Join us on the 5th installment of the Third Man Factor's Otehake Hot Springs mission in immersive 3D, as we tackle the route into one of the best hot spring locations in the South Island of New Zealand. Experience remote mountainous forests, lakes, rivers, gorges and everything in between during the formidable task to reach X marks the spot, a highly valued jewel within Arthur's Pass National Park.
On the 5th leg of the Otehake Hot Springs mission, we back track along Lake Kaurapataka and up a short side stream as a shortcut to the main track. Continuing along we walk though untouched lake side forest navigating around some large Red Beech trees, one of which is by far the largest we know of. A small inlet spells the end of easy terrain as we embarque the very rooty undulating path towards the lake end and connection to Otehake Valley. As we wind our way through scrappy bush full of young Rimu we encounter a few picturesque inlets, the last of which needing to be navigated with both arms and legs to sidle the steep sides. With this technical section completed we finally arrive at the Otehake Valley junction with a choice. On the right is the Flood Track route with its sign aptly changed to ‘Blood Track’. But we choose to take the more preferred left Gorge Route up the Otehake River as we are suspecting the river is in favourable flows, essential to ford the multiple river crossings coming up. Getting down to the river takes us through a very steep section showing just how elevated Lake Kaurapataka is compared to Otehake River. Emerging from this dark and damp valley we finally get our first look at the pristine river as we walk along its rocky banks to a preconceived rest point. Here we get our first whiffs of sulfur in the air, signalling the start of the penultimate section and the feeling that the prize is in reach.
Otehake Hot Springs is special. Located in the Otehake River, it is a perfect example of a classic South Island hot spring, and our favourite. With the formation of the Southern Alps/Kā Tiritiri o te Moana, by the Pacific and Tasman plates slamming into each other, a unique type of hot spring is created. These, usually alpine, hot springs are amazing, heat has managed to snake all it's way to the surface and warm clean and pure water. Usually positioned in or next to a river, these rare spots are usually needing to be manipulated to make a pool fit for soaking in. Jets of super hot water mixed with just the right amount of frigid river water. In the unforgiving environment of the mountains of New Zealand, laying submerged in water is usually a death sentence, and also in this instance another inhospitable environment just centimeters below you which is the exact opposite. A sharp line of comfort between two deathly extremes makes for a bizarre experience, but after a hard days hiking, you just can't beat bathing in the sublime, rejuvenating, hot water of an alpine hot spring.
