Worth noting with Pell, the manga chapter where he "sacrificed"himself was released November 2001, two months after the 9/11 terrorism act. I find it plausible Oda originally intended for Pell to die and changed it after the real life terrorism attack shocked the world. That said, The Dark Knight Rises rips off the whole bomb scenario pretyy much beat-for-beat.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the editors thought that it would be insensitive for someone to die of a bombing at that time. So they probably discouraged it and had it changed to him surviving it.

Listen, there's literally no proof from this apart from some random forum posts speculating the same thing. I know it seems to line up but you really don't need to jump through so many hoops to justify Oda's consistent fake out deaths. This 9/11 myth, while compelling, has literally never even been hinted at by oda as being the reason why pell survived.

The first time when I read this part 18 years ago.. I cried man. To show the symbol at the middle and showing it again at the end was so satisfying. Vivi will always be a nakama. One day boys.. she’ll be the most important in the story.. with how the pacing that you guys are at. You’ll get there just on time for the big reveals one day.

the reason Pel didnt die is because at around the same time his "death" happened, 9/11 attack also happened and oda felt it was too similar in a way and so kept Pel alive after as a kind of commemoration

A popular thought why pell is alive is that the chapter came out close to 9/11 which made international news, so Oda thought it was bad taste to kill off a character in the same manner. Could be wrong but dont think about it too much

No that is true. His main editor told oda to change pell's death because of 9/11. Pell was written to die but they forced oda to change it. Oda admitted it as well

I think everyone wanted Pell to stay dead. However, with sept 11th 2001 in mind things were changed. But it makes sense as well. Think back to Dalton. My dude was massacred, buried under snow for an exorbitant amount of time, and still came back. Chopper was brutalized by his fam and still survived. Zoan type devil fruit users got defense/recovery buffs. They are able to be defeated but almost impossible to destroy.

Just to let you know and anybody else wondering why Pell didn’t die to the bomb in Alabasta. It was during the 9/11 attack and with lots of controversy surrounding the subject Oda decided to have Pell live. But originally Pell is suppose to die and I kinda have him die in my mind because that’s the event Oda wanted to create but couldn’t.

Hot take. Pell is a real one. He survived an explosion he had every intention of dying to. He had no reason to think he would live.That's just how tough Zoan types are. Luffy himself got stabbed straight through by a hook. People survive way more devastating things in this series.

A lot of people tend to dismiss them as meaningless "filler", but they add continuity between major arcs, even more world building, flesh out character dynamics. Basically, they fit so well that they're "canon" in my eyes.
