They all got used to wearing glasses most of the time because they got into the hard contact routine, whereas I just wore my soft contacts pretty much all the time, and threw them away every day. Anyway, my prescription didn’t get worse over time whereas all of theirs did. My eye doctor said that my contacts were keeping my eyes in the shape that my corneas were in when I got the prescription

I did have a problem where my eyes were always irrated because of the contact lenses but it was my fault since I barely use my eye drops so it was drying and yeah, when I remove my lenses it hurts but best way to stop this, is to use your drops when putting your lenses on and when removing them.

One thing to note is if you have a low myopia like -1.00 to -2.00 you can get away with using ortho k-lenses only when you need to use them. I personally have -1.25 along some astigmatism on both eyes and i can get away with using them only once every 4 to 5 days. I Don't recommend this though as it will put more stress in the lens itself and have it worn out faster. Well you can always just buy new ones they are not very expensive. Here in portugal the WHOLE treatment goes for about 750€. That´s a damn fine deal for what they offer.

I've got myopia and astigmatism and they are around your levels, I can get away without using contacts or glasses. Only when I drive I need them. I'm going to see the eye doctor next week and I'm wondering if you cold discriminate a bit more. How much for the lenses? What does the treatment involve? I know they are personal but given your low myopia and astigmatism I imagine mine will also be in the same ballpark. I find 750 Eur quite a lot. My daughter just got these a few months ago, she said it’s so much better than glasses because she can see across her whole vision, not just through the glasses lens. She’s still getting the hang of putting them in a night as she hasn’t worn contact lenses before but she’s getting the hang of it. I used to wear Ortho-K lens 2 years ago. I suppose to be good candidate for this thing according to my profile. Unfortunely, with unknown reason the outcome wasn’t good. I’ve experience ghosting vision in indoor and at night which affect my quality of life and mental health. My opto helped me by checking everything but all fitting was fine. I might be rare case that the outcome turned unsucces.

This video was very interesting ty! I’ve been wearing Ortho K for around 3 years now and I’m 16! In the beginning, It was all great and my eyesight has improved drastically, the eye doctors have all been saying I’ve got perfect vision now, and I am really happy that I don’t have to wear glasses anymore! However, in recent 2 years maybe, I’ve had some problems with getting the contact lenses out, especially in my right eye. I am instructed to use the small plunger, and it worked fine at the beginning, but now, it’s very often, hurting my eyes, when I take the lense out with it. It’s not really pulling my eye, but creating a really bad pain in my right eye and lasts a few seconds, and make my eyes produce a lot of tears after it. Sometimes when it’s really bad, my eye(s) go blurry for a long time/ the whole day. I have talked to my opticians about this (everytime it’s someone different), and have been advised to clean the lenses more regularly, and the second time I brought it up, to use a strong eye drop they prescribed me before I take them out. I have done all these things, but still no improvement so far. I am really anxious and scared in the mornings to take my lenses off now, and I am trying to book an appointment for this week. In the meantime, do you have any suggestions for me? Thank you!

@@Hello-bp2fp Hi, I’ve not been able to book an eye appointment with my optometrist due to the Easter holidays! But since the last time I mentioned this, I’ve been using the Blink method of removing lenses that I had seen on another video form this channel, and life has been a bit easier I have to say! It’s scary at first and I have learnt that using this method requires you to take time, but my eyes haven’t been in extreme pain like before, but my right eye somehow feels a little spicy/ nippy after the lense is off, but only for a little while, and after I use the eye drops, it’s fine! But yeah, I probs might leave it and just mention it again to the optician the next time I’m scheduled to go for a check up :)

Have you tried lubricating the contacts (put in the lunrication solution (offered by doctor) same solution yiu use to put the contacts in - put the solution while you have contacts in the morning then wait 1-2 seconds and try to use the plunger to get the contacts out this worked for me

Worn OK lenses for 5 years, they practically saved my eyes. I didn't know I was going blind until they were already at 250 degrees. By the sheer amount of screen time for my underdeveloped eyes, it would be uncertain if my myopia would rise to 300 or 400 degrees the next year so my parents decided to get OK lenses (they're hella expensive). 5 years later my myopia decreased to 150 degrees (but I did gain some astigmatism). My advice is, start when you can because you can no longer use OK lenses beyond 500 degrees. It is amazingly effective if used frequently to slow down and decrease myopia (especially effective in children and teenagers). And it literally causes no harm to your eyes (I accidentally showed with them in once cuz I forgot I was wearing them). It's a really good investment both long-term and short-term, if it's not your cup of tea, just get some glasses.

