*1. Foundation under Osman I (1299-1326):*
The Ottoman Empire began in 1299 when Osman I, a leader of the Turkish Kayi tribe, declared independence from the weakening Seljuk Sultanate of Rum in Anatolia. Osman expanded his territory through conquest and alliances, establishing the foundation of what would become one of history's most influential empires.
2. Expansion and Early Consolidation (1326-1389):
Under Osman's son, Orhan (1326-1362), the Ottoman state expanded significantly in northwest Anatolia. Orhan captured key cities such as Bursa in 1326, making it the Ottoman capital. He also secured alliances with neighboring Turkish tribes and principalities. The Ottomans continued to expand into the Balkans, defeating Byzantine and Bulgarian forces.
3. Conquest of Gallipoli and Adrianople (1362-1389):
Under Murad I (1362-1389), the Ottoman Empire captured important strategic locations such as Gallipoli in 1354, gaining control of the Dardanelles. Murad also conquered Adrianople (modern Edirne) in 1361, establishing it as the new Ottoman capital. The Ottoman military prowess was demonstrated in victories against Serbian and Bulgarian forces at the Battles of Kosovo (1389), solidifying Ottoman dominance in the Balkans.
4. Expansion into Europe (1389-1402):
Murad's successors, Bayezid I (1389-1402), continued Ottoman expansion into Europe. Bayezid extended Ottoman rule over Serbia, Bulgaria, and parts of Greece. His conquests brought the Ottomans into direct conflict with European powers, including Hungary and the Byzantine Empire. The Ottomans established themselves as a major power in the region, challenging the existing Christian states and Byzantine remnants.
5. Battle of Ankara and Interregnum (1402):
The zenith of Bayezid's expansion was halted by defeat at the Battle of Ankara in 1402 against Timur (Tamerlane), the Central Asian conqueror. Bayezid was captured, and the Ottoman Empire fell into a brief period of fragmentation known as the Ottoman Interregnum (1402-1413), during which Bayezid's sons fought for control over the empire.
In summary, the first 100 years of the Ottoman Empire from 1299 to 1402 saw its establishment as a dominant force in Anatolia and the Balkans under Osman I and his successors. The Ottomans expanded through military conquests, securing strategic territories and establishing their capital in Bursa and later Adrianople. However, the period ended with a setback at the Battle of Ankara and the ensuing interregnum, setting the stage for future challenges and successes in the empire's history.
