This is a 44.1kHz normal quality audio file because my sound card could not handle the 192kHz, high quality audio. I used my phone along with a stripped headphone cable to hook it up to the oscilloscope. Attach the ground from channel 1 and 2 to the shielding of the cable and then attach channel 1 to one wire and channel 2 to the other. If the image appears reversed, just switch the channels. I just played Jerobeam Fenderson's youtube video through the iphone.
Jerobeam Fenderson created the sound file so check out his channel for more awesome oscilloscope sounds.

Hey, Proto G, I believe that the retrace lines you get at~0:12m is caused because you have the scope set to AC mode, but Jerobeam, the creator of the track, intended the scope to be viewed in DC mode.

For a more stable image, use a very short audio cable and make sure you strip the wire at exactly the same length! :) This insures the proper phase alignment for X and Y, and makes sure X and Y data is happening at the right time, in sync with each other. Also using the 10x setting on the scope probes makes it even sharper! Jerobeam Fenderson made this sound file and more, so if your interested in this kinda thing definitely check out his work!

I actually prefer the way it looks on my scope over his. Secondly, I didn't overlay the sound file, I actually used a splitter so you can hear it exactly as it is playing through the scope.

Hi maybe you can help me. I tried doing a oscilloscope similar to yours but with an old tv by connecting the deflection coils wires to 2 different audio sockets but I'm running through a big issue. What I get when I turn the tv on is the initial dot in the middle but it stays super small and becomes really really crazy bright and after a few seconds i hear a small sharp pop, the display shuts and after a big static noise appears ,coming from the back of the tv and continues until I unplug the tv. Any ideas on what's wrong ? I would greatly appreciate if you could give me any hint, thanks a lot.

Can you do this with a DSP?
@ProtoG42
@ProtoG42 8 жыл бұрын
+motherjoon Do you mean a DSO? If so, you can as long as it has an x-y mode.
@motherjoon
@motherjoon 8 жыл бұрын
+Proto G No. I meant a digital signal processor. Its a processor which you can process an incoming signal in near real time. You also need a ADC and a DAC to convert analog to digital and digital back to analog. May I ask how you did the actual processing of the audio file?
@ProtoG42
@ProtoG42 8 жыл бұрын
+motherjoon There is no processing of the audio file that's why I thought DSO made more sense than DSP. The audio file is simply playing through my phone's headphone jack with the wires stripped and the left audio channel connected to channel 1 of the oscilloscope and the right audio channel connected to channel 2 of the oscilloscope. If you go to Jerobeam's channel you can download the file and try it for yourself. Creating the audio file is a bit more complex and involves a lot of math.
@ProtoG42
@ProtoG42 8 жыл бұрын
+motherjoon I forgot to mention that after you hook up the audio cable to the oscilloscope, you have to put it in x-y mode for this to work.
@motherjoon
@motherjoon 8 жыл бұрын
+Proto G I know that my good sir. by how do you differntiate the two channels inorder for this work. you need some sort of signal processing between the two channels to create the traces. The DSP you leave the first channel untouched and feed the second channel to the DSP. You write a code that applies a certain transfer function to the first channel and then you hook the output of the DSP to the second channel. You can then control the X-Y mode in near real time. I assume what you used was a pre-made audio file with differing channels that creates such patterns when you feed the L and R channels separately in X-Y mode correct?
