Oscar Peterson, even this many year's after his death, is still the standard I measure all jazz - not just pianists- against. He has a beauty elegance grace in his playing that does not fade with time. He had the ability to improvise but not lose the beauty of the underlying melody. In my mind, he is and was a giant.

He inspires me so much because of how hard he worked to reach the level he did. People will say Art Tatum was better, fine, whatever, but Oscar shows us that we can all strive and reach the heights we choose to if we persist.

There's a great video out there with Andre Previn interviewing him in front of an audience, and that subject comes up. It's funnier in the long version, but basically Oscar was a teenager and starting to get a little cocky, so his dad played him a record by Tatum. At first Oscar wouldn't believe it was only one guy playing. After being convinced, he gave up playing for a month. (I would have given up playing for a year, LOL!)

Oscar Peterson--- I started listening to Oscar back in the early 70's on KKGO JAZZ station out of LA and I always thought there had to be at least three piano players or more. I never had heard anyone play the Jazz Classics with all-time ten finger chords for every note. He played the melody, his style. The rhythm and chords with his left hand. And adorned the song with Ocar Peterson's own claasic style. Is the ultimate Classical Jazz Pianist in the world.

To me, jazz is not cheap entertainment (like much of pop music) that is easily discarded once the melody becomes familiar. The greats add so many layers and so much flavor to the music that you can hear something new every time you listen. In other words, enjoying jazz is more educational and takes more effort, which is why I think fewer people really enjoy it.

Quel talent...

When Oscar was at the Conservatorium of Music in Brisbane in 77 and we were going to interview him he was hardly in the mood for an interview. I suspect he was tired of the idiot questions that were fed to him. Joe Pass gave us an interview but I suspect we were the first to ask him. I found him a bit abrupt frankly. Recall our interview of Dudley Moore the same year. He was less that impressed with the reporters as well although because we had a Jazz Show he gave a great interview. anyhoo... I miss Oscar. But time only permits us a little time on the planet, and possibly a legacy that will last an eternity if we were worth it. Oscar will transcend the next ice age and on the other side when they find his music preserved in a silo somewhere, they will ask how did this guy do it?

Never fails...ppl assume that the only reason someone might dislike something like this is b/c they only like banal pop music (these days it's usually Bieber). Some folks, even those who listen to & play jazz, might have thoughtful opinions, so a particular performance might not appeal to them. I happen to be in that category. Oscar was a monster player, but he was not always the most tasteful player. Players w/his level of chops often succumb(ed) to excess, as in parts of his solo chorus.
@Beyondabsence
@Beyondabsence 3 ай бұрын
I agree, he couldn't resist his signature 1000 mph runs. Still, because he's Oscar, he's forgiven. But I see your point. Keith Jarrett and Herbie Hancock playing the same standard offer a much deeper experience, in my opinion. There are recordings and moments where Oscar Peterson was less flashy and much more profound in his harmonic explorations.

@@Beyondabsence Not that it's my favorite thing, but over the years I've come to more easily accept that stuff as just an aspect of his playing. Luckily, it wasn't all he did. BTW, I think the double-octave runs at the end here are just beautiful.
