how hoyoverse writes the women in genshin (it's actually GOOD now?)

long overdue UPDATED VIDEO of my "state of female characters in genshin" vid. please don't take a shot every time i say "character arc" :) i really like the direction that hoyo is taking when it comes to the female characters in genshin and while i can't wait to see what they have in store for us, i also think there are still some things that need improvement.

I felt like as a Lumine player, the Ayaka quest was a lot more fitting, cause it was more like she had no girl - friends. She is clearly friends with Thoma so when it's Aether... it's just really odd, but with Lumine the idea I got is no other girls wanted to hang out with her because of her status, and I think that worked a lot better for me.

Another popular theory is Dainsleif, but I don't think it holds enough water. It's probable we don't get a direct answer until Natlan though.

The Fontaine cast (as well as the overall Archon quest chain) definitely saved the show. We've seen quite some improvement since Act II and V of Sumeru- they've really begun effectively incorporating a region's characters into the story. A major part of why many of us feel closer to characters like Navia and Furina is as you said: they feel like they've existed as proper people with proper lives prior to our arrival. It certainly made helping them overcome their struggles and achieving their goals all the more impactful 💜

I know you focus primarily on the 5 stars but one of the female characters that is misused so much is Kujou Sara imo. Hoyo keeps reducing her to a Shogun fan when (in my personal opinion) post-archon quest that mentality shouldn't make sense for Sara after everything that went down in Act 3. Like you pointed out with Ganyu, there's a lot that could be explored about Sara. She was adopted by the Kujou Clan but will never be as "wanted" as the legitimate blood-related children are, how she has to work extra hard to earn her place + being the General of the Tenryou commission army, and also she's a tengu & one of the few yokai playable characters we have but that rarely feels like it's brought up?? (honestly the yokai aspect only feels the most relevant with Miko and Itto). I keep hoping for an Inazuma event that has all the prominent yokai playable characters on the center stage, so Itto, Sara, Miko, Kirara (I don't know if Gorou counts??), and explore that side of Inazuma's worldbuilding.

It's feels like they really abandoned so many of inazuma characters and usually we only get them when they visit one of the other regions itto and kuki mostly all of solider/military characters I feel got hit the most by this , kokomi really was just shoved in to that last summer event, she was hardly involved nor did she contribute much I admit they do give yoyoima quite a lot of screen time as well as just so many banners like they literally have ran her twice maybe even 3 times while some charactera didnt even get 1

I do agree however that we should see more of them. A lot of them died during the cataclysm, how did this affect their society? Do they care about humanity like the melusine? or would they rather live in seclusion like most of the adapatus? How would the Yokai who have integrated into society interact with the others? There’s so much to work with here.

Off topic but sumeru and Fontaine side quests, world quests , artifacts and weapons have such amazing lore (king deshret, gurabad's fall, dottore, alian guillotine) and most of them are not child friendly. Like the writers are capable of amazing storylines. (I was so surprised in jeht's quest when the pari (the jinn that follows us around openly said things about cannabilising her own children, jeht executing a trailer. ) Like jeht and alaine's sister have better storylines than soke characters.

I think the reason you forget about Yanfei is because Hoyo does too... She's a half-adeptus (though a young one), so should be relevant in some of the adeptus stories (even if it's comically not realizing that some characters are adepti, like she doesn't realize Zhongli is Rex Lapis)...and then she's a legal expert. She should be in Fontaine, the nation of justice, at least once. They threw her a bone in the Beetle Battle event, but that's establishing her to being a side character in Itto's and Shinobu's stories...

In a game where characters have enough power to terraform the land, shake the heavens and alter matter on an atomic level, it's always the human characters displaying their human virtues that leave me speechless and tearing up. Case in point: Nilou's incredible courage during Alhaitham's plan and facing the akademiya sages, Yoimiya's overwhelming emotional intelligence in her every action, Xianyun comforting the traveller after the dream even though she herself recognizes comforting others is not her strong suit and generally strong motherly instincts, among others.

