Dickey lived right up Hwy 41 a mile from us in Osprey FL. Everytime Duane was in town visiting his Dad, Duane would play out at local spots here in SRQ area with friends. Dickey was at The Allman Betts Family Revival Show in Sarasota FL on his 80th Birthday Dec 12th 2023. He came out on stage, and yes they had a cake for him. RIP Sir.

That was a VERY touching moment, when they brought Dickey out onto the stage and he stood up to acknowledge his fans. Watching his son and Devon carrying the torch was a truly fitting end to an absolutely legendary career.

I am a straight rock and metal head... well almost any music but love the heavy stuff.... I got tickets to see Blackberry Smoke, last minute, on a whim.... I already was listening to one song from them so ... Ok... cool...My wife and I saw them live for the first time only knowing one song....We were FUKING HOOKED. I, myself was a music teacher and played in every kind of band you could imagine. Now Blackberry smoke is my all time favorite band and my wifes fav too... We now spend hours driving 2 tracks playing BlackBerry Smoke albums non stop. It's been well over a year and I still wake up with their songs rolling through my head. Sometimes all day... Charlie you guys are the best. I know you stand on the backs of giants... we all do... I think you all are just amazing and so does my wife... Don't know if you will ever see this but you all have become a huge part of our life. I am sooo jealous. I would have given almost every thing to find talent like yours... Now I get to enjoy it anyways.. Just from the outside looking in. Thank you for your beautiful voice and thanks for the beautiful music you and you band create...

Big Steve Gains fan here. Just from him joining SKynrd for only 1 and last album before the plane crash...The songs he had on that album and the guitar playing is still to this day some of my favorite playing ever. Ronnie was so right when he said there was no way that they could have held that guy back from being a huge star on his own.

Great interview, Otis. I love how you just guide things along at times, but let Charlie tell the stories. I got to meet Duane Betts as well as Pedro Arevallo when they played small venues in socal. Both are just the nicest and most humble guys you'd ever have the pleasure of meeting. Met Dickey, too, and he was as gracious as the day is long.

Hes spot on about Duane looking like his dad. Went to Arkansas to see the Allman Betts band about 7 years ago. When they came out, i did a triple take! And Barry Oakleys son was their bassist, spitting image of his dad.

Sure miss those boy's.... I saw the Allman Brothers play three times before Duane passed..... they're the reason I play guitar today.... anyone who are old enough to have seen them back then was probably influenced to learn how to play guitar.... learned every lick off of the Fillmore album back in 1971....no KZbin...just a turntable and a record player

In 1984 I got extremely lucky. My best friends band called Hunters Gold opened for Greg and Dickie during the record label dispute at a small upstate NY club called Club Manhattan in Spring Valley. I went out to Dickies bus to let him know he had 20 minutes before he went on. So we talked and just hung out and he suddenly asks me what I'm doing for the next few weeks. Seems 1 of his crew had a family emergency and was leaving the next day. So I said nothing that I know of. So I drove home gathered up some clothes and drove back to the club. I only lived about 35 minutes away. I handed my friend the keys to my car and off I went for the next 6 months. We became good friends and from then on if I was near enough to get to his show I'd show up. It broke my heart hearing of his passing because of the time I got to spend with him listening to his story about his life, his favorite songs and favorite venues. I know I'll see him,Greg and everyone else I got to meet while on the road and working at Manhattan as part of the house crew.

So glad he was able to get clean and sober. The older I get the more I dislike alcohol - it’s ruined SO many lives. Rant over this is so interesting and the 1st I’ve ever heard of Charlie. Have visited the “Big House” in Macon, GA and had a “coming to Gregg” moment, it’s wonderful, and haunted. Cool how he mentions Western swing, grew up in Tulsa, OK with the home of Western swing “Cains Ballroom” and Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys. It’s a fabulous venue for live shows.

yeah but lowell george!!!!! i joke the best things zappa left us with are his words, his mouthing of well on talk shows etc (if only hed had social media!) and in his rigid strict anti drug etc (being someone myself who just never really gets into my fellow baltimore native zappa's music so much if im honest) anyway zappa firing lowell but encouraging him to start his own band is the dempetive gift he gace us in little feat with lowell some of the best songs (lyrically) of that style i can think of but yes dicky betts musically, as duane was too, were clearly of an exreme level.

I enjoy listening to Charlie's perspective. I was struggling with something years ago. He was getting out of an Uber and I asked him how he would handle a situation. He looked at me as if he was looking into my soul. He said pace yourself and added a personal story of him growing up. He has been my favorite Doctor since then. The man has saved alot of souls. His stories are always so humble and interesting.thank you for these. Peace Out & Much Love

I got to the venue early for Dickey’s first solo tour, Highway Call. Ozark Mtn Daredevils opened. I met their crew and they offered me a pass for some help loading in. I was 19, did not really drink. Before the show I was walking through the backstage and come around the corner to Dickey. He’s sitting in a table, feet in a chair, small amp, warming up with his eyes closed, no one else in room. I sat quietly and listened, then he opens his eyes and smiled said hello. I introduced myself and we visited a minute. I had a beer and didn’t realize I was tipsy but lost my balance while carrying his guitar in the case. In front of EVERYONE I stumbled, lost my balance and dropped the guitar. EVERYONE stopped and looked at me. Dickey immediately said “ hey all Jeff’s been working hard tonight let’s give him a chair and a break “ with a huge warm smile my way.. he was said to have been a rough character but could not have been kinder to this kid.. Thank You Dickey.. you are missed
