Osmotherley stands on slightly elevated ground on the western edge of the North York Moors. To the north rise the whaleback Cleveland Hills, while to the south are the softer Hambleton Hills. It's now a popular walking centre for hikers on the Cleveland Way National Trail or Lyke Wake Walk, but many of the cottages were originally built in the early 19th century to house the growing number of workers in the local quarries and textile industry.
