Otis, you've got it wrong. Paycheck's former manager, Glenn Ferguson paid for the funeral. Jones donated the burial plot. I know because Glenn Ferguson was my father. Check the record at Woodlawn Funeral Home if you doubt me.

@@otisgibbs No problem, Otis. My dad managed Paycheck '72-'79. They didn't part on good terms but John reached out to my father while he was in prison in Ohio. My favorite memory of George Jones is when he played a local fair during the mid-70's. It was an early evening show..outdoors...and he got everyone of us up and dancing . "Almost Persuaded" was sung with emotion and inflection of voice as only George Jones could and my wife and I still remember that dance. It was simply one of those amazing late Summer evenings when it seemed life would go on forever. Thank you Otis for showing respect for one of country music's greatest legends.

"He Stopped Loving Her Today" was the song that got George out of debt and revived his career. Everyone thought his music career was over because of his drinking among other bad decisions he had made over the previous years but that song put him back on tract.

What a great video-I felt like I was there! Loved the "He Stopped Loving Her Today" story I hope you do some more videos in Nashville! Johnny Paycheck wow-loved him from the very beginning. "Jukebox Charlie" was just the perfect honkeytonk heartbreak song and those musicians on the session, wow!! All day long at school and with my friends it was Mamas and Papas, Byrds and Beatles (and they were great!) but when my folks got home from their upscale Dept store management jobs that they had to lose their accents for so no one would call them "okie" and find a reason not to hire them, we turned on KFOX radio and listened to the country music! Loved all of Johnny's stuff over the years but those early years were really special. Sorry about his hard times and that he had some good friends like George Jones and Tanya Tucker to help him out.

Thanks for sharing your memory of the day George passed. I was able to listen to part of his funeral live on WSM that day. It was sad to hear.

When I heard that Johnny had passed away I took my 24 track tape of the duet Paycheck and I had recorded and had a track made leaving his vocals in and removing mine and performed it, in memory of him, in a small Oregon tavern where I sang often. At the time of the release on radio I was contacted be CBN's 700 Club and they asked if Paycheck and I would perform it on the 700 Club so I asked Johnny and he said yes. Well then the board members had a meeting and called me and said that they didn't want to have us on because they were afraid of what Paycheck might say on air! Because they figured he hadn't been a Christian that long. I argued with them saying, "Do you really think that he's going to get on national television and commit carrier suicide by saying something bad?" They agreed with me but still wouldn't change their decision. So the song was never performed in public live by the two of us.
