Oslo City Hall was opened in 1950 and is open to everyone. In the Town Hall Tower you will find the Nordics' largest carillon, and in the Munchrommet you can get married. The town hall is also the seat of the city's city council and city council.
On December 10 (anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death) each year, Oslo City Hall hosts the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in which the annual laureate gives his or her lecture and is awarded the medal and diploma. A podium for the laureate and the Nobel Committee is erected in the far end of the hall for each ceremony. The Norwegian Royal Family and Prime Minister are attendants.
The royal palace is located on Bellevue hill, at the end of Karl Johan - Oslo's main street. The castle is one of the country's most important single buildings, and an important symbol of Norwegian history after 1814. Construction work began in 1824, and it was King Carl Johan who laid the foundation stone on 1 October 1825. The castle was inaugurated by King Oscar I on 26 July 1849.
The royal castle is owned by the state and is made available to the country's head of state. It is the residence and workplace for the Royal Family. Here His Majesty the King holds cabinet meetings, receives audience seekers and holds official dinners. Many foreign heads of state who come to Oslo on state visits stay at the Palace. Most of the employees at the Royal Court have their daily workplace here.
