Yeah Otto's connection to Kallen goes far beyond love. She was a beacon of hope in his life so strong he truly believed she could give the hope he felt to the entire world. She was the savior of his world, and the entire world in his eyes. A shining light so bright, he worked in the darkness to make her shine even more. And then he lost her, the meaning of his life, and was ready to sacrifice absolutely everything to correct that mistake. To him, trading every life was worth her one life.

early for once! but yeah otto is one of the few villains that actually "won" on their own terms, and we can sympathize and understand him, but never forgive him. top tier villain. he's made to be extremely easy to hate but by the end of chap 28, you gotta have some respect for his persistence and if you feel conflicted by feeling something positive towards him, it means the writers did their job perfectly.

I think there's no point in trying to comprehend Ottos's quest for reviving Kallen and his actions, there's just too much elements mixed in his motivations you can never give a proper answer to the question. There's his admiration for the Holy Maiden, the savior and defender of the weak, there's his guilty for all the things he did that hurt Kallen and ultimately helped in her dead, there's his hate towards humanity for extingish the life of the most pure and kind person. The child in him, wanting to see again the only person who showed genuine interest and kindness to him, and the adult him, trying to make up for all his wrongdoings with even more wrong deals... He may had have romantic feelings for Kallen when they both were alive, but these feelings vanished when her died and he started a quest with the sole purpuse to prove the world everything and everyone was wrong and Kallen's dead should have never happened-

People till this day think that Otto's actions were all because he simp Kallen hard, but let's put it this way: No one believed him, no one cared for his creations, no on acknowledge his existence, all except Kallen. He didn't just see Kallen as a lover, but as someone who in a sense, saved him. If not for Kallen, he won't be able to persevere on to fight against the Honkai. Additionally, he indirectly killed Kallen, and he was mad at himself for not able to protect her when she has saved him multiple times. His devotion to give another life for Kallen was not just out of love, but also for Kallen to live and experience the fair and just side of life. Kallen died too young, and Otto wanted to give her a second chance to live again. There's way too many things to interpret to explain all the good and evil he did, but for Otto, he achieved his goal in the end.

"Regression" still even today, hits me so hard... I cried watching this reaction.... Otto, I may not forgive his actions, but I feel empathy for his grief and loss as well as self-blame for Kallen's death. I know all too well the pain of losing someone precious to you, and blaming yourself for her demise... Still not over the death of my cat who was my daughter to me. Not as a pet to me. I blame myself for her physical suffering making her to need to be put down. Even though I never intended to hurt her. She may have not been human, unlike Kallen, but the everlasting pain of grief and self-blame for indirectly being the reason she had to die, is all too real... and I know that pain all too well... I just hope, the afterlife exists, and she is in a happy place... I wish I could bring her back from the dead, but alas, once one perishes, they can never return...

It was never so much about love with Kallen for Otto. Rather it was recognition. She was the person who approved of him, who recognized his inner needs and wants and encouraged them, to work together to change this world that rejects him and mercilessly hurts people. To Otto, the intersections between morality, love, and fighting the Honkai were merely accidental-what really mattered was someone looking at him as him. Therefore, the summary of his feelings for Kallen can be put down as faith. "But her loyal believer will never give in." When she died, his self-worth went along and he lived as a corpse, his obsession accumulating year by year.

Shes so right when she said that Otto does not love Kallen in a romantic way. We all know that Otto sees her as the one true hero, the savior of the world. That her path being cut off due to his family, and his own actions too, that he swore that he will do ANYTHING to bring her back. His methods, though diabolical at times, actually saved the world. Without Kiana and Bianka, their world was doomed to perish just like in GGZ.

I mean, we absolutely don't know how things would have played out without Otto's experiments. Just from the ancillary work, Himeko's dad researched plans for an interstellar craft from the previous era that Welt could have created an escape from Honkai with and joined the wider galactic community, which could have helped out. We don't know how Schicksal would have evolved without Otto, and whether they would have found better ways of dealing with Honkai. The MOST likely scenario would be Kevin would have enacted Project Stigma in some form and most of humanity would die in Honkai radiation or be stigmatized into memories. But we just won't know how it would have gone down.

​@@225Reaver Without Otto, Schicksal would still be a heavily corrupted organisation, since the first thing he did after kallen's death was to support a peasant uprising to clear out the corruption like kallen wanted but still felt empty. Without the combined authority of what was essentially the New World Order that is Schicksal in Otto's control, i dont think they would have survived the 1st or 2nd herrscher. (Idk if Welt Joyce would be good, since AE was technically a schicksal branch, so rhey wont exist too)

