Oswego River Salmon Fishing

The Oswego River boasts one of the best urban salmon runs in the Great Lakes. Each fall tens of thousands of salmon migrate out of Lake Ontario and into city limits where they are greeted by hundreds of anglers. Save your money up and at least once in your lifetime salmon fish up in Alaska. I did that in '94. I fished a river system near the mouth of the Cook inlet. We were catching Coho's, bright silver with sea lice on them. Great eating and when the run comes in you limit out in no time. I fished a #5 Mepps Spinner and the fish gobbled them up, very few foul hooked. I've been up in this area fishing, did ok, but nothing beats bright silver salmon fresh from the sea.

You can get em bright and silver out in Lake Ontario at 150-200 ft depth during the Summer months. Lots of fresh Steelhead, Kings, and Trout in the Lake for filling your freezer.

I've been fishing from Oswego down into the finger lakes and WNY regions since I was a young kid (in the 80s), so it's awesome to see these local places get some broader attention. Though I have never been into angling salmon on the run when they're spawning (I've always fished them in the deeper water in Lake Ontario), if angling spawning salmon is your thing, upstate NY and the many tributaries off of Ontario and Erie are some of the best in the world. It's amazing how many salmon programmatically run these tributaries every Fall, quite a sight. There's definitely some mystery surrounding why these salmon still bite on eggs considering they're not feeding any more...to this day it's not fully understood (other than salmon just being aggressive) why they bite on various baits when they're in spawn mode.
