From a child and up to the present, seed shrimp have always been a joy to have. I am now proud to say that I am successfully culturing them now. This video goes over the basic information on them. Another video will go over on how I culture them.

Really cool video! I study fossil ostracods and thus I don't get in contact with the living ones that much, so it's really cool to see footage of them running around in an aquarium haha A fun thing about ostracods is that they live in every type of water, so you could also have ostracods in salt water tanks! Many of the salt water species have really elaborate and beautiful carapaces. I wonder how difficult to keep a salt water ostracod tank would be...

That is really cool work you do. Are the fossil ones also relatively small? It would be awesome to see some saltwater ones. Considering how hardy they are compared to fish and shrimp I would assume they are probably easy to keep. Marine organisms are so fascinating. I have been dabbling in saltwater. Half the fun is finding a new creature pop up and figure out what it is.

@@Guppy_Girl fossil ones have as much size variety as modern ones, so they range from absolutely tiny to pretty big (for an ostracod, haha). I've recovered fossils as small as 0.2 mm to as "large" as 3 mm. Nothing compared to the largest living ostracods (genus Gigantocypris, raches 3 cm in size!), tho! Tho tbf, the largest ostracods are the planktonic ones, and those don't fossilize well because their carapaces are thinner. I can imagine! My father used to have a big salt water aquarium and sometimes some hitchhikers would show up haha, it was always interesting (if not always good for the fish) If you ever get some marine ostracods I hope you give an update about it!

@@marcosa.6054 hello guys, iam ostracod breeder from Slovakia. there is interesting kind from centrar / south America ,,Chlamydotheca,, which is about 1 cm big and living in brackish water. Slovak ostracod specialist dr. Pipik had them from Germany as I remember. I would like to have them too 🙂

I've been eagerly awaiting this vlog about Ostrocods, especially since I recently found them in my empty tank, which only had aquatic plants. I noticed they were attaching themselves to the bottom of the small tank.

Thank you for this video and all the helpful information. I’m starting to get into ostracods because I’m starting a bunch of jarrariums and like seeing them swim around in there! Pretty fascinating creatures! 😁

Super cool video! I am experimenting with releasing seed shrimp into my 20 gallon heavily planted tank to control algae growth. I have tetra, a bottom feeder, and a cichlid in there so I’m hoping they will also provide snacks for the fish. We’ll see if they survive long enough to also be cleaners.

Interesting. I use a lot of ostracods in my aquaria as food. The most suitable fish species which have the necessary feeding apparatus to handle these are dwarf to medium-sized cichlids, medium to large-sized tetras, Corydoras catfish and pea puffers. The latter especially, they love them. The juvenile instars are small enough (

I suddenly got a boom of them last week. There's only 1 guppy in there. They started making holes in one of my plants and I had to syphon a lot of them. From experience fish don't eat them cause they're so hard. I tried feeding them to my betta and guppy and they just spit them back out.

i have something similar in my guppy bucket. before I put the gupppies in it was just plants and garden soil. When I checked it after a week or so if setting up I had random snails and a bunch of these dot like insects. once I added my guppies in 6 of them to be exact I saw them trying to eat them but they just swallow and then spit them out. It's so funny after that these insects free fall for a second and then zoom off to hide. Now they hide in the coconut husk on which I have a pothos on. I have no idea where I got the assorted snails from tho. I have three and all are completely different.XD all though I did see too of them trying to attack or mate?? I have no idea lol. Its all rather fun. I also tried moving them to a tank which had tiger barbs, and those little rascals are so greedy they tried eating a whole guppy!! One of them was trying to stuff a whole guppy in its tiny mouth but fortunately gave up and spit him out. The poor guppy's tail was gone and his spine bent from the barbs unsuccessful attempt at an ecosystem but he is fine now.

Being from poop of mammals don’t confuse giardia with seed shrimp. Giardia if ingested will give you the worse diarrhea. Just know there are other one cell creatures that can make you sick. It is a Protozoa. Just wanted to point out since the water you collected had cat poop. Yours was more then likely what you said, just pointing out not every tiny creature is harmless. Very interesting, loved learning! I have shrimp so I heard different things on them especially with baby shrimp. So are they safe with baby shrimp?
@Guppy_Girl

Thank you for your concern, I looked up pictures of giardia to familiarize myself with them. These seed shrimp were collected from my tanks, most likely hitchhikers on plants. Not the same ones I collected from the cat poop ditch. 😂 I should have clarified the water is that color from wood tannins not poop. I’m glad you liked the video.

I haven’t noticed anything bad happen when having them with shrimplets. The only issue I can think of is they compete for the same food source as shrimplets, so having a very large amount of them can prevent shrimplets from getting enough food.

So that is your suggested best predator for a small cherry shrimp tank.
@Guppy_Girl
@Guppy_Girl 5 ай бұрын
The ostracods themselves are scavengers. Unfortunately any predator that would pick off ostracods would also eat shrimplets too. If there is a large amount of them in a shrimp tank it's a good indicator that the tank is being over feed. With less food the ostracod population will go down naturally.

I've heard a lot of people say this, so I did an experiment where I grew out newly hatched shrimplets in my scud jar-aquarium. It looked like they all reached adulthood but I didn't count how many I put in the jar. I would like to recreate the experiment and record the results.

I just find this channel, its great... Congrats!! I recomend you look for the ecosphere concept (I recomend life in jars, jartopia channels) keeping small crawlers (or swimmers 🤭🤭) are perfect for this concept...

I don't like them, particularly in my shrimp tanks. They breed too fast and if the population gets to high I think they lead to unhappy shrimp and snails.

Same, hate the things. I have a massive explosion of them in my cherry shrimp only tank. All the fish I added, scared my cherry shrimp, and they didn’t even eat the seed shrimp! Tried guppies, neons, leopard danios & CPDs. I think I’m going to have to start a new shrimp tank, however, I don’t know how I’m going to net out the shrimp, without seed shrimp tagging along. There are just so many, it’s going to be impossible to avoid. My shrimp just dropped babies too 😢 maybe a bare bottom tank might have to be the solution 🤷‍♀️
