My ancestor was on The Sea Venture that shipwrecked in Bermuda! His name was John Rolfe! He had a wife as well who gave birth to a baby girl on Bermuda. They named her Bermuda! They were stranded there for over a year. During that time, my 12 times great grandfather, John Rolfe’s wife and daughter both died on the island of a fever. He arrived in Jamestown with the other survivors (shipmate of Allison Janney’s relative). When widower, John arrived, Pocahontas was a prisoner of the Jamestown settlement. She was held captive in order for her father, Chief Powhatan, to not attack the settlement. John later had to get permission from the King of England to marry her. Which he did but only after she was converted to Christianity and renamed, Rebecca! Pocahontas was the first Christian convert in the New World! My 12 times great grandmother! So, the minute I heard the historian say the ship, The Sea Venture, I immediately knew our ancestors sailed together! How interesting!

@@Mama4Life I also discovered that Allison Janney’s 11th great grandfather also went back to England after arriving in Jamestown and then returned to America on the Mayflower! I also have an Ancestor who arrived here on the Mayflower! That’s two of my ancestors who were his shipmates! I think you’ll probably be really surprised what you discover in your genealogy research. If any of your ancestors arrived in Jamestown, Virginia, there’s quite a lot of well documented history on the colonists. Many of those original colonists didn’t leave Virginia until the Civil War, so they married those that lived nearby on the plantations that were given to them by the King. I’ve discovered 35 presidents, 6 signers of the Constitution, Patrick Henry, Meriwether Lewis (of the Lewis and Clark expedition), Kings and Queens of England, Scotland and France, Benedict Arnold, General Robert E. Lee, Martha Washington, Princess Diana, Winston Churchill, Napoleon Bonaparte, Daniel Boone, and even Jesse James! Good luck and have fun in your search!

@@KylieJonkman Your information is incorrect. Pocahontas was born September 17, 1595. John Rolfe arrived in Jamestown around 1610. He had to get permission to marry from the King of England after Pocahontas was baptized into Christianity in 1613. I believe they were married in 1614, making her 19 years old at that time. Their son Thomas was born January 30, 1615. They were invited to England by King James I while Thomas was an infant. Thy departed England in 1617 and Pocahontas became ill shortly after departure and died March 21, 1617 at Gravesend, England and was buried there. John Rolfe left their toddler, Thomas, in the care of his older brother, Henry until he was old enough to return to Virginia. Pocahontas died at the age of 22. So she wasn’t 10 or 11 years old when she married John Rolfe.

So cool, Janney and I are cousins. Hopkins is my 7th x grandfather. I've known all this history and took. an ancestral trip and many searches for years. Welcome to the very broad family Janney. One fact that they omitted was in Bermuda, Stephan was known to all by his bellows and constant appealing for help. News of this traveled back to England and Shakespeare wrote the Tempest and modeled Stephano after Hopkins, although he took license with him being a drunk.

He was 28 years old. Back then 28 was a very well established grown man, unlike the children of today. I'd trust a 28 year old man in the 1600's and 1700's with my life. I would not trust a 28 year old today with a box of doughnuts.

My family has ties to Jamestown also. My 9th great grandfather, William Hatcher, was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses in the mid 1600's. He was listed as living in Varina Parish. Got himself in a bit of a fix, kicked out of the House twice for not keeping his mouth shut. Did the whole "Mea culpa" thing the first time so he wasn't fined at that time but was fined the second time if I'm not mistaken.

You want to know why people went to Virginia in 1607? They went to search for exports to import. They also were sent to find the Northwest Passage.😀 It was a business funded venture. Which is why only men and young men went.

According to the native American accounts of Jamestown, the colonist at Jamestown spent all of their time and energy searching for gold, precious stones and pearls. After nearly starving to death, the Jamestown colonist then began to try to steal food and resources from the natives.
@shewill8618
@shewill8618 Жыл бұрын
@@thomasreaves588Culturally, there were vast differences and I am sure the native indigenous found them peculiar in more ways then one. And yes, they stole food very early on which unfortunately for them created hostility immediately. All they had to do was ASK. They also chose to build their fort surrounded by brackish water. With not having a clean water supply and no real workable skills compounded by a lack of motivation to innovate with forethought, it is easy to see why by 1610 almost 90% of the adventurers died from starvation and disease.

You are pathetic. This man was a good man, well-beloved. It´s not mentioned that he had any slaves. He wanted to be free of England, and true colonizers were usually people who were loyal to the Crown and sent to America to colonize and take the lands from the indigenous people in the name of the king. Other people who flew England were just refugees seeking peace.