I'll have to ask my eye doctor the next time I go in. I wonder though, as the shape of the eye changes throughout the day, at some point during the day would I have to wear my glasses again? If yes, wouldn't my glasses then be too strong as my eye wouldn't have completely gone back to it's original shape at that point? Just curious about this. Today I gathered with some of Mom & Dad’s old folks and his best friend since kids (Dad passed October 27-19) we had lots of memories so much fun. His friend’s left eye was so irritated and me wearing the thick eye glasses that embarrases me since 10, and I mentioned I wanted to have surgery on both eyes and one of the ladies said, “don’t”... my son is an Ophthalmologist and is introducing the ortho K lenses and gave me all the explanation and I’m fascinated‼️ had never heard about this new method. I wore the rigid/hard contact lenses since 23 (I’m 61 and it was easier for me to put them on better than the soft ones) until last year I couldn’t bear the one on left eye it irritated terribly quite often so I decided to wear the eyeglasses (had them made in 2019 advice from Dad) which were brand new and hated them. My questions are: 1. Are they worthy than surgery..? As surgery I understand lasts until the next approx. 7 to 8 years ? And in my country, Guatemala where I live, surgery where mom had hers Feb.2020 was US$1,000 for both eyes 2. How much is the cost for these lenses? Range in brands vary just an approximate. 3. How long to they last until I get the next pair? 4. Will they correct my myopia? 5. How many hours per night should they be worn? As sometimes we sleep more or less hours. 6. If it takes two weeks for the eyes to get used to them or vision to progress, what should I wear during the day, meanwhile, my regular eye glasses? 2. In USA around 1500-2000 dollars. 3. Almost certainly a year. 4. Yes! 5. 7-8 for most people. 6. This is a huge OVERSIGHT by doctors. Great question. No, your normal eyeglasses won't work as they'll be too powerful in combination with your Ortho-corrected eyes. You have to tough it out and STAY OFF dangerous roads and driving at night. Or, as the doctor to give you disposable lenses with power removed to allow for safe driving.

I've done orthoK for years myself. Slight astig. in left eye. Mild distance issues and when I wear them (every other night for me) the mountains and everything in the distance are super crisp! Love them. I was actually bummed that my optometrist didn't tell me I was a candidate for them until I found out about them myself years ago and inquired. I hated wearing glasses for distance and daily contacts were too drying in my eyes. I love them. Question to all of you using them, how often do you replace your lenses? I've had mine for a long while (years) and I think they are starting to fail (watery/scratchy eyes the next morning when I take them out). Time for new ones perhaps.

Hi, do these work for Keratoconus patients? Patients who have good vision with glasses also but halos, ghosting and light aberrations are primary symptoms?

Fantastic question. Although the original idea for ortho-k lenses did come from an eye doctor treating keratoconus with glass contact lenses, they are not approved or recommended for keratoconus, as our understanding of the disease has improved since then and pushing on the cornea when you have keratoconus can make the disease worse. Instead, scleral lenses, cone fit RGPs or even piggy backed contacts are often used and recommended instead.

I currently use Ortho K lenses and it’s great! Only problem is that it’s a pain to wash cause the process is tedious and the habit is hard to get into. If you’re not a patient person I don’t recommend it. It took me a year to get back into it and most of it is because I have school now which motivates me to use it.

Yes, neither of those conditions are reason for someone to not be fit in them. They are not the most comfortable right away, but usually you put them in the eye with a drop of gel and then go to bed right away.

The ortho K concept is good, non surgical and safe! would it be a better idea to develop a rather short time wearing to reshape the cornea instead of wearing the whole night? My daughter never had good sleep while on Ortho K for a year and got sick easily becos of poor sleep quality. We finally give up! If there's a new way of correcting vision using Ortho K concept but only spend a few minutes a day I'm willing to try again.

Doctor Eye Health - Enjoyed it. I tried it (well into or slightly past, middle age) in 2014, worked two days only. (Poor patience on part of doctor, I feel.) Tried it four days ago - from 3 diopters 20/150 and moderate astigmitism to 20-25/20-30 in 3 days. Two crucial things about your video which was great. 1. There WILL be glare especially noticeable when driving at night. This is true of Lasik and every other known myopia treatment, I'm informed. No getting around it. It's critical folks have glasses handy at night for driving. Or there will be accidents. 2. I am surprised you say more and more doctors are prescribing for kids? I thought Ortho-K (which obviously I swear by) is largely replaced by multifocal lens for the purpose of slowing childhood myopia? I thought multifocals worked as well/better and are less difficult for kids to follow? (I could be wrong.)

I just found your channel and am now subbed! I was recently diagnosed with Keratoconus at the age of 50. I have an appointment with a specialist at U of M in the next couple weeks. I'm trying really hard to get good at inserting my hard contacts, as I've never worn any contacts. To make matters worse, I have Rheumatoid Arthritis in my hands so I'm lacking good dexterity. I wore ortho-K. But they are such a faff and really uncomfortable. With age I started having very dry eyes, the worst at night, so I gave up on them. The eyes get too dry overnight that lense sticks to cornea and I need drops to re-wet it to be able to remove it safely. It's also really easy to hurt yourself at insertion or removal. There's a higher risk of infection too. They require consistent daily wear, but they also cause a lot of irritation and discomfort, so I often needed a break from them, but then it takes a week to get back to full correction after not wearing them for a couple of days. And the Inbetween days are tricky because you need additional correction during the day which changes every day. The night vision is also pretty poor, with loads of Starbursts, halos and reflection. My other concern was that while sleeping I often partly burry my face into a pillow when sleeping on the side which can press the lense into the eyes a bit, which leads to discomfort, and I worry that this can cause more serious damage. I think some night goggles to protect the eye might be useful. I need to decide whether to give up on ortho K permanently, as haven't been wearing them for 10 months now. I feel there's a lot that can go wrong with orthoK.

