So 変態　(hentai) is written with the kanji for "weird" and "shape, situation, condition". Towa tried to convince Mumei that the 変 is 愛 (ai, love) and read it as "aitai", which is normally a totally different word: 会いたい (literally "I want to meet (you)", or also "I miss you"). From the verb 会う (au, to meet). Aitai as 愛態 isn't really a word, but I guess you could read it as "the condition of love" (i.e. the state/symptoms of love).
