In the early 70s, I was asked to teach what was then the first yoga program at a Federal Prison facility in the United States. Approximately 100 inmates chose to participate in the program which was held twice a week over a period of two years. It was a very profound experience for me. The first thing that struck me was how serious and respectfully each of the inmates took the hatha yoga practice and meditations. Their energy and focus were very strong. Second, was outside the fact these individuals, got caught and were sentenced for their crimes, they were really no different in their dreams and aspirations from you and me. What was different was the abnormal incarceration environment in which they had to navigate their daily lives. In a word, primitive, which in my judgment was society's early interpretation and application of judgment followed by an extended period in hell. This was not a place of penance but rather, punishment, which I believe is not the best deterrent for future crime. The changes I would alternatively propose would include building these facilities into rite of passage communities where they are challenged to find enduring purpose and selfless service for their lives and world. It is worth noting that through this program, several inmates with whom I stayed in touch, continued their practices and became actively involved in the practices of yoga and zen.