Honestly after sumeru it started feeling like we’re less of the mc and the actual charecters are the mc nahida had a charecter arc in sumeru she found self acceptance she felt like where the story was leading too she filled a role a archon would do and we were just on the sidelines Navia felt like the mc of the first part of Fontaine the second part was honestly neuvilette But both actually had a charecter arc and it still went on into their story quest though I do hope we step back into the spotlight because the traveler is so frickin morally grey and it makes paimon more and more unbearable(still love her)

not entirelly on topic, but I really liked, how HoYo managed The Chasm interlude quest and how they merged story quest with event. I think, every event quest should be an interlude one. By that newer players can play them and know things like Albedo's lore and story abt Raiden Gokaden. And people who went through this stories with events have a chanse to reread this stories and be nostalgic abt their old adventures. I would do anything to go thhrough Golden Apple quests once more. But I don't even have a proof that this stories happend besides Dodoko Tales...

Chalk Prince, Shadows Amidst Snowstorms and Ureconciled Stars are probably the ones the Hoyo really regret making exclusive. Even if the intention was to retain old players through FOMO, it unintentionally punished new players or turn them off or at the very least, knda killed Albedos appeal to new players, since most of them have no clue why he's so hyped and why he's such a big deal unless they check the internet. Scaramouche at least has the benefit of being one of the central characters in ver 3.0.

Talking about Ayaka, I believe that when she ment that lacked friends, it meant that she didn't have friends her age I mean, come on, no matter how you look at it, Ayaka is not even a woman, she's a girl, probably in her teens still. unpopular opinion but i think these NPC focused story quests arent bad. It makes the playable character actually feel like they're a part of the world, not just a character to sell. If all story quests are self-contained, it makes the character so much less real and connected to the world of teyvat. We don't have to necessarily only learn abt the char through themselves. Their personalities/backstories can be highlighted against an NPC.

One small correction about Ei; she was actually in the Plane of Euthymia for 400 years, not 500. Scara's lore says (or at least implies) that she only finished the Shogun puppet about 100 years after the Calamity. So she fought the Shogun for an additional 100 years on top of it. Guess it's taxes.

You said it yourself, some characters are well built and trusting of the traveller coz they went through the archon quest plot line. So some characters naturally don't have that level of trust, for example Hu Tao doesn't have a reason to tell us a total stranger about her story, she's just doing a job as a guide between life and death while we just tag along. Same with someone like Yelan, we met her while she was doing her job, and it's still a part of her.

I see the early story quests as doing a quest WITH the character while the later ones are doing a story quest ABOUT the character and that makes all the difference. So the characters who shine early in the game are usually the ones who have more screen time during main quests. Whatever the case, they did Kokomi dirty.

I recently replayed archon quests up to end of Liyue and to my surprise I found them more entertaining than what I expected from how I remembered them. I guess constant criticism I heard of them over time just shifted me to thinking they were worse than they actually were. It still makes me sad that I’ll never be able to fully appreciate some characters because I haven’t been playing the game since it came out.I’ll never be able to see the reveal of Scaramouche or Susbedo. I’ll never be able to see the golden apple archipelago for the first time and watch Diluc melt all of keaya’s ice bridges. I really think genshin should save events and keep them somewhere in game for new players.

She has potential, as a character and as a physical carry, but man, Hoyo maybe has a huge bias against her, gluing her constantly either with Amber or Collei and giving her crappy support, while evry other carry, Like Xiao or Itto getting their great supports (Xiao with Faruzan and Xianyun, and Itto with Gorou and maybe in fuutre - Chiori), Eula gets barely working garbage like Mika.

Gameplay wise, Eula really just got the Venti treatment. In that her kit was so overpowered when conceived they cannont ever buff her to relevence since that would truely break the game. She is the first character to break the 1m damage number when everyone else was at most doing 10k, if she were any more powerful then there would either have to be physical immunes (much like how they nerfed venti by having most things resistant to being pulled) or have so much hp other characters suffer.

