"These wood chipper machines are truly a testament to the power and sophistication of modern technology! They shred huge tree trunks into shreds in the blink of an eye, with incredible speed and precision. But seeing the blades spinning at such high speeds, I can't help but shudder at the potential danger. This is definitely not just pure power, but also the pinnacle of machine engineering.

As much as I love watching these beasts... can someone explain to me why all this timber gets chipped? I know some, if not all is used somehow to heat houses, but why is it not also used for lumber to MAKE houses etc...? I see so many videos, including this one, with what appears to be perfectly good, very long, wide, and even straight pine and other good woods, that would be perfect for timber... so why??

It's more likely steam. When the Chips get stored outdoors and moist, there is a fermentation process, warming them up so the water evaporates as steam. Typically the Temperature reaches up to somewhere around 70°C, but far from burning. But it can heat up enough to start burning/glowing under certain cicumstances. Especially if you pile it very high ~8m and above and/or compact it while piling like driving with a loader on it. (I've found out the hard way). In that case I'm pretty sure it's just steam
@watchthe1369 Жыл бұрын
Maybe not yet but it is at least composting/ fermenting.

@patrickd9551 Жыл бұрын
ship it across the globe by diesel powered ships and burn it for "green and co2 neutral energy". If you're lucky they burn it green, otherwise they would spend additional energy to dry the chips before burning it. And if you think I'm mad, nope, real truth here. Here in NL we import woodchips from canada to burn as biomass, which is EU approved green and CO2 neutral.

@@patrickd9551 There's also places that'll turn them into pellets for wood pellet stoves to heat their homes. It's important to note that, with very few exceptions, if you want to heat or power something, you're going to be burning something, and some sources are better than others. Geothermal, hydroelectric, and nuclear are about the only truly green and energy meaningful sources we have; wind and solar are very niche, not very efficient in most places, and have a lot of up-front energy costs in their production that sometimes aren't paid off during their lifetimes, making them carbon negative rather than truly 'green'.
@patrickd9551 Жыл бұрын
@@LabTech41 Ah yes, pellets. Using massive amounts of energy to turn woodchips into a slightly denser wood burning product. Wood as a heat source is about as perfect as it comes in. Wood. Just logs, burning slowly in a fireplace. No need to convert it into electricity, we've got other means for that. All in all there is no perfect solution and I do recognize that. Although industrialization has brought more welfare to our world and allows us to live longer in the first place. Wood chips aren't that bad either when it was it's original form: waste from sawmills. Now we just straight up shred entire trees, which I think is wasteful.
