The sitar is one of the toughest Indian musical instruments to play and it takes years to master. This instrument is used in Indian classical music and Hindustani music, the design and concept of the instrument is said to be inspired by the Veena. The Sitar has been used by various western artists.

Slumdog was filmed in India by Danny Boyle the British director. Boyle became a fab of Anurag Kashyap after seeing Gangs of Wasseypur. He particularly loved the foot chase scene through the gullies of the Mumbai slums, and asked Anurag to use the chase for Slum Dog. Kashyap said sure, because he was a Boyle fan, and it was copied almost step by step.

It is actually insulting to call it Lion King, in fact diametrically opposite 😄 In this piece for that scene in Slumdog, called Mausam and Escape on the soundtrack, AR uses the initial mellow guitar (for Latika), soft melodic and romantic, but interprets Dev Patels anguish distress and fury at her kidnapping with the sitar, used like a rock guitar (that Asad Khan smashes out of the park). This is the opposite to how these instruments are used traditionally. One small example of the man’s genre-unbound peerless magic, that even the majority of western composers (film) can’t perhaps sustain over 30+ years And has kept evolving, no question of rinse repeat, breaking ground with each album… The west really are at loss here but thank you for coming again into the magical world of A R Rahman., this is just the tip of the iceberg… Hope these experiences can help broaden your bored skeptic friend’s horizons 😂
