The "Gated Reverb" technique in 4 levels of complexity

Here we learn a classic sound design technique, where we add a large reverb to a sound, but only play it in short bursts. This adds the excitement of big reverb to our sound, while also staying snappy and rhythmic!

This is great. I believe a lot of the 80s sounds, it wasn't even always the snare being sent to the reverb, but a gated pink noise.

I like triggering a gated pink noise sound, then put my gated reverb on the pink noise, not the snare. Sounds awesome.

Put it on the closed hi hat sounds great. I also tried to make a bus to my snare, put the reverb and gate on the bus and then make the gate have a decent attack to get it bouncy

I like that in fl studio's convolution reverb plugin, you just have to shape the volume automation line to gate your reverb impulse. It's so fast and precise :)

Excellent video on this topic. Sidechaining from the dry sound is so obvious now you say it! Easier than messing with hysterisis and works on gates without this function, so much better in this application.

I've been making synthwave music for the last year, and the weak part has always been the drums because I relied on plugins or samples. Can’t wait to try using this technique and digging deeper into using gates!! Your gate tutorials have been priceless. The point about using envelopes isn’t something I’d thought to use. Have you considered doing a tutorial on multi-band effects processing using the effects rack? Seems like an invaluable tool that a lot of producers I know (myself included) only have a surface knowledge of i.e. multi-band compression ala the Waves C4. Apologies if you already have a video on this, I didn’t see it in your catalogue.

Honestly, explained very quickly and clearly a concept which I had a bit of trouble with. I basically only knew how to make a gated reverb at what you would call level 1 complexity, but in 10 minutes I got to making a much better-sounding gated reverb. Thanks 🙏
