As a fellow Lutheran torn between EO and Lutheran and RC... why did you choose EO, do you still have a special place in your heart for any of the Lutheran traditions?
@CrossingFist
@CrossingFist 4 жыл бұрын
M I chose the EO because I believe it to be the Church of the first millennium. The Church that Jesus Christ established on Earth. As for Lutheran traditions, the sacraments and liturgical worship are very important, but I’m becoming increasingly convinced that Apostolic succession is very important, particularly in the administration of the sacraments. I still love my old pastor and church friends.

@@MrPeterFranc the syriac orthodox church venerates Dioscorous of Alexanderia, Severius of Antioch and other Non chalcedonian fathers. Patriach Pope of Rome was not invited, it was done on a hasty fashion. The eastern orthodox church has anathemaised Dioscorous as Patriach of Alexanderia and Severius of Antioch. They believed in Monopysites chritology that Jesus was only god and not man. LATER the theology of Miaphysite was adopted. If eastern orthodox and oriental orthodox are to unite the oriental orthodox must accept all 7 council of the early church.

After studying the early church, I had to begrudgingly accept that the Catholic Church is the Church founded by Christ, and not the Orthodox. I do think that the exact role and extent of authority of the bishop of Rome needs to be formally addressed in a Council though. But that's the thing about Christ's Catholic Church: the Church He founded settled disputes in Councils. The orthodox haven't had a council since the split. Clearly this is evidence that they aren't the true Church founded by Christ, since this is what He established.

Harry Anderson It is because the the papists are Heretics the orthodox are older and they are Catholic , Paul had a separate ministry from Peter and established churches just like Thomas went to India and preached there, the 12 all recieved from Christ the power to preach lay hands on men and make successors of Christs church on earth whos head is Jesus Christ not the Pope!
@jeffdutcher3676
@jeffdutcher3676 5 жыл бұрын
Harry Anderson Jesus our Saviour, the Christ, said no one can come unto the Father except through the Son. Similarly, no one can approach the Son except through Church. A Christian cannot exist as an individual, but only as a member of the body of Christ, the Church. And the Church is there only when the truth is confessed. When Ecumenism, that is error is confessed, there is neither Christ or Church. And do not think this is the case only when Ecumenism is preached from the Altar. In Church we confess our faith through the name of the bishop we commemorate. True Orthodox commemorate True Orthodox Bishops, Arians commemorate Arian bishops, Monophysites commemorate Monophysite bishops, Iconoclasts commemorate Iconoclast bishops, Uniates commemorate Uniate bishops and Ecumenists commemorate Ecumenist bishops. It is possible for everything to appear Orthodox in a church, however the bishop that the priest commemorates will reveal to us where we truly are. Ask yourself who does your priest commemorate? Bishop Sotirios, and in turn who does he commemorate? Ecumenical Patriarchate Bartholomew, and who does he commemorate? Pope John Paul!!! So why go to a “Orthodox” church when you can go to a Roman Catholic Church what’s the difference they both commemorate the Pope. The tragedy is that Orthodox Christians have been united to the Vatican without being aware that it has taken place. All of which places everyone that follows the new calendar and ecumenism under Anathema !!

I love the Orthodox, but gimme a break. Grow a beard? Wear a decent robe and a heavy cross? How is that not pharisaism? We can all have our local customs and traditions, but don’t tell Roman Riters that they have to adopt Byzantine practices. We aren’t under the Old Covenant anymore, so we can’t have to wear beards. It’s completely optional. It’s fine as a custom of the Eastern Churches, but that doesn’t mean the Latin Church has to follow such a custom.

Christ had a beard because the Old Law commanded it. Christ and the Apostles did not instruct men to grow beards because we are no longer bound to the Old Law. Christ was also circumcised, however, we don’t require that for men for the same reason and per the Council at Jerusalem in Acts. So, if you are going to say that men must grow beards, you better be circumcised in order to be consistent.

Some eastern brothers think that Orthodoxy relies only in adopting the Eastern ways... in that respect they resemble the judaizers. And their Eastern ways are great, a true path to Christ. But to look beyond the merely local, one must have a little bit of Rome in himself. And Constantinople has always known it, and envied it.