Though I may not have seen the video yet, but I can say that Hoyoverse has improved the writing for female characters now, I do agree that they were not as good back then, But with more character development over the years and once we hit Sumeru and Fontaine, the writing was well written to characters such as Nahida, Furina and Navia, and maybe Nilou (nah she is kinda bland...), and probably Dehya, I like how they had their patience to make them relevant.

It just feels like, after all her appearances in the Archon Quest, her story quest, and events, the only thing I know about her is that she is nice, and she likes to dance. That's it. Why does she like to dance? Did someone influence her to start? Does she have any other hobbies? Who are her friends? Don't know, all we know is that she likes to dance. I really enjoyed the Roses and Muskets event as it gave more explanation and development for Ayaka. Ive mained her since her release but ill be honest she's not even in my top ten. I just never made that emotional connection, probably cause her story quest just didnt feel right being in the middle of a war. But her interactions with yoimiya in the 4.3 event really elevated her writing. I can actually tell that yoimiya is her first real female friend and I could see her have the confidence to finally trying new things such as acting, things she always yearned to experience. It makes sense since its yoimiya, someone with the exact opposite personality to her. Yoimiya offers ayaka the chance to break out of her box and be more confident. Their dynamic is really sweet. I honestly think something like that should be the focus of her second story quest and not just in small scenes behind a time-limited event.

Genshin’s writing is generally pretty good, despite popular misconceptions (for example, Paimon doesn’t repeat everything nearly as much as people say, and this can be objectively proven, as we have dialogue logs), but it has been nice to see it get better and better, especially with regard to more of its characters like this. It was sort of hit and miss before 2.6, but they seem to have been on an upward trend since then.

About the "NPC Quest" I have a guess as to why Hoyo decided to always use npc as plot device, with the concept of Vision Bearer are people that recognized by Gods and able to ascend to Celestia, and they are expected to be some kind of lead/guide of humanity, and for our Playable Characters bar Furina, they already have Vision when we know them, so the idea is really to show their qualities as that 'guide' by helping the introduced NPC on the Story Quest, and this is why I think it's unlikely that they move entirely from this formula. In the end, execution is what matters, yes we have a lot of Story Quest centered around a random NPC, but we also have good one using same npc formula like your example Yoimiya's 2nd, and just recently Xianyun/CR's Story Quest. So my point is I don't think this 'npc as plot device' formula going anywhere but by recent development I do believe they can execute this way better as Sumeru and Fontaine writing just has been overall an improvement. Also about female centered event and option to play past event story heck yeah we despereately need those.

I agree with a lot of this, but one thing I'll say is that I think Nilou's story quest did develop her in one very interesting way, which is that in addition to being kind and a good dancer, she's also highly intelligent. She keeps up well with an Akademiya scholar in the debate with only a few days of preparation, identifies that he still cares about his daughter, and then backs him into a trap where he would have to disown his daughter in order to get the outcome he was seeking. I thought it was pretty interesting that a character shown as an artist and empath is also shown to be a capable logician as well if she needs to be.

IMO, the biggest problem with playable characters is the fact that some NPCs are better written than them. At least with Fontaine, they're slowly showing that they don't mind making the playable characters go through with a lot of stuff. But the problem is still they tell us, but don't show it. This is why Navia and Furina are both amazingly written for me. We actually get to see what they went through, we didn't just hear it. Also, their backstory isn't just sad because they lost someone important. Just think about how many "sad backstories" of characters do we have where the main sad thing about them is they lost someone; Ei, Zhongli, Venti, Kazuha, Scara, Xiao, Diluc, Shenhe, etc. It's been overused to the point that it doesn't feel that sad anymore.

