I'll never pretend to know the pain gay men have had to endure now or in the past, but my brothers I ensure you the number of us straight fellas that accept you are growing every day. I am 60 and gay. I was in first year of university when this song came out in 1984. I had left home and lived in a large city. Everyone had an opinion about this song. Straight boys hated it. To admit to liking it was to admit you were gay. So I could only play it in my room on the lowest volume possible...and cried my eyes out. People forget how much people hated us.

It was the same here in England in those days & then in 1988 at 22 years old I realised I was Trans. These days things are just as bad if not worse. I am 58 now & don't know how i'm still alive. I have a lot of battle scars to keep me extra vigilant. I don't think that I could manage another savage beating from some random hater

I remember back to 1984 when the original Bronski Beat video came on Much Music and my father asked me what the song was about - I told him it was about a boy running away from home , a little while later I realized my Father knew what the video was about and it was his attempt at starting a conversation with me about who I was and what I had experienced - My father has always supported me in who I am . and still does but I wished I did engage with him at that time he asked about that video - Things you regret years later.- PS LOVE This Version - EDIT My Father passed away October 12th 2023 at the age of 94

Great story, think I understand. Forty years late, I realise that my experience of being gay undermined my self confidence to the point that I "lost my voice". Out but not happy, not awful proud. I was so busy monitoring and moderating my presentation, most of what I needed to say and share just got buried. I had decent support, but that habit persists to this day.

I remember secretly buying the original Bronski Beat album and listening to it in my room when I was in high school. I listened to this song over and over again while I struggled with my feelings of self-hate and disgust. Happily I grew through those feelings and, to this day, love hearing this song. Orville, you did Jimmy and Bronski Beat a justice with your version, and I love it! Thanks for making this 53 year old man happy with your version of a comforting old song. :)

This is wonderful what a great singer Orville is. My son struggled at school now nearly 25. Lives with his partner. He Camo out to his mum first. My boy is a beautiful soul inside and out. When a certain former religious friend realised he was gay knew the family for years. Took them off Facebook, all because what it says about homosexuals in the bible. There not friends, judgemental arseholes. My son went through alot , love him no matter what he's my son.❤️💙💜🙏👍🇬🇧🏴

I remember when Jimmy Somerville released this. I am that old. I am straight but could feel the pain that this represented. I wish I was more aware then than i am now of the struggle and predjudice that people faced. I love Orville and everything that he is. The really good thing is that I and my son love him too and can't wait for him to tour the UK. We are all equal. Why would or should it be any different. Love to all.

45 years ago this month, I fled my small home town of Syracuse, Utah for the big city of Salt Lake so I could start leading life on my own terms. It took another 5 years for me to come out of the closet (in 1985), and this song took on a whole new meaning for me. Thanks Bronski Beat for the original and thanks to my boyfriend, Orville for this fantastic cover!

Heh, the circle it complete. As a youth that song kinda gave me a empathy to young men who went through this, and kept me from the toxic homophobia that was all the rage back then. To hear Peck cover is awesome. Music and the world has come a long way.

It was really impactful for me to hear this cover. I'm female presenting but gender fluid and queer. I grew up in Appalachia being the weird outcast kid, and the original version of this song was really important to me in my discovery. I never would have believed I would hear a country-western version of it. It makes it so much more special.

Okay so I just heard him for the very first time today. The song was Dead Of Night. And in my description post of him I said that he reminds me of Bronski Beat Small Town Boy and Johnny Cash with style of Lil Nas and a sound little of Elvis. I start listening to the rest of all his music and out of ALLLL the songs he decides to cover. His song which was my very first reaction on his voice on the VERY first song that I ever listened to was this. Daily life for me of the gifted. My gift people, these are my gifts.

So is well worth watching for a great song and some nice railway shots. Sorry for my puffer nutter ramblings.