Dear one of God, I very rarely read comments, let alone reply to them. Confirmation bias is a real thing, to all of us.... Let the reader hear and understand. However, if it is helpful to you, and you truly are processing things, which I have no reason to doubt, I would ask at least three questions. 1)Who evangelized the West? For example, if you look at the Great Ecumenical Councils, how many of the holy council Fathers were from the West, and how many from the East. This will give you an idea of the early missional impetus in the East,as well as a sense for major population centers of the early centuries... (and praise be God, the West too was coming to Christ.) 2) What effect did Islamic conquest have on the East? 3) What are you looking for? May God guide you in this most honorable question. Recently, I had to process this question and concluded Orthodoxy. Helpful on this journey was Fr. Josiah Trenham's, "Rock and Sand" and his critique of Roman Catholicism from an Orthodox perspective. Also helpful was Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick's examination of Roman Catholicism available as a free podcast at ancientfaith.com.... I have no hatred for Roman Catholics and many wonderful, sincere Roman Catholic friends. I could not become Roman Catholic ultimately because Rome innovates dogmas and the Orthodox seek to hold fast to the Tradition once received. This is a very different approach to Tradition. Orthodoxy seeks to preserve; Rome tries to hold up apostolic imprimatur to innovate teachings that the Apostles themselves did not teach or affirm. Herein lies a key difference, among others, that you will have to navigate and process. God bring you courage to be honest with why you are seeking and what you should look for. Let God be true and all humans liars. Your servant in intercession, Nuri.

That's actually not true as long as you talk about christian missions. Russian Orthodox preached to Siberia,Alaska and Japan. Christianity was brought to Japan thanks to Saint Nicholas.Under the leadership of Saint Nicholas (Kasatkin) of Japan, by 1870 the Orthodox community in Japan numbered more than 4,000 people, and by 1912 about 33,000 people and 266 Orthodox communities. Today the orthodox church there numbers about 50,000 people. Also the first Scandinavian christian king converted to christianity in the british isles and prior to the great schism the english church was considered orthodox. Also their first Saint, Saint Olaf the 2nd was also orthodox and he is honored by the orthodox church. None the less, the Orthodox church unlike the protestant missionaries and the roman catholic ones is the only church that respected Africa in its missions and does important missionary work without any interests and without disrespecting the people and their culture.Today the orthodox mission in Africa is done mostly by the Greek Orthodox Church in countries like Kenya,Madagascar,Uganda,Congo,Ghana and more. Also both Greek & Russian Orthodox send missions to Korea until this day and there are 2 korean orthodox ministries, one within China. Also the orthodox mission in India in this day is doing a marvelous work that western missionaries failed to accomplish without violence. An orthodox greek nun has managed to open in Bakeswar an orphanage with more than 400 children and 6 primary schools in the wider region along with her organisation for children whose families can not afford education at all.

Many Catholics easily stray away from the faith that they received. What are the reasons for their falling into complacency, becoming indifferent and even hostile towards Christ and the Christian Faith? The fault with many Catholics is that they think baptism is a graduation from having acquired knowledge and understanding of their faith. After completing their catechism classes or RCIA journey, they no longer seek out opportunities to continue growing their faith, both doctrinally and spiritually. Their only occasion to grow in faith is the one-hour Mass that they attend every Sunday. This is hardly enough to sustain the life of a Catholic. Those who do not grow in their faith are already losing their faith. There is no neutrality. How, then, can we grow in our faith? Firstly, we need to deepen our intimacy with God through Christ. In Christ, we come to know and love the Father. Secondly, we must be rooted in the Word of God. We cannot grow in our faith without deepening our love and appreciation for the Word of God through bible study and most of all, a prayerful reading and sharing of the Word of God. Thirdly, we must seek the support of the Christian community. A Catholic without the support of his fellow Catholics will eventually fall out from the faith, especially when he undergoes the trials and challenges of life, the influence of secularism, and the materialistic, individualistic and atheistic views of the world. Fourthly, to grow our faith, we need to evangelise and be a witness to Christ. We evangelise ourselves by evangelising others. By sharing our faith with others, we strengthen our own faith. By teaching our faith to others, we grow in understanding and clarity in what we believe in. Finally, growing in faith is to grow in our Christian life. This is the most effective form of witnessing. It means that those of us who are baptised must live a life of holiness and purity, free from sin and a bad conscience. A life of holiness and charity are the fruits of a strong spiritual life and a life of hope founded in the promises of God.

