i saw the film although is well crafted... it seemed to me the beginning where Gabrial askked her to marry him aout of the blue... i meant they did not spend that much time together before and for him to propose to her like that simply made a foolish impression of the film... it's simple not possible, it would have been improbable that such act in real life would have happened. i know it's a fictional story but common... tha moment to me was tu vague. but i kept watching the movie and it was real good actualy and i fully understood her decisions.

the whole point of the story is to offer the 21st century viewer a glimpse into the society of the 19th century, where marriage was merely a contract signed with the purpose of sharing and developing assets.

Perfectly normal for two people of landowning class in the 19th century. Liking and respecting one another was sufficient. It was about securing the land and providing heirs to inherit it. Romantic love is very much a more modern concept, but even now landowners are careful about who they form liaisons with.
