I grew up on that cheesy show too and yes, the Earth Star-fighter (and Erin Grey) were the best things about that show. I had read somewhere that they originally intended to use that ship concept for BSG TOS...

The Buck Rogers star fighter was also sold in the mid 80s as a "stealth" fighter at KB Toys in the US. Everyone had heard the term, but no one knew what it looked like yet, so I guess they were trying to take advantage of the hype.

Wonderful models. The "three legged" support was attempted by George Pal in the original WOTW movie. In the first scenes of the ships rising from the ground you can see three "beams" of light emanating from the bottom. But, this effect proved to be too costly and time consuming to produce, so it was abandoned for the rest of the film. On the bottom of your model, you can even see the three indentations where this effect was to take place. It was a terrific and groundbreaking movie non the less! Nice work!
@InterstellarModeler10 жыл бұрын
Interesting...yes i do remember seeing those beams of light in the one of the very first scenes involving the war machines. I also noticed that the sound effects used for the weapons that fired the wing tips are the same as the photon torpedo sounds that Trek TOS used many years later. The original is definitely one of my favorites. Thanks for watching.

One correction, the Starfighter was produced by Monogram not MPC.
@stevethefishdotnet10 жыл бұрын
Here in Japan, a now-defunct model company named Tsukuda had released the Monogram Buck Rogers Starfighter. These kits are easier to come by than the original Monogram models, perhaps because the TV show was not well-known here as it was elsewhere.
@InterstellarModeler10 жыл бұрын
stevethefishdotnet Interesting. I've not heard of that company. The starfighter is such a great design and there are many modelers out there who remember this show from the 80's. It's too bad no one has re-released this kit. No doubt they would sell. Thanks for watching

Interstellar Modeler Yes, I was very surprised when I found a Buck Rogers Starfighter kit in a toy shop in Tokyo for only 4,000 yen ($40US). It was in very good condition, the decals were still fine, and only some light wear on the box. Then a year later I bought another one for only 3,000 yen at another store.
@InterstellarModeler10 жыл бұрын
stevethefishdotnet Fantastic. BTW you can also find decals for the ship at Federationmodels.com. And if you look on Ebay under starfighter pilot, you can still find a pilot figure made for the Monogram starfighter...cheap too.

Interstellar Modeler Yes, I've seen the starfighter pilot. I assume it's the same one you have in yours. I can't tell from your video, but is the pilot looking to far up? My friend bought this, and he said that the pilot is looking up at the ceiling of the starfighter and not straight ahead.

I think there is also a "four seater" in some episodes("Vegas in Space") I liked Hawk's fighter too. Despite the ridiculously "disco" theme everywhere in the galaxy, I still loved that show, especially season Two. nice engine burns, I remember "Planet of the Slave Girls" where Buck and his cohort(who is a real asshole) crash in the desert and become pals, the engines and front spires look really good when beaten up in a crash, also during what they, on the show, refer to as "trans-velocity" going vertical planetside. The flight engines overheat and go black.

A little known fact about the Buck Rodgers Starfighter is that it was originally designed as The Colonial Viper for the original Battlestar Galactica, it was rejected in favour of the Viper we all know today. It was then recycled and renamed for Buck Rodgers. It has in the past two or three years been reintroduced to Battlestar Galactica as the Kobolian Taipan fighter in the Video Game Battlestar Galactica Deadlock. 😎

@@InterstellarModeler Yes, one of my (too many) hobbies is high power rocketry. I often work with youth (TARC, Scouts, Civil Air Patrol, etc.) teaching a bit of physics as we build and fly small model rockets. Wings vs. fins always comes up ... and I guess the good part is that I then get to teach the difference between them as part of the program. :-)

Hi, I bought the Buck Rogers Starfighter pilot figure a few months ago on eBay after watching this video. A friend of mine told me that the pilot's head scrapes against the inside of the cockpit canopy. Is that true with yours?
@InterstellarModeler9 жыл бұрын
stevethefishdotnet Yes that's right so I had to sand down his butt to make him fit into the cockpit better. It was a considerable amount too. Just do it little by little and keep at it until he fits. And don't worry that his behind looks funny afterwards, he's seated and no one will see it anyway. Thanks for watching.
@stevethefishdotnet9 жыл бұрын
Interstellar Modeler OK, thanks. My friend is a sculptor and he'd offered to rework the figure for me, but if all it takes is sanding, even I can do that. He said that the pilot's head looks up and not forward enough. I'm not sure about that, but I can live with it if that's the case. (I'm currently on vacation and away from my stuff.) The same guy who made this pilot also made some improved pilot figures for the old MPC/AMT Snowspeeder.
