Ortlieb Panniers - Back Roller vs Bike Packer Plus

Yes, that is a plus for the Back Roller. I've had a baguette or two poking out the top after a local grocery run.

Thanks for the evaluation of these panniers. I once carried a 20 pound watermelon in one of my Ortlieb Bike Packer Plus panniers. I have used both panniers when I got mountain biking. My panniers are really beat up, but they still work fine. I do not have a car so I use them for hauling home groceries. They sure can hold a lot of food. I have ridden with them in torrential downpours with any water getting inside of. I bought a pair of them back in 2016 on clearance for about $100.00.

Hey, Graham. Nice comparison between these 2 types of Ortlieb panniers. When I bought my Ortlieb Back-Roller Pro Plus panniers, the determining factors were that they were on sale right before Black Friday last year, and their storage capacity of 70L. Interestingly, these are made of that Cordura-like material like your green Bike Packer Plus panniers, but share the design of your Back Roller Classics. I figured if I was going to buy panniers, they might as well be the largest ones Ortlieb makes so I don't have to fiddle around with too many additional bags on my bike. :-) I'm enjoying your videos, Graham. I tend to overpack my backrollers, that's why I bought two 40 liters rucksack covers from Decathlon, they are cheap but light and waterproof. I use them only when I have trouble rolling the closing in case of heavy rain. I liked your video. subscribed. greetings from Venice, Italy

Nice summary of the two bags. I'm replacing my trusty British Karrimor panniers after 25 years of use and I've decided to go for the Bike Packers, mainly because they look better on my classic touring bike.

thanks - an intelligent review - I switched my rollers to packers because i'm always overpacking and the rollers become a wrestling match, the packers take more and I prefer the ease of opening and closure of the packer. the outside pocket on the packer is a plus but I find its an awkward insecure design and things can fall out.. all the best!

I just bought the classic black. I like the pockets on the bike packers tho. I’ll use these for a while and see. I don’t think you need to roll the rollers and then clip them, tho. You can use the shoulder strap and just lock them down, right? As I understand the fastener aren’t meant to be clipped together like a dry bag…or am I wrong?

I use the Back Rollers and I prefer them. Ortlieb state that they are more waterproof as the lid and drawstring closure does not secure it as tightly as the roll top closure, but that only applies when it is pretty much submerged, which I have gone through while crossing rivers. Also one factor is that the Back Roller bags are compatible with the Ortlieb Rear Rack Pack which can be easily secured on top the Back Roller buckle system. By using a Rear Rack Pack you get a lot of extra capacity. I know that I could bungee a few items on top of the rear rack but I find it is much simpler to keep it inside a bag, so why not go for a bag which is compatible with the Back Rollers....just my two cents...

Regarding the rack pack, that's exactly what I wanted to confirm; thank you. I have both rear pannier styles, and I want to use my new rack pack on my imminent tour of Vietnam. I prefer the back packer plus panniers but I may need the extra room afforded by the rack pack. It looks like I'll be using my back roller plus panniers.

I don’t think the Bikepacker includes an external pocket any longer. Though this is available on the larger more expensive Pro Plus models of bags.

My touring bike is a 2014 Navarro Randonee. Nothing fancy. It has a heavy steel frame and is not very fast but is a very comfortable bike for long rides. No website. Thank you for the comment!

Just barely, my heels clear the bags by less than an inch, but I have big feet (14 US). The long rear stays on the frame of my touring bike also provide extra clearance.

FYI - according to videos and material from Ortlieb the way you are securing the classic bag is incorrect and will cause wear sooner. You are not supposed to clip on top after rolling as it creates deep creases in the material and reduces the life of the bag. Rather clip on each side to the straps below.

Some people have used these on front racks. However, it might be too big and the weight will impact handling and ride quality. Most front mounted Panniers tend to be smaller.