To the point that their story hardly matters anymore. It doesn't really debunk my claim. For example, Ruu (the kid from the Tsurumi island quest) have a much better story than Kokomi, even though they're in a rather similar situation. Ruu's whole quest actually allowed us to learn more about the god he followed, the Thunderbird. Including his relationship and connection to his god. And the way that story was told is actually emotionally involving. Meanwhile, even though Kokomi is the Divine Priestess of the Watatsumi Island that worshipped Orobashi, she hardly had anything noteworthy to say about her god. Even during the Enkanomiya quest, she was entirely absent despite the fact that she, above everyone else, should have the most involvement in investigating Enkanomiya. Also, so far, every story Kokomi is in isn't as emotionally involving as the aforementioned Ruu world quest.

I feel Hoyo did Ei character's so badly, everyone seems to forget that Ei was never meant to rule over Inazuma. Yes, Ei and Makoto did play the role of Archon together but the people of Inazuma always assumed it was Makoto and not Ei, Ei was always the warrior general whilst Makoto was the compassionate, understanding, and intelligent ruler. The genshin community either loves Ei or hates her but everyone seems to forget that she probably is one of the most traumatized characters, she's had to fight for all these centuries and all she's experienced was constant loss, she didn't just lose her sister, with every battle that was fought, she kept losing those she loved until she was alone, the community doesn't understand that Ei probably feels like she was never meant to rule Inazuma alone, that she was never meant to be Archon without Makoto. Not to mention it must've been so hard on Ei mentally and emotionally to pretend that she was the sole archon this entire time and to just take Makoto's place so no one would know that she was dead, I wish Hoyo would talk about these things like they did with Nahida and Furina's trauma. It would've been WAYYYY better if Hoyo branched off these aspects of Ei's character rather than rushing the archon quest and boom! All the problems are dealt with just because the traveler beat her in battle and Yae called her out for exiling herself. I relate to Ei because I too lost my sister and my father, the idea of preserving eternity really hits hard when you've lost those whom you love, it's a shame that they'll probably never revisit Ei's story but one can only hope!

I think the key to understanding why male charachters get more focus lies outside of the realm of writing. It's my understanding that genshin is the first Hoyo game to feature playable male charachters (a comparatively uncommon thing in gacha games, even more so in 2020), and they must have wanted to make sure that these charachters are welcomed their audience that might not be too interested at the prospect of "staring at a mans ass" during gameplay. And if focus is on one thing, it has been taken away from another. So, to put it short, I believe it was never a skill issue. It has always, at hearth, been about business. And honestly, if the price for playable male charachters is a couple of female charachters with sub-bar writing, I'm willing to take that trade. Genshin would be a very different game had they gone Honkai impact and made only female charachters playable.

It's unfair to say your previous video aged badly. The old writing still hasn't changed and all of the points you made there are still valid. New material is different for sure. Afaik, the leaks said that Genshin writing team was effectively fired and a new team took over after Inazuma. Considering the change and improvement in writing and characters it does sound to be true. With the current writing team I'm exited to see what happens in the future. First teams writing was a bit... questionable at best. So much "slice of life" and they forgot they had a main plot for a year during the early run. Woops. Paimon's writing was also exceptionally bad back then. It's not particularly nice when they made paimon pander and pretend like you're a block of wood that can't get even the most obvious plot point and forced her to repeat everything again and again and again. Which is made even worse by the unskippable cutscenes forcing you to spam click through the 100th pointless slice of life cutscene in a row. Some nitpicks I would say is that Inazuma's rushing didn't do it nearly as much damage as the writing itself. The whole time we run on the premises that Raiden doesn't know what's actually happening and is being led astray by bad reports. When we get to actually face her she immediately tells us that she knows what's happening and it's all by her design?. I don't even know where to start. She's just unironically a horrible, garbage person who intentionally created a civil war and caused mass death & destruction. No amount of Story quests can salvage this trash fire at this point. To make it worse, she's portrayed as an absolute idiot by this action. She wants eternity, endless status quo with no change. Yet here we have her intentionally letting Fatui's plunge her country into a civil war.. which is the absolutely opposite of No change. I don't think they intended for her to be a stupid waifu. For Eula, her sad backstory doesn't really have an impact for me as if my memory serves me correctly, she told us that she acts like an A-hole because people expect her to be one. You can't exactly blame people for disliking you if you act the way they think you are. It would've been more impactful and sad if she didn't just straight up admit to be a douche.