@@aethelon4144 There's a lot of assumptions there. For example, without Otto, the plagues would have hit much worse, but eventually have resolved naturally. Schicksal likely might have collapsed under its own weight and corruption - and from the ashes, we wouldn't know what else would happen. Fu Hua may or may not have fought Kallen, and the timeline with her might have played out differently. After that, we don't know what other anti-honaki organisations may have been created - World Serpent may have started operating openly without Schicksal there, and potentially integrated what would have become the AE members, especially since they were researching Previous era stuff to begin with. It was Tesla's idea to incorporated all of the Herrscher cores into one, though whether or not she would have got that idea or not would be unknown. Welt Joyce likely wouldn't have been aggressive similar to the 1st Honkai eruption, and that means no attmepted nuking of New York and Edison's honkai- neutralising experiments wouldn't have been tampered with and would have supercharged the fight against Honkai. In particular, with Edison's Moonlight Throne tech combined with Welt Joyce coming into his full power of Truth instead of getting taken out by Otto, he'd probably be able to have soloed Herrsher of the Void (who nearly got taken out by one Selene blast), and started gathering cores there. Otto destroyed many lives, and many geniuses and those who fought to help humanity. There would definitely have been paths to saving humanity, paths that Otto cut short personally.

Otto doesn't deserve any sympathy and I know that he will agree on that but at least he showed why he decided to do that and left the players to judge him.

I don't hate people who forgives him, but it's a little bit too much for immediately forgiving him after this Chapter when you look back to all the things he has done and even praising him. He doesn't need forgiveness, Otto himself knows that. He only wants one thing, and it's the most selfish thing he ever did throughout his life. Otto's feelings towards Kallen transcended love and even adoration. To Otto, Kallen was equal to a deity who's worth outweighed existence itself, a faith so pure it transcended reason. It didn't matter who or what he had to trade for her or if he had to stand against god itself in order to achieve his goal. The ideal of "Otto" is peaceful and loving, but "Otto" had died 500 years prior alongside Kallen. What remained was a hollow shell who's sole purpose was absolute servitude to the ideal of Kallen he had crafted inside his head. The only time remnants of "Otto" resurfaced was when it came to Theresa. Otto is heavily flawed in the sense that the Ideal Kallen in his head was nothing but an illusion. He had betrayed her love conducting human experiments, betrayed her trust when he she was held captive and betrayed her wishes throughout his 500 year journey while killing dozens of millions of innocent lives in the process of reviving her. He betrayed and risked the lives of every single one of his pawns, including Theresa in order to achieve his delusion. But his struggle is just relatable, as all humans relate to the feeling of desperation and powerlessness, making mistake after mistake trying to desperately "recover" from a bad situation, and being unable to stop once you're in too deep. At the eve of his final chapter it becomes apparent that he is not the man in control that we were shown throughout the story, but just this empty shell driven entirely by faith, his whole façade collapses and the only thing remains is the sickly boy. But he neither deserves nor demands sympathy.

Otto's last conversation with VA (in that cloud area) says it all. He admits that he and Kallen would not make a good couple due to their personalities and circumstances. I always feel bad whenever people just meme him as a simp, when their relationship was far from romantic. To put it simply, Otto is a devote believer of a Saintess. He believes that humanity's own foolishness (which include his naive self of believing in her sister's suggestion of unleashing the honkai beast on execution day) robbed humanity of a saintess who could have done so much more good if she were to live. And he's here to make sure that she will live, no matter the cost. Funny enough, because deep down he always believed in Kallen's teachings and philosophies, he final plan not only fulfilled his own wish, but also as a byproduct produced the main character group that would eventually lead humanity to victory against honkai. Mind you this will not excuse him of the billions that he killed in the past, we as players will still wish him to rot in hell. But you cannot deny that this man really thought it all out from the beginning to the end.

Otto was never a villain tbh. If anything he's more of an anti-hero. He didn't always go about it in the right way, but always managed to nudge humanity in the right direction. In a lot of ways, Otto is similar to Lelouch from Code Geass. He put everything in place, but knew the world would never be able to unite behind him because of the things he had done (plus he kind of needed to die to give Kallen another chance, so he couldn't finish the fight against the Honkai anyway). He also intentionally made the main cast (and the players) hate him to the point that the only characters that wanted to figure out what he was actually trying to do in Kolosten were Durandal and Theresa (the two that knew he wasn't evil from personal experience).

There's another example of someone who was willing to give up everything for their loved one in this story - Raiden Mei, who wished to throw her life and morals away with World Serpent to save Kiana. But she decided in the end that doing that wasn't what Kiana would have wanted. She was perfectly willing to give her life for Kiana as well - yet she decided that the best thing to do was to give her life into protecting Kiana AND her dreams. Otto didn't realise that in time. Or rather, he wasn't strong enough to achieve both things for Kallen. But I'd rather have someone like Mei than Otto for myself.

Also, I think you maybe missed the point on Otto... Otto's crimes _are_ his atonement. The guilt and self-loathing are his punishment He hid his real personality and _pretended_ to be a villain, yet he ultimately made choices beneficial to Humanity. Because he wished he could've known how to revive Kallen properly from the start, instead of hurting countless people unnecessarily. Because deep down, Otto is mostly a normal guy, and no one hates the clown more than Otto Apocalypse. In some sense, hating him is actually rewarding him, signaling that his self-imposed penance of being a Professional Asshole worked.
