You're right of course, and clearly both answers were correct. But apart from the inherent confusion of the UK being a country of countries, the word country is itself rather vague and limited. It would be clearer, and more correct, to refer to the United Kingdom as a (sovereign) state made up of different countries/nations/regions. But of course North Americans are not accustomed to this use of the word 'state'.

Its far more ambiguous than this. Hence why you cant find any real agreement on the issue. UK is a nation represented at the UN and every other intonational body. British is a nationality and so is Scottish (you are allowed to identify as one or the other or both in the national census). there is British citizenship but no Scottish citizenship. UK is a single kingdom. The uk is regarded as a country. Scotland is regarded as a country . The uk is made up for 4 separate countries which where once separate kingdoms but are no longer. The term nation and country are used interchangeably to describe both Scotland and the UK. The most important criteria of a country is that other countries recognize you as a country, which is the case with the UK as a whole, by the rest of the world. If lets say spain, tomorrow says that all these entities(england, nothren ireland, wales, scotland and lol cornwall) within the UK are countries, then spain would basicly be saying all these entities are indepedent of eachother, hence supporting independence movements and saying they are not part of the UK, which is either a declaration of war on spains side, or atleast saying the UK should not be allowed to represent all these area's according to spain. Also another criteria, is that a part of your land cannot just say goodbye and do their own stuff. Like the european union is not a country, but at most a confederation, which is not a country, cause their members can leave, when they wanr. Scotland cannot not leave the union one sided, hence making the UK a country, and in fact, in a legal sense, making scotland not a country under international law. From a legal international law perspective, the only right answer is the UK, and saying Scotland is actually the wrong answer.

The situation is somewhat ambiguous as before the acts of union passed in 1707 both Scoland and England where kingdoms ( not countries), with Wales being a lesser kingdom of england. The acts disolved them into one kingdom known as Great Britain. (This was before Ireland joined and we became the UK. I'm not even sure the term country was used at the time and by all means I guess both England and Scotland should have stopped being referred to as countries but I don't think anyone liked the idea. If it was a political question, then sure, the context of that becomes relevant. But it wasn't. Historically and geographically, England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are seperate countries. With their own prime ministers and their own borders. It's like if Europe had a king, you'd have to consider Europe to be one country politically, because of the technicality of a monarchy. But clearly Italy and Sweden are not the same country. To classify the UK as one country only makes sense when talking about government legislation. Not what country is Edinburgh in.

The questions weren't hard, she's just lucky this episode didn't have many hard social studies questions. And she asked Miz for the 1th and 12th grade questions which she answered in like 1 sec so it's pretty she knows. Some of chat showing their intelligence by saying Scotland is not a country. The UK is a unitary sovereign country so it is made up of countries. So UK can be considered as correct, but the proper answer is Scotland.
