This is the last song I showed my mother before she passed away last Christmas. I remember it with complete and utter clarity. As she lay in her hospital bed, I placed my headphones gently on her ears and pressed play. I remember all the features of her beautiful face, each line and crease had a story to tell about her life. And what a life it was, filled elation, joy and unequivocal love, along with sorrow and more pain than I care to imagine. Her strength and love is something that I can only aspire to. As the song reached it crescendo I watched as the hairs on her arms began to slowly raise created by tiny goosebumps. Then as the song slowly drew to an end, I witnessed the most radiant smile along with one....just one little teardrop falling from her cheek. We didn't need words... When her eyes stared into mine it was the warmest, most pure love only a mother and her child could possibly convey. We were absolutely blissful in the sound of silence.

@@flipper9038 I agree they likely aren't jealous, however, I would also like to point out the songs Scarborough Fair and Bridge of Troubled Water. Furthermore, I think that they would be pleased and flattered that such a talented vocalist likes one of their songs enough to want to recreate it. I mean come on David has a 4 octave range - that's the same as both Anthony Kiedis (Red Hot Chilli Peppers) and Freddie Mercury (actually I think his is 4.5, but beside the point). At least 3 vocal coaches on KZbin that I know of have responded to this version, and were blown away by his technique and power. Here's a link to one of those reactions: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIe1qpeddteki9U

Fun Fact: The symbol for the band Disturbed, used originally as art for the band's Believe album, is actually made up of four religious symbols: The Jewish Star of David, The Wiccan Pentacle (often confused to be a satanic symbol), The Crescent Moon of Islam and the Christian Cross. The idea was for it to be a symbol that represented Unity especially since most of the band was raised Catholic save for lead singer, David Draiman, who was raised Jewish and claimed that while they don't believe in religion itself they do believe in God.

I tended to agree with John Undefined’s comment with regard to Disturbed’s cover; I was listening to their “Official Music Video”. I definitely preferred Simon & Garfunkel’s version! Actually, as I first began to listen, “creepy” was the word that initially came to mind (and just Too slow). But then I watched/listened to Disturbed sing it on Conan, and I have to say that I Did appreciate That rendition much more! I really liked it, and the reverence with which he sang this beloved classic clearly rang throughout; I was moved, much more so than my initial listen to the official video cover. That said, in no way did I personally feel that it was somehow “better”, superior to the original. The lyrics themselves, were so spot on in ‘64 when Paul Simon wrote this song, and if possible, even more so now~ they’re hauntingly bleak, despairing, & yet, somehow soulful, hopeful… Paul & Art’s voices, tempo with which they gave life to those lyrics, imo, only served to make them even more hauntingly, beautifully poignant. Having since read a little background on why Disturbed wanted to do the cover, some other facts.. I think I most appreciate Disturbed’s version, not as “a better cover”, but as a loving tribute to Simon & Garfunkel and the song lyrics Paul had written. in that regard, I believe they excelled. 😊

So....just an hour ago....at work...mopping floors...an after hours gig to earn a few extra bucks. I put some music on to brighten a sluggish job. I let youtube play on its own. Just as I'm finishing up John Denver comes on singing Country Boy. Then.....this comes on. Immediately caught my attention. "Who's this" I think to myself. Over to the computer I go. Disturbed? Within 10 seconds I've got tears streaming down my face. This is THE most incredible cover ever done by anyone. Not of 2020 but mid of 2023 and leading into the Beast system (New World Order) which is sometime in 2024... Everything is biblical including this song which sings of the first Antichrist (neon god that we created, AI system) which everyone will bow to and lose their souls... Laugh all you want but its true... and only the few will open up to the truth and realize what's truly going on while the majority willfully cover their eyes and ears to truth... They can't handle the fact that they've been living their lives wrong this whole time, they cannot accept that God is real and that we've been lied to this whole time by everyone in control... Everyone will have a choice to make very soon, but sadly a lot of you will choose wrong...

Even as that silence is aiding the black clouds of death come overwhelming me. Suffocating me. Until one day I give up. I give in to death. I lost. Nothing could prepare me for this. Now I am no longer existent. They told me there was a god who would take care of me. Yet I see nothing. Everything that has been told to me were lies. Lies told by the servants of death. The second we're born we are vunerable to disease famine. Death. Why are we still here? No one knows. We all see the world from one place. Our own place. We never. see what the other person sees. We never hear what they say. We are all in our own world. What he hear is completely different from what others hear. We don't know our true friends like we do. We know nothing. We are all fools listening to the black cloud. Why?

If Disturbed is heavy metal..then what I usually listen to must be just craziness to most people..xD. Disturbed used to be a hard rock band in my opinion..now they have just gone a bit softer. I wouldn't categorize it as "heavy" metal though...maybe metal. If you want heavy go listen to Lamb of God, DevilDriver, or In Flames older music. It is good stuff. :)

I just watched 2 tribute videos featuring this song to HALO & Darth Vader - both are extremely powerful and makes you want to cry. The perfect soldier Master Chief fighting for what he believes and the fall of the Chosen One. This song applies to almost all situations & people in this world.

People talking without speaking....people listening without hearing That's so true of todays society. People don't have real conversations anymore rather they rely on their texting and tweets. We need to sit with others more and actually talk and learn what is going on around us.

I remember when starting my journey into metal music around 2 years ago. I'd heard some songs by disturbed and loved the band. Then heard they had covered this song and took a listen to it. Till this day when listening to it, i still have the same reaction as i did 2yrs ago. Brings a tear to my eye and goosebumps all over my body. Bloody phenomenal cover of this song. Seriously draiman's vocals are fucking beautiful.

You do realise that there is no real "silence", right? Or at least the average human hasn't experienced it. There's always some sort of background noise, whether it be the wind, the leavs on the trees, or birds.
@TheCruelDead
@TheCruelDead 8 жыл бұрын
+Jeffrey Stanley So you haven't experienced the "sound of silent" yet? You're totaly right when you're saying that there's background noise, but there is something beyond. It's very special, you might say it's not "earthly" but it still exists. And if you're listen close enough you might here it, and you want to enjoy it as long as you can.

when I first listened to this song I was on the verge of tears at how powerful this cover is and I was also caught off guard because I thought this would be like down with the sickness style, you know angry. I was very wrong. Oh, and the 'neon god' that the song refers to is the television and the 'sound of silence' is the brain. No, I'm not a philosopher if that's what you're thinking. I just looked it up. But I can give modern philosophers a run for their money because I can be very philosophical when the need for it is great.

I don't see it as "television" but alienation as a whole that didn't let out people's inner voices

That is the beauty of a really good musical track and the lyrics therein, the meaning is open to each listeners interpretation, for whomever listens and how they interpret it, their reflections and their life's experiences will give it whatever meaning they wish to impart Even a change in mood by each and every listener can provide an even more enlightening meaning. Despite what the original author intended.

+Paul McK You couldn't be more right, that's why I said "I don't see..." because, as you said, everyone has different ways of thinking, and as you also said, if a song manages to inspire people in multiple ways that's also fascinating
