Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng discuss the 57th Academy Awards in 1985, where "Amadeus" nabbed eight wins, including Best Picture, Best Director for Milos Forman and Best Actor for F. Murray Abraham. But the ceremony's legacy might just be Sally Field's oft misquoted speech.

Amadeus was a very deserving winner of Best Picture, it was so strong overall and its observations about human nature and the risk of self-destruction were brilliant. I also loved Placed in the Heart - I realize the subtle and not-so-subtle religious themes won't appeal to everyone, it depends on your own beliefs, but the final scene was beautiful and touching. (Forgiveness was a big theme in several films that year.) I think A Passage to India as very good. While I'm glad that The Killing Fields told the true story of Dith Pran and brought attention to the reality of what the Communists did, the treatment and portrayal of the lead figure Sydney Schamberg was weak. On the acting front, all I can say is that F. Murray Abraham was amazing, it was a master class of a performance.

Tom Hulce was Quasimodo in Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame which is massively underrated, and Hulce also is the OG in A Few Good Men. He played Tom Cruise's part on Broadway.

Amadeus & The Killing Fields are classic, but I wish Once Upon a Time in America had gotten some Oscar wins and nominations as far as great 1984 films go

Woody Allen = Great. If better pictures were released in 77, Annie Hall would not have won. If Platoon wasn't released in 85, Hannah and Her Sisters Would have won and is EASILY Woody's Best Film. We'll get there soon.

I love Amadeus so much, it’s one of my favorite movies of all time. Honestly, looking at the past Best Actor winners and thought if there was one year that I thought there should have been a tie, it’s 1985. While F. Murray Abraham rightfully deserved his win for Amadeus, his co star, Tom Hulce was equally spectacular in the title role.

I’d argue Howard E. Rollins Jr. in A Soldier’s Story was also a strong contender for a Best Actor nomination since he was three years removed from his Supporting Actor nod for Ragtime

Lovely entry, though Maurice Jarre's best score win at which he gave the quip of the evening was for "A Passage to India,' not "The Killing Fields," as initially reported. Speaking of "Passage," was and is easily the next contender for BP, and, as Kael pointed out at the time, David Lean working at the top of his game, which is the top of THE game. Saw it again, recently, it more than holds up, until the steam goes inevitably out after the courtroom climacteric. Also, Alec Guinness in brown face as Pro. Godbole is obviously untenable. Still, Dame Peggy is transcendent, Judy Davis deserved best actress as much as Sally -- and Sally is magnificent in "Places," as is the film, #3 BPfor sure -- Victor Bannerjee ought to have been nommed, and it's a great final film for Lean. Jeff in "Starman" would have my #2 after a fantasy tied #1 for Abraham and Hulce, and the absence of Ralph Macchio is both understandable and annoying, well. And totally agree on Best Song slate-- not a loser in the bunch. As ever, youse twose are the berries. More, please, thank you. 🎉😊👍👍

Not a bad comp with Milos and Ang. They both win Oscars tho Ang doesnt get Best Film But they do both create way different projects all of the time which is why i choose Ang as one of my all time fave Directors. BUT Capshaw, polarizing??? Yes, horrible and annoying to the max right under Fanning in War of the World's.

Why are tge Oscar's so obsessed with 3 hours? They never do it. Just aim for 4 hours so you don't rush the acceptance speeches
