I just heard an awful Hillsong song (“This Is How We Overcome”), and I had to play this beautiful hymn to get the horrible taste out of my mouth. I’m so glad to be converting to Orthodoxy!

its quite a feeling, must admit. that switch from regular stuff to the soul-deep delight of ortho chants, that contrast can most certainly be felt with ease.

It would be nice to see some reference to the people who created the recording, in the description. Lovely to hear. Very spiritual and moving. Thank you for posting this.

Does anyone know if this is a specific hymn? I mean i recognize certain passages from scripture, but it seems like it's also arranged in a poetic hymn-like way. If i wanted to try to locate a pdf version, what would I search for? Thank you.

Yes, this is a hymn! "Evlogitaria" means blessings; we are blessing/praising the Lord's Resurrection. As with most Orthodox hymnography, it is poetic, but intended to be sung, and seeped in the scripture. This hymn is typically sung at the Orthros (Matins) service, which comes before the Divine Liturgy. Here's a little more information: orthodoxwiki.org/Evlogitaria

That's about right. The Greek used in Orthodox services is pronounced with modern Greek pronunciation.
@evangelosnikitopoulos
@evangelosnikitopoulos 3 жыл бұрын
It's the traditional pronunciation. Modern "Ancient Greek" pronunciation is a scholarly speculation that was invented in the Renaissance and only really adopted in the 18th-19th centuries. If you look at spelling mistakes in ancient papyri from the 3rd century BC, you'll see that the "modern" pronunciation was well established in Antiquity

@@evangelosnikitopoulos I think the OP was just commenting on the fact that the text is written in polytonic form. From what I've read, by the time this was likely composed, the pronunciation we use today was largely in effect though we could probably expect regional variations/accents/dialects.
