Historic! People these days just don't know! This was so crucial and also so well deserved for each of them. Award shows are so vapid and self congratulatory now but back then iconic moments like this happened.
@charlesswitzer83782 жыл бұрын
I watched this when it aired---20 years ago now, wow. Sidney's was honorary, but up until Denzel later won, Sidney was the sole African American Best Actor winner in 74 years. Halle and Denzel winning Best Actor and Best Actress was a huge moment; there was no social media then, but people talked and wrote about it for weeks after. But even Halle is sore that she remains to this day the only African American to ever win Best Actress.
@EchoJ2 жыл бұрын
I guess I’m just the jaded and cynical one who thought this was manufactured, planned, and disappointing that the Best Actor/Actress awards were given to such accomplished black performers portraying the most negative stereotypes. “Two birds in one night” indeed, Mr. Washington.
@Eec20232 жыл бұрын
I hope I live to see the day when we stop patronizing black people. They are no different than anybody else. Why do we continue to count the first this and that.
@kendallrivers11192 жыл бұрын
@@EchoJ Yeah that's pretty cynical lol. Listen, the important thing is that Denzel and Halle KILLED their roles in those movies and deserved their Oscars because their performances were the best in their category. We gotta stop worrying about impressing white people because at the end of the day Black people are multi faceted and layered and we come in all shapes and sizes, good and bad etc. there's no such thing as just "positive' black people like there is no such thing as just "negative" black people, we are both. We can be negative but I choose to be proud because such great talent were recognized in three black superstars.

He can play a cool, calm & collected badass (Man On Fire, Equalizer) just as well as he can play an over the top corrupt cop (Training Day) & a brilliantly awkward lawyer (Roman J Israel, Esq), just to name a few of his diverse roles. The range he has is incredible & I dare say that nobody can deliver a moving speech in a movie like him.

Denzel Washington is the greatest living actor and probably one of the greatest of all time. Here's why. I dont care if it was a cheesy 90s flick like Virtuosity or a classic like Glory with that single tear, he NEVER phones it in. He breathes life into a character that was born on paper. Nothing short of magical.

I am from Germany and I was born in 1988. This was the first Academy Awards i watched. I was so happy for Denzel and I recognize now, that Julia was so happy for Denzel like Anne Bancroft was for Sidney Poitier when he won for Lillies of the Field. i don't see white people complain Daniel Day Lewis got an oscar for playing a corrupt oil tycoon. Just be happy for Denzel, the Oscar was long overdue. I am sure if DiCaprio got an Oscar where his role wasn't really the best one that year, people would still be emotional like Julia Roberts was here, because it was about damn time.
@calvincandie93459 жыл бұрын
+cpfishfan14 but Denzel had already won an Oscar before this so its not the same thing. And the reason people were ok with Lewis is because its one of the top 5 best performances of all time, Denzel in Training Day was not (despite still being an amazing performacne of course)

Some of y'all need to stop complaining about denzel getting this Oscar over Russell crowe. denzel deserve this Oscar because they cheated him outta the Oscar for Malcolm x. There are a lot black actors who deserve Oscars but never get nominated or they get cheated out of it. Wesley Snipes, Angela Bassett, Samuel L Jackson are a few who should've gotten one by now
@alexstanton8311 жыл бұрын
I agree but the academy shouln't based on that for a win. Lorraine Braco did a fantastic job in Goodfellas but lost to Whoopi because they owe her an oscar.

I love Denzel Washington, a premier actor of our time, but Crowe in this movie was an all-time epic performance. I appreciate that Denzel has one on his mantel, he definitely deserves one, but this was not the year he should've gotten it. You don't give payback when another gets shorted. That's not how these awards should be handed out.

Well that's the thing, or at the least the funny thing with this movie and it's Oscar nominations... ethan hawke, for all intents and purposes, plays the main character in training day... he is the protagonist and in other words has the leading role, I think he does actually have more screen time in the movie as well. Despite this, their nominations are reversed and denzel is nominated for lead and ethan supporting. Now I'm not saying I don't understand why this happened haha or that there aren't speculations to be made, I just always thought it was a bit funny and wanted to point it out.
@tomtalks234 жыл бұрын
@@MaddestMousse Simple answer is Denzel is a much bigger name and had a better shot at being nominated as a lead, so the studio campaigned him as a lead. But it is absolutely a supporting performance. I don't have an issue with it. It was like Marlon Brando in The Godfather or Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs, it wasn't a lead performance but it was so captivating that it felt like one.

This is the problem with the Academy. I have the highest respect for Denzel, he should of won for Malcolm X or Glory, but Russel Crowe's performance in A Beautiful Mind was not only easily the best performance that year, in my opinion, it was one of the all-time great performances. Crowe won the previous year for Gladiator, which was a badass movie don't get me wrong, in fact his performance was really good. However, what he did with John Nash was nothing short of genius.

I think the most incredible thing about his win is that he was going up against such obvious oscar bait performances like Sean Penn's, but Denzel was so damn good and iconic that the Academy had no choice but to honor the best performance of the year.
