When a BEMANI artist composes a song, it’s usually specifically made for the game (i.e. 2 min long) at first, so they are not really shortening the full ver, but rather the opposite

2:30 of length seems like a reasonable one for me at least, in this time the song can build up for quite a long time and then have a drop which could be like 1 minute long. (English songs only) 1:30 is so short time that the build-up or the "1-2 spam before kiai" is just a few seconds and it's not satisfying in most cases. But well, I tend to enjoy longer stuff so that's just my opinion.

Tbh I think the biggest reason why we have so many short maps is that mapping even 1 diff of a 5 minute+ song is really hard, especially compared to the standards we're may or max not expected to live up to nowadays. Spreads are a bit easier for me personally though at 2~4 minutes most mappers who aren't used to making spreads have almost no incentive to create something this long

Even if you are a little experienced as a mapper, I don't see a problem in mapping 5+ minutes long songs. At the most it can take around 5 to 6 hours if you actually put your mind to it. Personally I prefer to refine that 5 minutes long song than make a full spread.

I don't really agree with that, I think a large majority of mappers won't even be close to make anything good that long in 5 - 6 hours for me personally it can take up to multiple weeks to even finish something like that and I know multiple people who take similarly long. I think the only exception might be newer mappers that don't follow as many qualitative restrictions. I think the effort to make a 5 minute diff or even set can be worth it though, but not as many people want to necessarily do that as of right now

There are some 5 minutes+ long maps with full spread, so those mappers deserve way more appreciation. That kind of thing should be promoted. As for the length of making a long map, as long as you don't over-complicate for yourself and are more or less experienced then I don't see a reason why it would take a few weeks.

CircleNoob yea I think people should be given more credit for it (although they already do to some degree) and I encourage you to try and rank a 5 minute spread where you didn't take longer than a day to make each diff, rank it and receive critical praise for it. To be clear I think we both agree that longer maps have a lot of value, but it's unreasonable imo to suggest they aren't a commitment

tv.size maps with dt are like 45 to 60 seconds lol, if you not fail on 3 minutes you could play around 4 maps and if you farm pp thats lot on 10 minutes

Most of my top plays are about 3 minutes or longer, so I guess PP-wise, I prefer longer maps. I can't really play DT very well, so I rely mostly on consistency for my pp.

I prefer longer maps starting from the 4 minutes length because they immerse me more than shorter songs. It's especially true for marathons which sort of get you into a relaxed mood after a while. TV sizes maps are often more intense and jumpy, which has the opposite effect. I guess your preference once again depends on why you play the game and how much you value PP.

As a more casual player, I find full-length songs to be much better in terms of impact and enjoyment from the map. In theory it could become boring, but with all the options available to mappers, it's very possible to change it up. You can change the position on the map, or, heck, replace beats with sliders/sliders with beats to make the timings feel different. For my experience, if I'm looking for a particular song, I want to be able to experience the full length while playing Osu!, while if I'm just looking for songs to enjoy, it's just a lot harder to sell me on something with a short version. The part that I actually mind about the imbalance is that many songs often never get full-length beatmaps, yet they still get hundreds of TV-length ones.

you forgot to mention pp as a potential factor. While usually people overstate the influence of pp, you neglected to mention it at all. TV size is around the right length to not be too short to give less pp, but short enough to retry spam comfortably. Side note, it also counters nerves which are detrimental to many players, more and more so the longer a map is (typically) It has some non-zero impact, but this kinda stuff is impossible to even attempt to quantify
