Utterly in love with Orville and everything he does, he is literally the nicest artist I've ever met. I went in for a hand shake and he gave me a big hug. Everyone who cant get past his mask is missing out. He puts on a hell of a show and mixes punk and country perfectly. He VERY into country music, so no he is not mocking it. He is like the love child of Elvis and Johnny cash. Pony just came out in March and most of his shows have been sold out. He is a fucking star.

The only song I've heard of his that says "punk" to me is Take You Back, but I agree. He's a killer artist, and incredible live. He used to be the drummer of a hardcore/punk band, so it makes sense that some of that influence would find its way into his solo songs.

Timothy Richel Oh yes...so obvious here. He covers Faith, Dolly, and Reba. Yet has a rich baritone voice with a smooth vibrato. Like Sia, his identity is concealed. For the same reason he wears the colorful western getups. So we separate the performer from the song. The White Stripes did the same...contrast. Orville is the real deal. Most don’t get it, but that’s fine too.

you could argue that the real gimmick is to be found in the cult of celebrities and image-driven artistry, where looks and music get conflated. I see nothing gimmicky about not wanting to become part of that equation. I’ll say it again to be 72 and finally see gay men and women in the limelight, truly talented and being respected for their art. Orville is the best thing that’s happened to this old gay man musically since the Skatt Brother’s album from the late 70s. Nice to have out, loud and proud gay folk without being them being nailed to a “proverbial” fence. Pay attention to our politics, we might lose this freedom again.

In a nutshell he's saying that he's able to bring a sincerity to his music by wearing the mask that he otherwise wouldn't have. That in a strange way it gives him more confidence. That he actually studied the art form of mask making, and the use in different cultures. I could be totally off the mark here but I think that he might be Hispanic or Native American or whatever, and maybe feels like it would be harder for him to be taken seriously as a country singer because of that. It’s a play on the fantasy of being a cowboy and being “country”. He takes it to a place that doesn’t exist. It’s a lot more refreshing than all these half assed cowboys that talk about the confederate flag and ignore the reality of country and cowboy culture historically being oppressive and a morally void way to live. Instead him making it a gimmick allows the cultural inspiration still exist while adapting it in a more modern sense. Idk I understand how you can not like it but saying it’s poorly executed? That’s a little asburd
