Description: It's fascinating to view myth as the essence of how we humans have learned to live (and not to die) over millions of unconscious and at least tens of thousands of conscious years before "civilization." Let's find out what role myth still can play in our lives.

seeing all those books on your shelves strangely encourages me to want to read more books- I say strange, because I've never personally been an avid bookworm myself, but I can't help but draw the correlation between the amount of books you must have read with how beautifully you articulate your words and of course just how knowledgeable you are in general and I guess I secretly aspire to reach the level of cultivation and intellect that you have! I almost always find myself drawn to your videos for this reason, and of course the relaxing symphony of sounds you produce haha Edit: In other words, I kinda see you as a role model in a weird way?¿

Danie you may or may not find this useful, but I was suspended from my engineering program for failing too many classes over a few semesters, so that shocked me into pursuing something Im actually passionate about (i like science but was passionate about it). Profound video. I am so glad I "stumbled" upon it. It touched upon the import of metaphors and allegories. Esoteric hidden meaning can be shared, but cannot be taught. Only the open heart can receive the symbolim of the "mother", "father" and "son" (within the individual). This same parable is being told over and over and over. The good "berean" can explore it in SCRIPTures of all sorts, including that of Osiris-Isis-Horus that you shared with us here. It's also cloaked in FAIRy Tales (Jack in the Bean Stalk for example), movies, music, nature...on and on and on. It's all about energy, vibration and frequency. Tesla G-NEW (gnosis).

Dang I like your stuff but I feel like Peterson's neo-Jungian archetypes are pretty much just astrology for 20's/30's white dudes on Reddit. Especially ones who are in STEM and suffer from the Dunning-Kruger effect that seems to make so many engineering/IT/chem majors vulnerable to the idea that the intro philosophy courses they took freshman year make them more knowledgeable about metaphysics and epistemology and ethics than actual philosophical scholars. Peterson's just been debunked by so many actual philosophers/historians/sociologists/anthropologists/theologians/mathematicians/biologists/neuroscientists/fellow psychologists that he really has no credibility (look up Jordan Peterson on /r/bad philosophy or /r/badhistory or /r/bad pretty much anything; you'll see what I mean). Seriously, the man claimed that Hitler won by a landslide; that there was a genetic link between race and IQ; that Nietzsche once said "one must imagine Sisyphus happy" (sorry, Camus); that feminists secretly want to be brutalized by Muslim men; that apple cider was what caused him to make an ass of himself on Sam Harris's podcast (and caused him to break the world record of days without sleep, somehow); and that, in the 1960's, the disgraced Marxists tried to sneakily rechristen themselves "post-modernists" in order to push a new and improved "identity politics" brand of oppressed vs. oppressor ideology onto the impressionable youths. And, after what, three years? we come to find out that, with all of his railing against Marxism, until a few months ago, his knowledge of Marxist theory was based off of having read "The Communist Manifesto" once, like, 40 years ago. I just hate to see a genuine-seeming dude like you get sucked into Peterson's poop. He has some nice ideas on how to improve your life, but, in my opinion, the dude should have stuck with the self-help stuff.

I'm no qualified to refute any of that, and perhaps he does speculate too far outside his expertise, but his analysis of neuropsychology/anatomy and the psychoanalytic interpretation of myths is some of the most captivating material I've ever come across and is really all I'm interested in of his I've been reading Jung's "Red Book" and his autobiographical accounts of his active imagination make a strong case for the relevance of mythical figures as insights into our psyche and perception of the world.