Not what the Eastern fathers say... "Peter, the chief and foremost leader of the Apostles, before a little maid thrice denied the Lord, but moved to penitence, he wept bitterly." (Cyril, Catech ii. n. 15) "Peter, the Leader of the choir of Apostles, the Mouth of the disciples, the Pillar of the Church, the Buttress of the faith, the Foundation of the confession, the Fisherman of the universe." (Chrysostom, T. iii Hom). "That great man, the disciple of disciples, that master among masters, who wielding the government of the Roman Church possessed the principle authority in faith and in priesthood. Tell us, therefore, we beg of you, Peter, prince of Apostles, tell us how the Churches must believe in God" (Cassian, Contra Nestorium, III, 12, CSEL, vol. 17, p. 276). @@josephwalker7867 St. Ambrose of Milan: “He (St. Peter), then, who before was silent, to teach us that we ought not to repeat the words of the impious, this one, I say, when he heard, ‘But who do you say I am,’ immediately, not unmindful of his station, exercised his primacy, that is, the primacy of confession, not of honor; the primacy of belief, not of rank. This, then, is Peter, who has replied for the rest of the Apostles; rather, before the rest of men....” [Saint Ambrose, The Sacrament of the Incarnation of Our Lord, IV.32-V.34]. St. Cyprian of Carthage: “To all the apostles, after His resurrection, He gives an equal power...the other Apostles also were what Peter was, endued with an equal fellowship both of honor and power...”(On the Unity of the Catholic Church, 4) St. Isidore of Seville: “The other Apostles were made equal with Peter in a fellowship of dignity and power.”[De Ecclesiasticus, II.5, M.P.L., Vol. 83, Col. 781-782] St. Bede: “Although it may seem that this power of loosing and binding was given by the Lord only to Peter, we must nevertheless know without any doubt that it was given to the other Apostles, as Christ Himself testified when, after the triumph of His Passion and Resurrection, He appeared to them and breathed upon them, and said to them all, ‘Receive ye the Holy Spirit: if ye forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven to them; if ye retain the sins of any, they are retained [Jn. 20:22, 23]. St. Cyril of Alexandria,: “One therefore is Christ both Son and Lord, not as if a man had attained only such a conjunction with God as consists in a unity of dignity alone or of authority. For it is not equality of dignity which unites natures; for then Peter and John, who were of equal dignity with each other, being both Apostles and holy disciples would have been one, and yet the two are not one....”[St. Cyril, 2nd Epistle to Nestorius] St Chrysostom applies similar titles to the other apostles and did not interpret the rock of Matthew 16 to be Peter. St Chrysostom uses this term to describe Peter, James, John, Andrew and Paul. He states that just as Peter received the charge of the world, so did the apostles Paul and John. Just as Peter was appointed teacher of the world, so was Paul. Just as Peter was a holder of the keys of heaven, so was the apostle John. He places the apostles on an equal footing relative to authority: "Angels often receive the mission of guarding the nations, but none of them ever governed the people confided to him as Paul governed the entire universe... The Hebrew people were confided to Michael the Archangel, and to Paul were committed the earth, the sea, the inhabitants of all the universe--even the dessert."[2nd homily Panygeric upon St Paul] "In the place where the Cherubim are covered with glory, and where the seraphim soar, there shall we see Paul with Peter, Paul who is the Prince and President of the choirs of saints." [32 homily Epistle to the Romans] "It is the Son of Thunder, the Beloved disciple of Christ, the pillar of all the churches in the whole world, who now comes to us. It is he who posseses the keys of heaven, who has drunk the chalice of Christ, and has been baptised with His baptsm, and who so confidently reclined on the breast of the Lord"... [homily 1 on Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist] “The merciful God is wont to give this honor to his servants, that by their grace others may acquire salvation; as was agreed by the blessed Paul, that Teacher of the world who emitted the rays of his teaching everywhere” [St John Chrysostom Homily 24, On Genesis.] St. John Chrysostom has not recognized in the Church any dignity superior to the apostolate in general. “Of all spiritual magistratures,” he says, “the greatest is the apostolate. How do we know this? Because the apostle precedes all others. As the consul is the first of civil magistrates, so is the apostle the first of spiritual magistrates. St. Paul himself, when he enumerates these dignities, places at their head the prerogatives of the apostolate. What does he say? ‘And God has set some in the church; first, apostles; secondarily, prophets; thirdly, teachers.’ Do you observe the summit of these dignities? Do you mark that the apostle is at the apex of the hierarchy-no one before, none above him. For he says: ‘First, apostles.’ And not only is the apostolate the first of all dignities, but also the root and foundation thereof.” [Homily upon the Utility of Reading Holy Scripture; cited in Abbe Guettee, The Papacy.] St. Jerome represents St. Paul as saying: “I am in nothing inferior to Peter; for we were ordained by the same God for the same ministry.” [St. Jerome, Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians, cited Abbe Guettee, The Papacy; clearly, if inferior in nothing (in nullo), then equal in every thing.] St. Theodore the Studite: “John was...equal with Peter” [see Oratio IX, Laudation in S. Joannem apostolum et evangelium, P.G. 99, 772A-788D], or rather the Apostle John was “the greatest of all the Apostles” [St. Theodore, Ep. II.41]

