"Both Sides Now" by Emilia Jones
A music video focusing on the touching relationship between Ruby and her father.
As a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) Ruby is the only hearing person in her deaf family. When the family's fishing business is threatened, Ruby finds herself torn between pursuing her love of music by wanting to go to Berklee College of Music and her fear of abandoning her parents.

She resented her family a bit because she never had a normal childhood & had to be “responsible” for them at an early age interpreting in their behalf to the hearing people in their community. She was also bullied in school and there was a bit of dialogue that she had a “speech problem” developing normal vocal sounds growing up around deaf people and found early on that singing/music was not only her outlet but eventually corrected the “freakish voice” (as per her bully schoolmates) as she got older. The scene where her parents could not hear her sing in the Fall Concert was heart-breaking & had to rely on the reactions of other people around them to know if their daughter, Ruby really was a good singer. Just showed how alienated and isolated (& even insecure) the deaf family is from the hearing people in their town. Then later her father held her neck to “hear” her sing was a very poignant moment. It was beautiful, funny, & emotional. When she sang & signed BOTH SIDES NOW (A Joni Mitchell song) I lost it. BASED ON A FRENCH FILM . Btw, Emilia Jones (Ruby) is a British/Actress who gave a flawless North Eastern American accent, but also sang beautifully & signed perfectly - the latter which she did not know how in the beginning.

I loved the scene where her father asks her to sing .. and the scene where she is performing in school and they mute the whole music to show to the audience how her family is perceiving the whole show. And the last scene where she signs in this song. What a heartwarming film

It is as close to a perfect movie as you can make. Moves right to the top of my favorites list. Emilia is a brilliant singer and a rising actress talent for sure. Amazing movie and I grew up with Deaf people knowing British sign language on fingers. If you have not watched this movie do so, a game changer about disability and the OSCARS proved it, right next to Forest Gump, also incredible work from The Republic Records team for the movie soundtrack and Apple for being forward thinking and willing to take a risk, that paid off. Emilia is outstanding so look out for more on her soon. Shout to the cast and all involved. FANTASTIC.

What can I say beside that I'm really impressed! "Coda" is really fantastic and conveys feelings the same way as the original, I absolutely loved the movie and the vocal performance from Emilia Jones! The actor Emilia Jones is English\Welsh speaking with an American Accent. She learned both ASL sign language and to sing while preparing for the role. The scene where she auditions (singing) Both Sides Now and speaking to the character’s deaf family is like as she says, walking and alternatively touching your nose and tummy (switching hands). The scene had to be perfect on the sign language and her singing had to be good enough for critics to agree the character deserved entry to a performing arts school. And the makeup artist did a great job making her look cute. She’s more sophisticated in real person. She was 18 was casted and became 19 during filming.

People may have seen the movie as unworthy, but for me, it was something we needed at the time it was nominated and it served its purpose ever so beautifully.

I told a childhood neighbourhood friend of mine to listen to this. She has had a hard, sad and challenging year. She loved the original, but she loves this version and it says so much to her. Beautifully sung, and to get Joni Mitchell to love it means you've done something right.

One of the best most heartwarming movies I've ever seen. There's simply can't be any more than a few people on the planet that could have pulled that role off like she did. 👏 Bravo.

Sian chose 17 years old actress over 25 years old (CODA) actress for this film because Emilia has an innocent look as 17 years old starting off to enter a real world on her own. You cannot do that with 25 years old actress. Sometimes it is meant to be.

Some songs are timeless and Both Sides Now is one of them. Few have lived that can't relate, and those that can't relate haven't lived or loved.

Emilia does a fine job with the timeless Mitchell classic, it's certainly a tough cover. Listen to the gifted Jackie Evancho try it! kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4iXmKWOmq2mjc0