I think you slightly misread Ei's explanation of 'no change', she doesn't want Inazuma to develop to the point Khaenri'ah did where the Heavenly Principles deemed them a danger and nuked them out of existence (which we during the Sumeru exploration find out is not *entirely* what happened, but that's not the point here) along with *ALL* of Ei's friends and family except for Yae as collateral damage of which Ei had to kill roughly half of them herself. It's not that she doesn't want Inazuma to be safe, it's just that everything except actual technological and divine advancement is preferred. And regarding Eula, again you slightly misread or misremembered the details. Eula acts like that after having TRIED FOR YEARS to be accepted by the common folk, which they didn't at all whatsoever. At which point she decided it's no use and 'become the villain the people expect her to be' because it'll hurt her less than being constantly rejected while trying to prove she's good (which obviously isn't true but that is ALSO something she's starting to address by her interactions with Collei).

I think Eula is still somewhat poorly written. It really annoyed me in her quest how she had the Traveler practice to talk to her uncle by insulting people like they're plebians. I get it that they were trying to get the Traveler to get into the mindset of a noble. But it would have made a lot more sense to have the Traveler speak to everyone really politely like they're her uncle instead. That's who you're practicing to talk to. That way it would seem more unjustified how people treat her. like although being judged for her family's history is unfair she still seems to me to bring a lot of misery upon herself by talking like this, and threatening to fight people. I also think that the female characters often have less voice differences than the male characters. A lot of them are high pitched and child like and it all kind of blends together for me. I also wish that Collei was still affected but eleazar and had some kind of chronic illness.

Ei: in my head-canon, city visit happened 1-2mo after the previous quest, based on how others treated her, and didn't run in fear. Ayaka: everyone was already treating traveler as a hero and story was reining you in that direction, so I just considering her being extra nice JUST LIKE ALL THE OTHERS OF THE RESISTANCE. Kokomi: same as Ayaka. As a strategist, also tries to maintain good relationships with our lil' hero. + if you look at other NPCs throughout whole inazuma questline, she is a genius (in comparison). Ganyu: well they did make it cannon that she's overworked and sleep deprived workaholic, and doesn't participate a lot in monster extermination; and also Xiao trained her just a few years back which is very short time for an adepti, so I am not bewildered about her not doing adeptui stuff. Also, I am pretty sure Kequing also has a Rex Lapis figurine and that she's a secret fan of Rex in particular, so even if argument was about management, I am pretty sure it won't last long as Rex, even past decade or two, let humans do a lot of management themselves. Yelan: she is meant to stay secretive thug, vigilante, Milileth secret services or whatever. Yae: yes, her whole shtick is a self-indulgent mischievous youkai filling in her boredom. Eula: her story was about her gaining courage to stand up against injustice, and yes, for story to show the goodnes of her heart as you said.

In the beginning (especially Mondstadt) there were a lot of instances where a character believed that not working 24/7, setting boundaries or being able to say “no” was being mean or a failure (whether referring to themselves or someone else) and instead of being treated like the flaw it was, it was treated more like some cute quirk and even the negative consequences didn’t result in a forward development or solution. There were exceptions but the fandom didn’t receive most of them well. Which is a shame because the writing often singled out “lazy” and “cold” characters who were unintentionally written to either be disabled or neurodivergent-coded and the fandom echoed those sentiments (as a player with ADHD and autism it’s hard to see that kind of thing and realize you can’t even escape the way you were bullied in everyday life in a video game. Especially one from your own home country). Now I’m seeing more positive portrayals of characters, especially women who assert their boundaries (Chiori, Navia, Dehya, Yelan, Shinobu, etc) and those who are allowed to be vulnerable and not treated as lazy especially as a disabled woman myself (Collei, Furina, Kokomi, Yelan again, etc) and I’m liking it so much more.