@@josephwalker7867 Listen to a few among many of - who you claim to be - your western Fathers speak against papal supremacy. Saint Ambrose writes: “Faith is the foundation of the Church, for it was NOT OF THE PERSON but of the faith of St. Peter that it was said that the gates of Hades should not prevail against it; it is the confession of faith that has vanquished Hades.”[xxxv] The truth professed by the disciple Peter is the foundation of the Church. No promise was made to his person. Saint Hilary of Poitiers (+358), acknowledges that it is upon the rock of Peter’s confession-that is to say, upon the divinity of Jesus Christ-that the Church is built.[xxxiii] He add, “There is but one unchangeable foundation,[xxxiv] that only rock confessed by the mouth of St. Peter, ‘Thou art the Son of the living God.’”

Baldness is a sign of humility, because in the end man will become a baby again and return to the womb: Weak, no knowledge, help from others, finally going to the ground (the first womb, our Father Adam came from). It also a sign of wisdom, because many men lose their hair by age YET have many stories and lessons (which are valuable by Christ) even though some men don’t gain wisdom, but still is a known truth.

This makes so much of bickering pointless. There are much more pressing matters at hand, like, dare I say it fellow Latins, out own Pontiff.

@Danny Pipes Infallibility only happens when the Pope has the intention to formally and publicly enforce a Doctrine in the Universal Church... Pope Honorius was declared a heretic because of a supposed PRIVATE letter... The Bishops understood the difference that is why they affirmed the papal infallibility doctrine... "For this is the rule of the true faith, which this spiritual mother of your most tranquil empire, the Apostolic Church of Christ, has both in prosperity and in adversity always held and defended with energy; which, it will be proved, by the grace of Almighty God, has never erred from the path of the apostolic tradition, nor has she been depraved by yielding to heretical innovations, but from the beginning she has received the Christian faith from her founders, the princes of the Apostles of Christ, and remains undefiled unto the end, according to the divine promise of the Lord and Saviour himself, which he uttered in the holy Gospels to the prince of his disciples: saying, Peter, Peter, behold, Satan has desired to have you, that he might sift you as wheat; but I have prayed for you, that (your) faith fail not. And when you are converted, strengthen your brethren. Let your tranquil Clemency therefore consider, since it is the Lord and Saviour of all, whose faith it is, that promised that Peter's faith should not fail and exhorted him to strengthen his brethren, how it is known to all that the Apostolic pontiffs, the predecessors of my littleness, have always confidently done this very thing: of whom also our littleness, since I have received this ministry by divine designation, wishes to be the follower, although unequal to them and the least of all." -----(Pope St. Agatho, Acts of 6th Ecumenical Council SESSION 1)

