Andrew M The police need a lot of things, especially considering the anti police sentiment right now, however I dont think armored vehicles are in that list (with an exception for SWAT.)

It's hard to believe that we've gone from the Light Scout Car requirement of 1940 that produced the Willy's Jeep of WWII to something resembling a mobile fortress. I'm sure the L-ATV is fully capable of meeting Army's design requirements and I realize that protection of the crew is paramount. But it's heavy and bulky and after continuously increasing weight and size, greater mass becomes less mobile. Fewer vehicles will be able to fit into transport planes; heavier lift-capability helicopters will need to be used; and only the strongest bridges and road structures will support it, something not usually found on a foreign battlefield. It's also expensive at about a half-a-million dollars per unit.

+33VMUH yep while the enemy is using the toyota pickup just fine . the price of one of these equals a fleet of toyota's sure it isnt armored but its just as versatile cheap to run, bomb proof is relative anyway to the size of ied so it doesnt matter
@TristanCzerwinski
@TristanCzerwinski 9 жыл бұрын
+belbro62 Yeah, they use Toyotas, which are constantly getting shot to shit with all occupants dead. Honestly at least this is way lighter and mobile than an MRAP. Those things look like mobile fortresses. The JLTV looks more like a modernized humvee with better armor.
@pyrocentury
@pyrocentury 8 жыл бұрын
What are you talking about? These L-ATVs are designed to restore the mobility crews had with the original un-armored version of the Humvee. It's literally more mobile than an up-armored Humvee. It offers the same protection against IEDs as the MRAP at one third the weight, designed specifically so that possible to be carried under a Chinook and Super Stallion and by amphibious vessels, things impossible for an MRAP. At roughly 14k lb curb weight, they can operate on almost any roads. Half a million is not expensive in the context of the vehicles they are replacing. An up-armored Humvee cost 220k. An MRAP cost close to a million per unit. An L-ATV serves an operational role that neither of its predecessor is filling.

The truck looks amazing but just by looking at it I see one flaw. The radiator is exposed to small arms fire. Now there may be some special technology that counteracts a bullet puncturing a radiator, but if not it will be left dead in the water. And this is just a prototype and they will probably add 1/8" deflection screens if this vehicle ever goes in dervice.
@LibertyFirst1789
@LibertyFirst1789 8 жыл бұрын
I see the problem: you're not looking at the radiator, you're looking at a huge metal plate.

Wow it really does handle those dirt roads impressively and so much better than the Humvee ever could. Why don't you remotely control that thing and roll it over a roadside bomb so we can see what it's really made of and/or let someone tag it with an RPG. At the very least put that thing thru some real paces in terms of terrain and not this Sunday morning drive we see here.
@Galf506
@Galf506 9 жыл бұрын
+irie4lifeyall while you're right and this is a shitty demonstration (but a cool show off nonetheless) you gotta remember that... - these aren't meant to surive RPGs... they will be able to with some kind of spaced armor, like grids to detonate warheads early, but as we're seeing every day, even poor guerrilla forces are moving away from standard RPGs, in favour of more modern tandem warheads and ATGMs, which this thing stands no chance to survive (and it is not supposed to!) - I really want to see an IED survivability test but these will travel with an MRAP lead vehicle that's supposed to detonate IEDs... it does look like it has some pseudo v-hull stuff going on on the underside, so that's a good sign. What I hope is that these vehicles can survive HMGs from most angles, are spacious and comfortable to get in-out quickly, aren't a maintenance nightmare and get a relatively good fuel economy. Because that's what they should do! The Humvee did neither of these things well, it was a huge truck with little space inside and pretty much all opinions I heard of it were extremely negative.

+ Galf506 The RPG-7 has been proven to penetrate against 24 inches of steel (just to give you an Idea, most Main Battle Tanks only have around 18-22 inches of armor at its thickest points.).

@Galf506
@Galf506 9 жыл бұрын
+Homer Simpson Most tanks have an effective protection equal to 600+ mm of RHA. Armor penetration of "classic" RPG-7 warheads such as the PG-7VL is 500mm RHA. Western tanks are mostly invulnerable to such warheads, you need something with 800+ effective penetration

Supercharged, turbocharged, technologically hyper advanced and BIG. If this thing breaks down in the field? ZERO chance of quickly getting it up and running again. A rebuild on this engine? Probably $150,000. A new engine? Probably the same. My second issue with this is forward visibility. VERY poor. A semi-truck is FAR better as far as forward view is concerned.
@pillcosby546
@pillcosby546 6 жыл бұрын
Umaxen 00 This truck uses the same engine you can find in a heavy duty Chevy Silverado. It's not $150k to rebuild the motor lmao. And supercharger AND turbocharged? It's clear you don't know what you're talking about!