@@LetsFindOut1 Aw shucks. Thanks for replying. I feel like I was a little mean in that first comment.I hope I didn't offend; I really do enjoy your videos. I've just been a bit frustrated by the whole Peterson phenomenon lately. I've noticed that a lot of people who like only some of what Peterson says end up buying into a lot of other stuff without realizing it, because it's difficult for any individual to refute everything he says, considering how many different fields he borrows from. As someone who knows just a little bit about psychology, philosophy, and neuroscience, I can say that it's often apparent that he knows even less than I do, which is saying something. When it comes to Jung, I think his contributions to psychoanalysis and to humanist psychology are undeniable. That said, it's important to recognize where he, like every other pioneer of psychology, fell short. The book *What is Wrong with Jung* by Don McGowan is a pretty good summary of the criticism of Jung's theories, though it should be taken with a grain of salt. I don't think the issues McGowan points out are necessarily issues just with Jung, but with the fact that the nebulousness of some of Jung's theories have permitted certain modern Jungian psychologists to utilize his theories in rather shitty ways. For example, Jung's early ideas can be criticized as eurocentric and reductionist, or as gender-essentialist and sexist. Jung was an anti-semite, in a way that Jungian psychoanalyst Andrew Samuels considers too vehement to be attributed to his time. Here's an article by Samuels: www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/belief/2012/jan/25/carl-jung-century and a video in which he discusses his book *Jung and the Post-Jungians*, which I also recommend: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5rWhqGhq5qLh6c Here's another interesting article in which a Jewish Jungian psychoanalyst describes an unconventional method of confronting Jung's antisemitism by writing him a letter as her own grandmother: www.jstor.org/stable/10.1525/jung.2012.6.1.56?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents I think it's evident that care should be taken when applying Jungian psychoanalysis to a modern world. I think that's just what Jordan Peterson fails to do. In fact, I think Jordan Peterson is the actual subject of McGowan's book: the modern Jungian who uses Jungian psychoanalysis to perpetuate gender essentialism and Eurocentrism. I can tell that he refuses to criticize Jung (even when he should) when he states that anyone who accuses Jung of anti-semitism is "committing a cardinal sin" (If you're interested, I can try and find the video/timestamp for that proclamation, as well as the ones I mentioned in my previous comment). Peterson's constant refrain that "post-modern neo-marxists" are destroying the West is an example of his Eurocentrism; his argument that the pay gap exists because women simply prefer jobs that happen to be lower paying is an example of his gender essentialism. I would argue against throwing the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to Jung. I think he had some very interesting perspectives. However, I would argue that Peterson is largely bathwater. In the interest of maintaining the skepticism espoused by Carl Sagan, I would recommend that you look into some of the criticism of Peterson, particularly regarding the claims he makes that you find interesting. I mean, as far as neuropsychology goes, Peterson's claim that "the nervous system of the lobster and of the human being is so similar that antidepressants work on lobsters" (this is from the Cathy Newman interview) is so utterly ridiculous that I can't really give him any credibility as far as neuroscience is concerned. Lobsters don't have brains. That's how neurologically similar they are to us. The fact that they produce serotonin could be used to argue that they have as much in common with plants (www.news-medical.net/health/Serotonin-in-Plants.aspx) as they do with humans. Antidepressants don't "work" on lobster the same way the do on humans. They regulate serotonin reuptake in both, but the effects are incomparable. Lobsters don't have limbic systems. They don't have cortices. They literally *don't have brains*. The behavioral effects of SSRI's on lobsters are galaxies apart from their effects on humans. I would also say that Peterson's claims about myths tend to be prescriptive, whereas a more thoughtful Jungian might only make descriptive claims. I think Peterson encourages his readers to live according to mythical archetypes, but I think it would be more appropriate simply to observe that mythical archetypes seem to align with human behavior throughout history, without going on to advise others on what they ought to do. I know about Peterson's credentials, and I can only guess that he was seduced by his own ideology to go so far outside of his expertise, and even to misrepresent ideas that he should be an expert on. All I can say is that he seems to be rather successful in presenting himself as an intellectual while actually saying some pretty ridiculous things, and I recommend that anyone interested in his work remain wary of *everything* he says.

@@hallmark1 hey no worries man. You're right that I was projecting. I had a couple of friends who were young men with legitimate questions and they got sucked into Peterson's trash and it really didn't help them. One of them ended up basically an alt-right white supremacist after a year's worth of KZbin suggestions autoplaying after his Peterson videos. I just wanted to warn the guy about it, but my anger and sadness about my personal experiences did come out in my comment, so I apologize for that. I very much appreciated that he replied to me and I apologized in my own reply. I'm glad that he seems not to have fallen for Peterson hook line and sinker. But I was also a little worried that his viewers would, and I hoped that some of them might come across my refutation of Peterson and maybe keep it in mind if they decided to look him up after watching this video. I'm very sorry if I was too harsh and offended you or the video creator. I just didn't want anyone to fall for the same crap as my friends and end up with the same harmful and inaccurate notions that Peterson has espoused.

I think you need to broaden your views a bit, as I think Jordan Peterson has spent decades broadening his. And no, this is not about politics. It's about psychology. I don't agree with plenty of what Jordan Peterson says, but it's incredibly interesting to hear his perspectives on psychoanalysis, and the truths hidden in myths. His insight into psychology has helped me a lot with my own crippling anxiety and severe depression that I live with every day, and have for almost a decade at this point. Ignore the politics, and maybe you might learn something about the mind, and maybe something about yourself. I know I did by watching essentially Junior/Senior level psychology courses on his channel. He's mostly not about politics. He just wants to help people in what ways he kows how. If you only focus on his politics, then, if your views don't align with his, I can see why you might find him distasteful, but in reality, he's nice guy looking to spread what he has learned as far and wise as he can and to help as many people as possible by doing so.
