Hi please can you explain exactly what the front porch, back porch and horizontal sync periods are for?

What do you do when you need to clean the oscilloscope ports? I've heard Brasso does a great job! (sorry, could not help myself)

They shouldn't really get that dirty with use but I always go for deoxit for cleaning any electromechanical connector or switch.

Great vid. ;) Don't worry about including an even more in-depth stuff if you do a follow-up. It's worth pointing out that a 10x probe / setting is actually recommended for a lot of high bandwidth analog / high speed digital testing anyway, especially when the circuit-under-test has a fairly high impedance, or is sensitive to the impedance added by the 'scope probe. (also confusing at first is that the 10x setting on the probe actually attenuates the signal by a factor of ten, so the o'scope itself has to multiply that voltage reading when the scope is set to 10x mode.) Man, I'd love a decent oscilloscope. I've never had a modern one. I don't do a great deal of analog testing, though, and a lot of the digital stuff is debugged via JTAG or logic analyser these days. Can't wait to see a follow-up to this vid. The hour flew by very quickly.

At the most basic level an oscilloscope lets you observe voltage levels of one or more signals in a 2 dimensional plot as a function of time. So the vertical measurements and divisions/graticules are going to be voltage levels and the horizontal divisions/graticules are going to be time. This should be rather obvious looking at a scope but I don't think the video covered this most basic of explainations and it can be helpful as a starting point for thought on the subject.

"It's essentially a time machine" 😊. Amazing video. Such a good idea, gentlemen! Isn't it a good idea to pair a probe with a channel permanently? I.e., use matching colored ring for the channel you wish to use a probe with to the ring on the probe itself, and then set the compensation while ON that specific channel, and try not to use the probe on a different channel next time since it could mess up the compensation?

Also, a video for regular North American cables like composite, S-Video and YPbPr would be cool.

I’ve only ever used a scope in college and at work years ago but never had to update firmware. My current position is purely digital design so don’t work in the lab anymore. Do I gather from your comment at the unboxing that Rigol charges for firmware updates?!? Here I was looking to finally buy myself a Rigol scope next year but this would be good info to prepare myself

Explaining the grid on the screen and the differences on how to do these measurements on an older analog scope would have been cool. Older scopes are way cheaper and easily cover all the needs of what your checking.