@Danny Pipes Really?? The Bishops rejected Pope St. Agatho?? Here is the 6th Ecumenical council Bishops reply to Pope ST. Agatho... "Serious illnesses call for greater helps, as you know, most blessed [father]; and therefore Christ our true God, who is the creator and governing power of all things, gave a wise physician, namely your God-honoured sanctity, to drive away by force the contagion of heretical pestilence by the remedies of orthodoxy, and to give the strength of health to the members of the church. Therefore to you, as to the bishop of the first see of the Universal Church, we leave what must be done, since you willingly take for your standing ground the firm rock of the faith, as we know from having read your true confession in the letter sent by your fatherly beatitude to the most pious emperor: and we acknowledge that this letter was divinely written (perscriptas) as by the Chief of the Apostles, and through it we have cast out the heretical sect of many errors which had recently sprung up, having been urged to making a decree by Constantine who divinely reigns, and wields a most clement sceptre." ----(Letter of the Council to Pope St. Agatho)

@Danny Pipes Did you even read the letter of the Bishops to Pope Agatho?? The Bishops said...."and we acknowledge that this letter was DIVINELY WRITTEN (perscriptas) as by the CHEIF of the APOSTLES, and through it we have cast out the heretical sect of many errors which had recently sprung up, having been urged to making a decree by Constantine who divinely reigns, and wields a most clement sceptre." The Eastern Bishops are actually borrowing the words of Pope St. Agatho when Pope Agatho invokes the name of St. Peter and that Peter's faith will not FAIL according to the promise of Jesus Christ....The Eastern Fathers describe Pope Agatho as if Peter is speaking through Pope Agatho...

Orthodoxy is the only way to save your soul,you are a member of the One and Holy Apostolic and Catholic Church giving your exams for your saviour. Anything else outside the Church is just herecy and God shall not recognise heretics in His second coming and they will find the doors closed and meet the darkness because of their blasphemies,so we tell once again to our heretic roman catholic and protestant friends to repent and return to the Church and have a true chance to save their souls and join His Kingdom.

