Ototoxicity

The drugs which are toxic to inner ear are called ototoxic drugs. The inner ear consists of cochlea and vestibule. The drugs damaging cochlea can produce deafness. The drugs damaging vestibule can cause balance problem. Drugs like aminoglycoside antibiotics, loop diuretics etc produce ototoxicity.

If the cause is not known: It is generally accepted that steroids (cortisone), taken orally over 1 to 2 weeks, are the single most beneficial treatment for sudden hearing loss, although they do not lead to improvement in every case. Sometimes a booster dose of steroids is injected directly into the ear.
