This is one of the truest, most outright videos I've seen on here that actively tries to bring attention to situations like this. Thank you. I also have a story to tell... if you like story comments, go ahead! Otherwise, great video (and art... 💀) I have been playing osu since April 2022 and am around the game's age myself (therefore, I still attend school). I first picked the game up after seeing a few videos of it on YT, and from what I saw it looked pretty harmless. Upon starting to play, there wasn't immediately anything eye-catching about it other than the occasional anime-like backgrounds on some songs. Because I came to osu from FNF (and given the standard two mania songs), I had to go to the website to get more mania maps. This is when things started going downhill - most of the backgrounds for recently ranked mania maps were, in my opinion at the time, unnecessary. However, I was still eager to get into the osu!mania experience, and so I went ahead and downloaded whatever songs looked good. The ones that seemed both easy and innocent. Fast forward a couple months, it's now summer of 2022. You might be able to tell where this is going. I didn't know at the time that there was an option to disable the seasonal backgrounds, but I was smart enough to at least dim the song backgrounds completely. Despite all that, I was still "into" osu and could reasonably ignore whatever things I didn't need to see too much of - after all, I came to osu for the gameplay. Around August 2022 (when school started for me) I realized I was going to have some conflicts. I couldn't resist pulling out the computer in class, and because it was still considered summer, I had to constantly keep my brightness low, which worsened my progression. Some of the real trouble came around November, when a few of my friends dared me to ask to play on the class projector. Surprisingly, the teacher whose class we were in accepted and allowed me to demonstrate the skill I had gained, in front of the whole class. When time came, there was one problem. I'd had many more anime backgrounds than before at the time, with only a few that I would (then and now) deem acceptable for showing a whole class. I got lucky with osu's autoplay that time around, and proceeded to record a video of what I had done in class that day. A few weeks later, the same thing. I went to the teacher and asked for another, possibly longer session of what I had done before, and with some scheduling, we managed to get another day in before semester exams rolled around. This time, I had a trick up my sleeve. *In the game's title screen, you can go to the "now playing" section and choose from there what song you want, and from that the map that you are led to.* I was able to avoid any bad luck the second time around, and got another recording of me playing osu!mania for class. After finals came, I had to drop the gaming and actually study, and it took me months to get back into it. As of now (1/15/2024), I am back into osu, and have not gotten walked in on with anything too suspicious on-screen. I found a skin that doesn't have any "extra art" in it, and more of my choice maps are actually decent in terms of showing others.

I showed my little cousin osu! (he is 11) he found the game fun to play so I was very happy to finally have found a fellow osu enjoyer. After playing for a while I had to go to my mom for something and I left him alone for a minute to play osu! and when I came back I saw him staring at albedo from voracity mapset and I just stood behind him for minutes to confirm what he was doing and he was staring daggers at her soon his sister who is my elder cousin walked in and I got a beating of a lifetime for humiliating my family in a family dinner (I am asian). Quick tip for yall - whenever you hear someone come in and you don't want osu on your screen - press "insert" It instantly closes the game, but you can still access it in the taskbar on the bottom right whenever you're safe again lol Thank me later

This also reminded me of Halloween 2022 where an artwork was banned for being "too scary" to qualify because of how the face looked. I don't know why they banned this when a decent amount of the submissions that win these contents show more skin than needed. I'm one of the few lucky people who, don't care what other see what art I look at, and have a family who also don't care what art I look at. I see younger people mentioned a lot here, but I can tell you this goes the other way too. As a mid 30s guy, I'm embarassed by even the thought of showing the game to friends coming over, exactly because of all the sexualized backgrounds. I wish there was more moderation of backgrounds, or some way to toggle not showing NSFW backgrounds, and keeping the rest visible. Even requiring SFW alternative backgrounds would be a welcome change to the game.

i just disable seasonal BG's and have a collection of maps with perfectly normal backgrounds to make sure i dont get questioned, that's if i hear footsteps or if someone knocks. song select is very true, my dad was right behind me and thank god i was on Uta which isnt nearly as questionable as despacito or rockefeller street. i use whitecat's old V2 skin mostly because its clean gameplay but also because it passes the parents walking in test.

osu!cleaner has an option to delete all beatmap backgrounds. I occasionally will do this (as well as deleting the maps from other gamemodes I don't play) and it actually frees up a lot of space... Also then you don't have to look at the fullscreen image of some of these sus anime girl pics (you will still see the thumbnails in the song select, but that background will be blank)

When I first installed osu! I got plastered with the beach backgrounds, yet I wasn't effected by it. I'm not an advid anime viewer (I do understand that a beach episode is meant for fanservice and I get that's what the event was basically nodding at). I enjoy seasonal backgrounds as they remove the bland atmosphere of the screen. Not because I was a cum demon, my brain shuts off any idea of attraction at all knowing that the character on the other end is most likely 15-16 lol.

this is kind of a subpart of my problem with osu!. Ive always seen osu as a perfect game due to the right amount of simplicity to play. Not being as simple as mania for example (which i also still find fun) but not as complex as for example multiplayer games, which contain a lot more random factors to possibly ruin your fun. This is is why ive always found it quite annoying how its catered towards 'anime fans' for no particualr reason. Other than the fact that it's baed on a japanese rhythm game and that rhythm games are maybe most popular in asia or something? idk. But I feel like it should be more catered towards the simplicity and competitive aspects of the game. This would result in a broader playerbase, a more diverse mappool and make it less stigmatised. btw I like anime, and understand that game needs a theme. But at least try to not stray away from a broad accesibility.

Honestly the backgrounds were the reason I avoided the game for several years, I was afraid of having people think I’m weird for playing it.
