I was honored to be a student of Jerome. We are both basso cantantes and share the same birthday! He was a giant of a man and his heart was as big as the universe.

What a magnificent and regal instrument Mr. Hines possessed! In this age of mushy Bass voices his powerful, secure and resonant instrument is sorely missed !

Jerome Hines the greatest...He was and always will be one of the giants. Many thanks Mr Shore for this wonderful recording. God bless you.

live performance : 1 Jerome Hines = 20 Samuel Ramey .

You can say that again.

Jerry once told me that he had always wanted to be the "John Wayne" of opera singers! :) I think you made it Jerry
@OscarLevant18 жыл бұрын
No, to Hines, born in 1921, John Wayne was a symbol of American strength admired around the world. Your definition was not shared then and is even today a prejudicial reading.
@jackhousman66377 жыл бұрын
He was no actor, if that matters.

Whoa, music historians look very kindly on his acting in opera.

With all due respect, I think that honor goes to Jose Mardones, no offense. But Jerome did his very best. :)

I am a russian opera singer(bass). Mr. Hines is one of my most favorite singers. May be there were some greater basses, but Jerome Hines 's records I love the most!
@OscarLevant14 жыл бұрын
He was one of the greatest basses. I don't know about Russian basses. They make a kind of sound we don't like in the West. To me, the great basses of the 20th century were Mardones, Pinza, Siepi, Hines and Tozzi. Each has his favorite :)

@@OscarLevant1 I didn't mean russian busses! I am agree with your least. I prefer our composers Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Rakhmaninov, Skryabin much mire than basses from Russia. That's because all the italians, teachers and singers were in the US and in Italy..

@@OscarLevant1 First at all i say you: Bravo! And second ,from all russian basses It's worth hearing Mark Reizen.

@@hanssachs3022 I also really admire the sound of Vladimir Pasyukov, even though he, afaik, sang Choir and not especially opera :D

@@OscarLevant1 If you knew more about bass singing, you wouldn't be so enamored of Hines's labored, wooly sound that deteriorated very rapidly. I mean, just listen to the opening track. He can't hold a note steady for more than ONE SECOND. You don't know Sibiryakov??? The most technical bass of all time?? Or Vasily Petrov? Vladimir Kastorsky? Aleksandr and Grigory Pirogov?? Dmitri Bukhtoyarov? Come on, man.

Am sure Hines recorded "Nearer My God to Thee," live or in the studio. But have yet to find it. Would love to hear it--
