It's also something you can drink before you wreck your car, bet your friend $200 you can make the next three shots while playing pool, yell "where's the nearest donut shop?" at a police officer, cheat on your wife, or, fall asleep at a table at the Waffle House. So, really, it's got a variety of uses.

@@galenoestrike945 Totally agreed. The worst thing you can do to good bourbon is kill the taste with water/ice. Though I have gotten some funny looks ordering barrel strength neat. Too many people equate "neat" with doing shots.

The higher proof showcases more of the grain and wood tannins so yes the higher the proof the better it tastes. However the flip side of that is adding a drop or two of water to a barrel proof whiskey separates out some of the oils which would be from near the tails cut and the char of the barrel and brings out intense character. It can be good or bad depending on the whiskey.

When my grandfather was alive, he would often get samplers of all sorts of liquor: bourbon, whiskey, rum, vodka. He would have a briefcase full of these samplers, and he would just give them all away to people he knew: Friends, family, even cashiers that he saw regularly. When he passed, we had tray full of those samplers next to his casket with a sign that said “Have one on Chuck.” Seeing this video kind of reminded me of that story.

Though it's humorous, it's also spot on. Whiskey has thousands of compounds in it and each person will pick up different smells and tastes from the same whiskey. And since cherries don't have a "cherry odor chemical" that makes them smell like cherries, but instead have a combination of chemicals that gives them a typical cherry smell, if those compounds or ones similar to it show up in whiskey, it will remind the taster of cherries. The other weird thing is the perception of like odors and flavors. If a beer has a skunky odor, some will absolutely gag over it while others will enjoy it because it reminds them of the smell of the woods at the lake when they were a kid.

Actually, bourbon is not fermented within the final aging barrel. It is fermented within a different barrel, distilled, then aged within a charred oak barrel. Fun fact, every batch of bourbon has to be made with a freshly charred barrel, as barrels cannot be reused. This is where the very high amounts of oak flavor come from. Also, bourbon is more like the Soju of America. The Makgeolli of America is more like Napa valley wine.

_Actually_ there is no fermentation inside a barrel. All fermentation is done before distilling. Once the fermentation is deemed completed the liquid is heated to the point that the alcohol (and some other important chemicals) evaporate and these gases are passed through (often) a metal coiled tube, condensing back into a liquid. This liquid may be additionally distilled for additional purification or use directly for maximum impurities and flavor. Some alcohols are distilled multiple times, such as Irish whisky and vodka, while others pride themselves on the flavor of the distilled source and are only distilled once. A prime example of the once-distilled beverage is Shouchu and Soju. These have a pronounced difference in flavor depending on the source of the initial fermented source. (Unfortunately in the US outside of the East and West Coast is it quite difficult to find a variety of either Shouchu or Soju. I would really like to try one that is majority Sweet Potato based.)

"I feel alive!" 😂 There's a Bourbon drinker for you. I actually do like Jim Beam, but I don't like Jack Daniels. Personal taste I guess. The Jim Beam distillery is only a few miles away from me, so that might be an influence. When I first moved to Korea I tried makgeolli and it was afwul. But I soon discovered that what I had tried was the cheapest junk on the market. I tried good makgeolli about a year later, and it was quite good. But it was unfair to tell these people that Bourbon is the makgeolli of the US, since they expected it to be smooth. Bourbon has a burn that does take some getting used to.

Buffalo Trace is a good one to start with, it's light, more aromatic and some defined sweetness. As they go up to pricier bourbon's, then they can begin to understand the complexity of each. Woodford and the Woodford reserve are the 2 others I've tried. Jack Daniels is harsh, I've tried that several times. The Bulleit Bourbon has a higher amount of rye in it's mash, which can make it more spicy or 'medicine' for some tastes

@@acolytetojippity Bulleit is the best cheap bourbon there is. Buffalo Trace is generally considered one of the best. Jim Beam and Jack Daniels (even though it isn't technically a bourbon) are household names. Their choices seem to make some sense. There are a myriad of bourbons out there. It's impossible to make a well defined choice. Plus, you don't know what they have available to them in S. Korea. If they had all day and a good liver, they could have definitely expanded a little bit. Knob Creek (although I like it), wouldn't really be my first choice since it is basically just Jim Beam aged longer. I probably would have gone with Blantons, Woodford and Makers.

Great that they had Buffalo Trace in the line up. Considering the outrageous whiskey prices in Korea, that bottle costed between 60-80,000 won. Beam and Jack was probably 35-50,000 each, and the Bulliet Burbon was probably 40-50,000 won. Overall, great episode!

Sorry kids, but I'm from Kentucky and that James Beam is mid to bottom shelf bourbon. Kind of like Evan Williams green label. Get yourself some Four Roses, Heaven Hill, or even better stuff. Ezra Brooks or Basil Hayden's (which I find wonderful). It's a lot smoother and more friendly to being sipped. Another surprisingly inexpensive but good bourbon is Very Old Barton. Other whiskeys are also good. Certain grades of Old Elk will set you back $80 USD to close to $180 USD, but it's like sipping bourbon flavored Koolaid. So smooth it sneaks up on you then all of a sudden you can't stand up from your chair.

The reason the Buffalo Trace was different is because its a 'Wheated' Bourbon..its finished with Wheat rather than the typical Rye so usually has softer notes and is generally considered to have a smoother finish.
@carlbeaver7112

She was right thinking water would smooth it. 'Bourbon & branch' (water) used to be a common drink for that reason. Now many people order a bourbon on the rocks (ice) knowing it takes time to 'steep', in other words, for the ice to melt and provide the small amount of water necessary to adjust the flavor to their preference. Also, a lot of new bourbon drinkers prefer it in mixed drinks, the simplest would be the Bulleit with a splash of Coke - they really work well together.

Thank you for the laughs this morning! Hard alcohol like bourbon is a rough go to the uninitiated. I love hearing the Kingsmen reference. Fifteen minutes into Golden Circle I wanted to gave a glass of bourbon to nurse until the end of the movie, although the movie did turn me off of hamburgers. It was also interesting how some people can pick out the nuanced differences between bourbons and some can't. I found I fall into that latter group. I'll drink Evan Williams, a very inexpensive bourbon once or twice a year. I've also had Buffalo Trace (my one sister's favorite) and Bulleit (my brother's favorite) and I couldn't pick up the smoothness both siblings found in their favorite bourbons. Thank you for a very enjoyable video.