I wore Ortho K lenses for 2 months back in 2017 and just couldn’t carry on due to dry eye discomfort I had. I’m surprised they thought I was suitable for ortho k at the time as my dry eyes are a nightmare. I am now left with permanent night vision problems (starbursts, contrast sensitivity And halos). My optician said my eyes would go back to normal but they didn’t. I also had swathes of floaters to add insult to injury and that was when I decided to stop. I can’t stress how much I wish I never embarked on them. Still very much struggling this day with the night vision (driving is a nightmare) and the floaters I’ve learnt to live with. I’m sure I’m in a small % of people who have had issues but please know that there are life changing risks involved. I didn’t want to risk laser surgery but I’ve ended up with much the same side effects. Best wishes

Interestingly, I have also developed massive floaters in the first 6 months to a year of starting orthoK, and ophthalmologist confirmed PVD in both eyes (although only having massive ones that obscure vision in the right eye at the time). I didn't think this was related to OrthoK though. I assumed it was related to age + elongated eye due to high level of myopia (it's higher in my right eye). But who knows, maybe it could be related to OrthoK in some way. Temporally it certainly could be, but that's no proof of causation. My aberrations (ghosting and Starbursts) returned to being similar as pre OrthoK, but my night vision is definitely worse because of the floaters. I won't be going back to OrthoK, but I am really sick of glasses and my eyes are too dry for contacts. It's infuriating that more is not done to reduce levels of myopia. I had good vision until I was about 25. I then got prescribed -0.5 glasses and idiots told me to wear them all the time. Then over the years computer use became part of my everyday work life and from my early 30s to early 40s I progressed from -1 to -4, then got to -4.75 in my right eye by 47. Doesn't get much worse that myopia that's still increasing alongside presbyopia. I am really worried about retinal detachment.

@@jellyfish828 I really doubt Ortho-K has anything to do with it. Also, in terms of discomfort, everyone's eyes are different. I'm so comfortable in them (though I agree cleaning them is a royal pain in the ass) that if I press my head into the pillow and get a bad correction that night (1-out of maybe 10) I pop them in for two hours, voila, 20-20. I think they'll work for most people. If your eyes are really sensitive they won't. I actually found normal soft lenses from years ago to be far more uncomfortable.

No, it likely has more to do with the lens/muscles around the lens. You can have presbyopia with or without myopia. It's basically a special kind of farsightedness that is usually associated with age

Back in 2006 I got lasik. Eyes regressed back to pre-lasik vision after about 3 years and then I had terrible dry-eye which I use restasis to treat. Even before lasik, I was unable to wear contacts as they were just too uncomfortable. I am so disappointed in every eye doctor I have seen that they never recommended these as an option. I found out about ortho k last week and my lenses should arrive in a week or so.

@@Allan-et5ig So far it's been amazing! 20-15 vision after 1 day and still going. The company that made my lenses used scanes from my pre-lasik eyes (I just called the lasik company and they sent overt the scans) and I guess my eyes were in really good condition so I was a good candidate.

Thanks Mohammad. No, they do not use any chemicals or drops to change the cornea, although it is often best to use some form of gel or drop to help with putting them in at night. Otherwise the powers of the lenses are tailored to the power needed for that person.

ive been using ortho-k since i was in middle school but im finally thinking about stopping it at age 32. It's been great over the early years but I feel like at this point, it's time for me to consider eye surgery. My myopia isn't the worst, I believe it's still in the moderate range but I can definitely tell my contacts are becoming less effective that I might as well switch to an alternative at this point. Even when they were effective, I'd say in the last few years I spent at least 20% of the mornings/days with somewhat blurry eyesights so it's become too much of a pain. One thing that I'm not sure was mentioned here is that my doctor also said that most people tend to stop using ortho-k once they turn into adults so the idea that I'm still wearing it is rather rare but it makes sense to me since I can tell it's been getting worse over the years. So great stuff over the years but I'm finally moving on from it I hope. By the way, I didn't even know the term orthokeratology or learn much about this till the past week. I think that says something about either the industry or my specific doctors :/

I was recommended these form my optometrist but I’m only hesitant because of the cost is it like the same amount for regular contacts if so then I would get them but if not I don’t know plus I also need braces for my teeth and I feel like I only have one choice between braces or ortho k because I know my health insurance won’t cover the cost it never does
