In this video, the OSI and TCP/IP models are discussed and compared at a high level. Note that TCP/IP’s bottom two layers are called a lot of different things (ie, Network = Internet, Physical = Network Interface, Network Access, Link, Physical) but I’ve carried network and physical over from OSI to TCP/IP to provide clarity here.

I recently started looking at the F5 DevCentral videos to learn about the product(s) and one of the most impressive things about these videos is that ability of all of the presenters to write backwards. Seriously, I mean it must be a requirement to be a part of the DevCentral team. The videos are informative and interesting too but you guys write neater than I write normally. Suggestion for future video - Network placement/deployment scenarios and caveats. Which comes first the Chicken (Router/Firewall) or the Egg (F5 GTM/LTM/WAF)? Pros and cons to each. I mostly work with SMB's that have firewalls on the edge so placement best practices logic eludes me. Plus I'm a bit slow. Thank you.

not to burst the cinema magic bubble, but we aren't that talented! We flip the video in post production. Placement is always an interesting discussion, and the answer is different given the business, security, and deployment goals. We can queue a reference architecture discussion for sure. Thanks for the feedback.

Hello, I am an engineer in South Korea. I have a question. There is a lot of debate about ARP layer in the local community. I personally think in OSI 7 Layer 2 but in TCP/IP suite, IP encapsulation can be added and become 3 layers. But it's only conjecture, and when you search, there's a mix-up of opinions. I wonder what you think. I would appreciate it if you could give

The Address Resolution Protocol is used for interlayer handoff or you can phrase this interlayer discovery. ARP enables the IP packet to travel seamlessly to the next layer. ARP acts as a bridge between Layer 3 and Layer 2. Once again, the primary purpose of the Address Resolution Protocol is interlayer discovery. This is unique to IPv4 and IPv6. Other protocols that map to the OSI model do not require an ARP like mechanism.

From my understanding, the protocols that separate data into packets, such us the TCP, are on the Transport layer. So why the PDU of the Network layer is the one called packet?
@devcentral
@devcentral 2 жыл бұрын
It can be confusing sometimes, especially with models created in the late 1970s and early 1980s - like the OSI model. More info from Techopedia: In layered systems, PDU represents a unit of data specified in the protocol of a given layer, which consists of protocol control information and user data. PDU is a significant term related to the initial four layers of the OSI model. In Layer 1, PDU is a bit, in Layer 2 it is a frame, in Layer 3 it is a packet and in Layer 4 it is a segment. In Layer 5 and above, PDU is referred to as data.

If I open Chrome and log in to my KZbin account, and then I open a private browser via Chrome and log in to my friend's KZbin account, then does the Session layer distinguish between data that is sent to and from those two different types of Chrome browser windows?

The L7 Application is not the application itself but the protocols that the app uses such as HTTP, HTTPS, SSH, eg. Right?
@devcentral
@devcentral 2 жыл бұрын
correct. the applications that utilize those protocols push data onto the stack appropriate to the protocol, some at multiple layers given requirements, dependencies, build environments, etc.
