I would be careful to just say "Shakespeare is misogynistic and the time was misogynistic" as if that explains everything. I even think that Shakespeare cleverly commentates on women's roles in society. I think there are many people in the audience who could be angry at Emilia because she didn't step in sooner. Shouldn't she have noticed that her husband was up to no good? But what can she essentially do? A wife had to be obidient. If she wasn't, her husband could punish her or divorce her. And what options are there for a divorced wife in Elizabethan society? She could go back to her family, sure, but would the situation be better for her there? On the other hand, she could become homeless and would have to sell her body in order to survive if she can't find another husband. But let's be real here, what established Elizabethan gentleman in his right mind would want a divorced woman as his wife? Surely he must be curious as to why she was divorced. And as far as I know historical accounts of male-female relationships, a man would surely think that a woman was damaged goods if another man touched her before him. We all know about marital duties. This woman is not pure anymore. And we love em pure and obedient.
