It’s true that pioneers like Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson were ahead of their time, partly because they had access to groundbreaking equipment like modular synths, which were expensive and exclusive back then. This access undoubtedly contributed to the iconic status of many of their hits. Today, the landscape has dramatically changed. The democratization of music technology means that almost anyone can access a vast array of synthesizers right on their phone. It’s a shift that has made music production more accessible and inclusive, which is incredibly exciting

The pocket of that groove is very insane. You can feel OP pulling back on certain rhythms and pushing other ones. I’d love to know who the drummer is-it’s hard to keep the time incredibly tight. That’s exactly where a lot of drummers have ZERO skill. They might be able to play a bunch of different beats, but when playing with other musicians, those others musicians will pull the time forward and back-a good drummer has the steady quarter note INTERNALIZED and doesn’t budge, even when hearing otherwise. I bet 15% of comment readers will understand this from real life experience, but kudos to OP but also that drummer!!
@TheWorld_209911 ай бұрын
It’s a breakbeat…just a 2-4 bar loop. You can even hear that it’s not looped super tight, every time it rolls over it rushes a little bit, which means they should have raised the pitch slightly to make it fit better. I don’t know who the original drummer is, but in the 90s there were tons of breakbeat CDs you could sample.

@ZeRo-yc7zf10 ай бұрын
I don’t know shit but I’ve been making beats for years and studying jazz theory and history for a little over a year. Lofi uses stupidly simple chord progressions with synth sounds that would’ve been new & experimental in the 70s and 80s, and uses slowed down drum breaks, or synthesized drums that sound like slow breaks, and slaps a filter on it to make it sound old. Not that much to it. Oscar Peterson on the other hand, brought in sounds on the keys that innovated jazz still to this day. So to me it’s really no wonder that he just lightly fiddles with a synth with a drum break playing and it sounds just like lofi
