I assume it has less to do with self esteem and more to do with female selectivity. Human heterosexuality is a game of supply and demand where men compete & women select. It makes sense that women might subconsciously choose attached men (especially online) because an attached man has already proven his value as a mate. Single men are an unknown commodity, a risk!

You did not understand my post. I didn't say women selected attached men because attached men 'were' better but that women 'might subconsciously' select attached men 'especially online' because -these men having already been selected- reduced the chances that they were social misfits or economically challenged. It seems much more likely that this is a subconscious version of 'hedging your bets' than it is to do with self esteem.

The answer lies in sociobiology, humans evolved very recently from a dominance hierarchy based mating system where alpha males had many or most of the available females. While socially we have modified our parental roles to accommodate for longer childhoods, the underlying instincts still exist.

This finding is not surprising at all; it's yet another finding that debunks the notion of "male privilege" and supports the old adage that the nice guy invariably finishes last (or, in this case, is perpetually single).

The problem with single guys is that a break up or perpetual failure with the opposite sex will only increase his insecurity, which women are incredibly good at sniffing out.

Yeah. She generalized way too much given her sample. I think she would have to replicate that study across different age groups and settings to generalize it to all women.

Females are attracted to alpha males, alpha status is exhibited in group settings, a woman will be most attracted to first; the man in the room that most of the other women also find attractive and second; the man in the room who garners the most respect from the other males in the room. These markers of dominance not only effect the females attraction level but will also boost his own testosterone production which in turn makes him more attractive to females.