A fun vid, tho I do feel Genshin often has a larger problem with its quests being too wordy, especially with how inconsequential dialog can be presented right next to game changing statements and no distinction made between the two. That being said, one of my favourite character quests remains Mona's. It had a nice day-in-the-life, roadtrip feeling, with the dialog feeling comedic and playful. The quest also felt more focused and better directed than Genshins Prologue and was where I learned to stop skipping dialogue and embrace the games story. 😊

Dehya is such a chill character to be around. She was actually so perceptive and helpful during the Samsara part of the Archon Quest and made Paimon actually shut it. Her story quest is actually about HER and we got a rollercoaster of a story only to find out she's (SPOILER) adopted xD I also love her relationship with Dunyarzad, another memorable character despite being an NPC. Overall one of my fave female faves alongside Shenhe, Navia, Nahida, Furina, Mona, and Fischl (latter two because of the 2nd GAA) I'd also like to talk about Nahida, who is genuine about helping us and her people but at the same time is naive and inexperienced as a young god and even messes up against Dottore at one point. For a god of wisdom, she's a perfectly flawed character. Unlike Furina, we got to spend time knowing more about Nahida throughout the whole Archon quest which I appreciate over getting a big plot twist reveal at the end.

I'm weird and have enjoyed almost all the limited time events but still lag behind on some of the major content, but i think we noticed same things. If you had to ask me we had some good writing before but 2.7 or 2.8 was about the time i finally had some confidence it wasn't one off or accidental. Irodori was where i first noticed some actual difference and hoped it wasn't a accident, then Chasm and Summertime Phantasia back to back proved they were putting real effort into it. Fontaine is the best nation by far, Furina and Navia are the best characters by far. (My opinion.)

I completely Agree regarding Collei! To me, she sticks out as a human character stuck among an ensemble of tropes. By a wide margin my absolute favourite character!

She’s one of the very few characters that cares about the Traveler as a person from what I can tell.

I was pretty happy when we got to the Sumeru and Fontaine arcs that Hoyo FINALLY figured out how to write an arc and especially how to write female characters. Deyha, despite some people complaining about her gameplay, has one of the best character quests in the game, some other female characters now have better developments with some new friendships being made(Really love that Calllei and Sucrose became friends) and Fontaine with Navia and Furina, their character development was beautiful. While yes Furina's story quest afterwards was a bit on the dumb side, at least she grew as a character and so far it is going great. Here's hoping Hoyo can keep up the pace and great analysis!

Somehow all of these character focused events keep happening when I'm taking breaks from the game, and this video really highlights how much I've missed. Now I'm really annoyed that there's no way to play them. Why is there so much character development in limited time events?!

I noticed that almost all of the story quests have a heavy focus on the NPC. Sometimes, it works, and other times, it clashes way too much. I personally find it annoying when there's too much focus on the NPC and the 5-star is just "there". Xiao is my favorite character, and I barely find his story quest to be interesting. I didn't even remember seeing him in it, it's that bad💀

Genshin has a tendency to have characters just kind of be “there” with really superfluous reasons as to why they are (Mona showing up in Fontaine, Diluc, Kaeya, Razor and Albedo shaking up in the first Archipelago visit).

Hoyoverse has always been great at writing female characters, in fact Honkai 3rd has some of the best characters in all of fiction. I think people new to Hoyoverse came into Genshin thinking that this is just another gacha and viewed the game with extreme bias especially when this is a Chinese game. Hoyoverse puts a lots of focus on storytelling and plays the long game for character development, they take their time to build the world and you can only see the pay off years down the road. And Genshin has proven itself to have incredible world building and lore that only becomes richer the more it expands.
