When the reference of the weak signal is available (and used as a strong signal to sync on it), then the averaging mode (average between consecutive traces) will turn the oscilloscope into a lock-in amplifier. Very useful trick, indeed, when it comes to measuring repetitive but small signals that are flooded in noise.