I'm a practicing Catholic and have quite a bit of respect for Orthodox Christians, and really don't see a big difference between the two in beliefs. They both have their strengths and weaknesses. They both claim apostolic succession and claim to be the One True Church. I would personally like to see a reunification, but that doesn't seem likely. What do Orthodox Christians think of the Eastern Catholic Churches? They seem much closer related to Orthodox than the Latin rite.
@taliatut
@taliatut 6 жыл бұрын
escabrosa1 They kept the Byzantine rite while adhering to the catholic dogmas and pledging alliance to the Pope. They are fake Orthodox so to speak. We do not have the same feelings towards Catholisim, since we believe that it was the Rome which left other five churches and then it has drastically changed the teaching, to an Orthodox eye it is almost unrecognizable. Saying all this without any mean intention, it is just what it is. We would LOVE reunification if Rome comes back to Orthodoxy. Orthodox pay tremendous attention to keeping things the right way (apostolic tradition) - faith wise, first of all, as we believe that we are saved by proper faith.
@escabrosa1
@escabrosa1 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think faith is the problem, there's not much difference. The issues are political, mostly regarding Papal primacy and Filioque (semantics), not to mention a good dose of pride. Catholics have hierarchical corruption, while Orthodoxy has ethnocentrism as their big problems. Have you ever wondered why 90+% of Orthodox Christians are still in Eastern Europe, or recent immigrants from there?
@taliatut
@taliatut 6 жыл бұрын
escabrosa1 For catholics there are no issues in faith, because you guys don't know Orthodoxy and you don't really know your own religion, therefore don't see how different they are. That is why you consider filioque as semantics. When you look at pure words it might look like it is the same. But it is not about the words, it is about the meaning and interpretation. There are major dogmatic differences, big enough to split the Church. When it comes to worship, it is like heaven and earth. I would not be able even to pray with a catholic just because even the way you pray is so different (and prohibited in Orthodoxy). To answer your last question, that is because when the whole West went into apostasy in 1054, and then the Orthodox center of Constantinople fell by -15tg century, God installed Russia as the world center of Christianity. Vladimir Putin currently is the only president in the world openly calling himself a Christian and supporting traditional Christianity in Russia and around the world (in Syria, our Orthodox brothers, so that war is sacred for us). Russia gave as many martyrs in the 20th century, as there were in the first centuries of Christianity combined. And the blood of martyrs seeds the faith. Have you ever wondered why the West demonizes Russia and the whole slavic region so much, while it is an exploding center of spirituality and ancient faith. While they close thousands of churces in Europe turning them into stores and dance halls, a new church is built per day in Russia, monastic life is growing. God doesn't look at nationalities anyway, God look at people who accept Him and listen to Him.
@escabrosa1
@escabrosa1 6 жыл бұрын
And there's the ethnocentrism I was talking about, I'm sad to say. You are right about the decline of Catholicism in the West, but it's on the rise in other parts of the world like Africa. One of the great strengths of Catholicism is that it strives to include everyone. People demonized the Soviet Union, but I don't know any Catholics who demonize the resurgence of Christianity in Russia or anywhere else. On the contrary, we're quite happy about it. I personally think it's great and hope it continues. However it works out, I hope for reunification.
@taliatut
@taliatut 6 жыл бұрын
escabrosa1 Don't be sad, any Orthodox church would be glad to accept you, or any other nationality, we have many Catholic converts and sometimes total foreigners, who are real faith heros (ROC happens to be the most multicultural among other OCs), but it is you and your people who view our nationality as the problem. We do not think of our nationalities as special or God chosen - but we happen to be Orthodox and are humbled by this gift that our ancestors passed to us, often at the expense of their blood and sometimes it was shed by the catholic sword. And why don't you see the sheer hypocricy of your own statement? The Church of Rome is a national church itself, Vatican is Italian and is heavily associated with Latin world, at least 80% of Catholisim is concentrated in it today. Of course, His Word is that we must be unite. But we can't be unite at the expense of the truth. See, in order for any church to be fully canonical it has to precisely follow the apostolic succession and the canons. I already explained at length to another Catholic in this thread as to how and why OC resulted in what it is right now. It is because we strictly followed the canons that no church and no patriarch should be the head of the others, ALL of our bishops are equal. Thats how we believe the book of Apostles describes it and that is how it has always been practiced (before Rome disagreed with it) and that is why we believe that papal supremacy is a heresy and is against the Scripture, and against the canons. The bishop equality rule NATURALLY results in various national patriarchates. The OC works by the method of an ecumenical council, an "ecclesia" in a true sense of it, a democratic way, while CC is an autocratic, from top to bottom way, however only God has a right for that. We believe that the head of the Church is Christ Himself and only Him, there is no need for the "vicar of God on earth", Christ promised that He is going to be with us until the end of times. The OC might look like it is split, but it is not - I can commune in any other canonical Orthodox church in the world, and I do believe there is no Jew or Greek in Christ, it is the same service and faith worldwide, also one can look at it this way : here on earth we must learn how to love and surely it is harder to love an equal, because you have to humble yourself in front of each other equally. To love an equal foreigner is even harder (the Patriarch of Alexandia is a foreigner to my Patriarch of Moscow). The Orthodox method of councils is the method of trying to come to free will agreement in love. Free will is the key word here. By the way, Orthodoxy quickly grows in Africa too. With all my respect to the rest of the world, but it will be either the West (America and Europe) or Russia who will be defining the future face of the world. The world of Africa or Asia won't be able to form important centers of spirituality on their own due to various historical, cultural and economic reasons, and yes, due to specific traits of their national character (most of them continue actively practicing paganism after formal conversion into Christianity, and most of them are so poor they convert for perks anyway). At least, not in the nearest future. CC is big and rich and offers perks (since now that it is politically incorrect to evangelize by sword), while the headliner of Orthodox mission ROC has been in shambles for pretty much whole past century and needs time to gain strength. CC has been more successful at missionary work in the past century for these reasons, but OC is not looking for the number of parish anyway, proselytism is prohibited in OC (proselytism is often the true cause of why catholic missionaries are being killed, good example is India), and we look for the people whose heart is seeking the truth, who can come to us in free will. Not because they are offered material things, like charity, or political advantages, or psychologically manipulated into being a part of an important (read: rich and white) community, etc, but because they look for Christ.

It is about repenting to God the father through the blood of the son and being made a new creature by the holy spirit then proclaiming the good news with words and deeds until the son comes back. That is the true apostolic faith, the true orthodoxy. This clip stereotypes catholics while elevating the orthodox preists. Shame
